Jet Blue meltdown pilot has detention hearing waived

A JetBlue pilot is removed from the plane after erratic behavior forced the crew to land in Amarillo Texas(Reuters) - A JetBlue pilot who apparently suffered a midair mental meltdown last month and was charged with interfering with a commercial flight will not have to face a court hearing on Monday, a magistrate judge ruled on Friday. Clayton Osbon, 49, has been in custody since March 27 when he was subdued by passengers after screaming and pounding on the cockpit door during a flight from New York to Las Vegas. The co-pilot of Flight 191 was forced to make an emergency landing in Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. ...

Advocates for mentally ill erred in lawsuit: court

Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A New York nonprofit that advocates for the mentally ill cannot sue on their behalf for better housing because of how the organization is structured, a court said on Friday. The decision by a federal appeals court sweeps aside a trial judge's finding that the State of New York discriminated against thousands of people living in adult homes. The case must now begin anew, possibly with the Justice Department taking the lead, the court said. Novo Nordisk says diabetes drug Victoza superior to Merck rival

Reuters - COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Danish Novo Nordisk, the world's biggest insulin producer, said on Friday it had received a product label update for diabetes drug Victoza to include data showing superior efficacy when compared with rival drug Januvia from Merck. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would update the product label for Victoza to include data showing superior blood sugar control and weight reduction when compared with Januvia, Novo Nordisk said in a statement. Female skiers likelier to injure non-dominant knee

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women skiers are more likely than men to injure a knee while skiing, and a new study shows they are about twice as likely to have that injury occur to their non-dominant leg, often the left one. The study did not go so far as to explain these inequalities, but Dr. Robert Johnson, a sports medicine physician at the University of Vermont College of Medicine said it could be caused "by a whole herd of issues." "Anatomy, strength patterns, muscle patterns, wider pelvis...it all adds up. It's not just one factor," said Johnson, who was not involved in the research. ... Full Story

Coordination issues -- sometimes diagnosed as developmental coordination disorder (DCD) -- prevent people from accomplishing everyday tasks, such as using scissors or buttoning their shirts. Suicide rates rising among Canadian girls

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study finds suicide rates for female teens and preteens in Canada rose over the past few decades while the overall number of kids who took their own lives was dropping. Researchers with Canada's public health agency also noted a change in the youngsters' favored methods of suicide -- from guns or poisons, to suffocation by strangulation -- though they can't say why. "Our message is that all suicide is a tragedy and the trend is very disturbing," said the study's lead author, Robin Skinner, an epidemiologist with the Public Health Agency of Canada in Ottawa. ... Crackdown on prescription pain killers widens to Walgreens
