Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - The chairman of the European Medicines Agency's main committee for approving new drugs resigned suddenly on Wednesday, in a move a spokesman said was related to his position at the French healthcare regulator, AFSSAPS. New batch of fake Avastin reached U.S. via Britain

The logo of Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche is seen at the company's headquarters in BaselLONDON (Reuters) - A new batch of counterfeit cancer drug Avastin discovered in the United States was bought in Turkey and shipped through Britain by UK-based middlemen, officials said on Wednesday, revealing a shipment pattern very similar to an earlier episode. The first discovery of fake supplies of the Roche drug shipped into the United States from the Middle East via Europe hit the headlines in February. The repetition of the illegal trade highlights vulnerabilities in the global medicine supply chain, which leaves patients at risk of receiving ineffective or contaminated products. ...

Sanofi unveils mixed news for Zaltrap cancer drug

Reuters - PARIS (Reuters) - Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals said their Zaltrap drug candidate failed to meet targets in a late-stage study for the treatment of prostate cancer, though U.S. authorities were reviewing it for use in treating colon cancer. Newron agrees Parkinson's drug deal with Zambon

Reuters - ZURICH (Reuters) - Italian drug maker Newron has signed a strategic collaboration and licensing deal for its Parkinson's disease drug safinamide with Italian drugs and chemicals maker Zambon which involves Zambon taking a 9.1 percent stake in Newron. Newron said in a statement Zambon would make an initial investment of 20 million euros ($26.2 million) to pay for the completion of the drug's clinical development and applications for marketing approval in Europe and the United States. ... Mississippi bill may force state's only abortion clinic to close

What they may not have known is that ammonia - often associated with cleaning products - was cleared by U.S. health officials nearly 40 years ago and is used in making many foods, including cheese. WTO dents U.S. ban on clove cigarettes

Genital warts tied to range of cancers

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who've ever had genital warts may have a somewhat higher risk of several types of cancer -- possibly including common skin cancers, a new study suggests. The findings, reported in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, confirm some well-established connections between the genital warts virus and certain cancers. And they hint that there could be additional risks. Genital warts are caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). St. Jude cites insulation snag in wires, shares fall

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The more common type of diabetes in China grew by 30 percent in just seven years, according to a new survey of thousands of Shanghai residents. The curse of affluence appears to be affecting China as it has many other developing countries. "There is a certainly a pattern that we're seeing over and over again," said Dr. Jeffrey Koplan, the vice president for global health at Emory University. Club drug "special K" tied to urinary problems

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Many people who use the club drug ketamine may risk abdominal pain, a leaky bladder and other urinary tract symptoms, a new study suggests. In medicine, ketamine is used as an anesthetic. In clubs, where it's better known as "special K," ketamine is snorted, or sometimes injected; users say the drug creates feelings of euphoria and being "out of your body." Ketamine abuse is on the rise in many countries. Repeated use has been linked to mental problems such as hallucinations and impaired memory, thinking and concentration.
