Turntable.fm Moves The Concert From A Club To A Stadium Top
tumblr_mdgtg9l35z1r0f2iho1_1280Turntable.fm, my music streaming service of choice, just updated its platform this morning. Along with a cleaner, much more sleek interface comes the ability to host huge rooms of listeners. How big? There's no limit. Turntable.fm rooms can be as small as a few people, or, thanks to the latest update, as big as Metallica playing in the U.S.S.R. in 1991.

Night & Day Studios Forgoes Funding, Partners With ScrollMotion To Become One Of The Largest Independent Kids' App Makers On The Market Top
peekabooKids educational and entertainment app maker Night & Day Studios is taking an unconventional path to growth. The startup is announcing today, not a round of venture funding, but rather a partnership with enterprise mobile software company ScrollMotion. The deal brings Night & Day Studios many of the things that an outside round would have otherwise provided: access to more engineers, a way to speed the time to market for their apps, and the ability to expand its company further. The startup also secured an undisclosed investment from entrepreneur and investor Steve Chapman, who joins Night & Day Studios as CFO.

Bindi Karia, Microsoft's UK Startup Maven, Joins Silicon Valley Bank's Euro Push Top
Bindi Kariq photographed by Kevin AboschIn a move which which will send significant waves through the London and European startup eco-system, Bindi Karia, currently the 'Venture Capital/Emerging Business Lead' at Microsoft UK, is departing to join Silicon Valley Bank's UK Branch to lead its push in the early stage tech startup space. Karia has been an early and strong stalwart of the UK and wider European startup scene, supporting many startups and events on the continent. However, after receiving its approval to operate in the UK, SVB — which is best known as a financial partner to the technology, life science, cleantech, private equity and venture capital industries — has clearly been on the hunt for the kind of person that could give them the punch and profile they needed amongst startups. A spokesperson for Microsoft told us "BizSpark will continue and Microsoft remains fully committed to working with start-ups." However there is no word on a replacement just yet.

The service still uses the standard folder system familiar to Dropbox and Google Drive users - you designate certain folders to sync with the cloud and they're updated automatically - but the interface replaces the decidedly messy original interface.

Making Government Suck Less Top
Darrell IssaEditor's note: U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa has represented California's 49th Congressional District in the House of Representatives since 2001. Follow him on Twitter @DarrellIssa. On June 11, 2012, I went all in on open. That day, I traveled to the Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) in New York City to launch the OpenGov Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to developing and deploying technology solutions to help people participate in their governments. But a tool is only as good as the problem it solves, and we face a massive problem. SOPA is only a symptom. Government doesn't understand the Internet, how it works and the awesome power its networked users wield to disrupt almost anything - especially politics itself.

Facebook Stock Price Up 10.3 Percent On The Day As Biggest Lockup Expires, Irrational Changes Are Over Top
Facebook Share PRice copy doneFacebook share prices are up today, with shares at 21.91, 10.32 percent above yesterday’s level. It represents a 4.6 billion market capitalization gain. Today the company is experiencing its biggest stock-lockup expiration, with 773 million Facebook shares (NASDAQ:FB) held by employees now eligible to be sold on the open market. Notably, 504 million shares held by Mark Zuckerberg are eligible, but he declared that he wouldn’t sell them. Facebook's stock closed at 19.86 yesterday. The stock was expected to take a slight hit following this largest lockup expiration, but the market anticipated the hit with a few days of downturn. At the same time, investors are not betting anymore on yet another price drop through short selling — a way to effectively pocket money when shares go down. Short-term profit based on a potential new share price drop is slowly disappearing as short-selling transactions deceased during October. It is good news for the company’s long-term stock price as it starts to attract committed investors. And the fact that share price is slightly up could show that the worst has passed. Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took another measure to dampen today’s lockup expiration. He announced that he wouldn't sell his shares until at least next year. He has 444 million shares and 60 million stock options. More than a stock strategy, it is a sign of confidence in his company. Yesterday, Facebook hired Zynga CFO David Wehner as VP of Corporate Finance & Business Planning. The company revised its forecast for next earnings as well. Both are rational reasons to drive the stock up. Facebook's IPO price was $38 a share when the company started trading in May. But in August, the stock fell to its lowest price at the time — $19.69 — as the initial lockup expiration of 271 million shares kicked in. Accel Partners, Meritech Capital Partners and Greylock Partners all cashed in. Andreessen Horowitz, Microsoft and Kleiner Perkins chose to stay on board. Every lockup expiration brings a different story. On October 24, shares popped more than 22 percent in the wake of favorable earnings. But the first employee lockup expiration led to a smaller 5 percent hit, followed by a few days of downturn for Facebook shares. On December 14, the last meaningful lockup expiration will occur, with 149 million shares available for trading. The very last expiration will kick in on May 18, 2013.

With 50M Users In Tow, OpenDNS Looks To Bring Enterprise Security Into The Mobile Era Top
Screen shot 2012-11-14 at 2.19.23 AMBring up the topic of "enterprise security platforms" around polite company, and you may be quickly shown the door. The subject can be boring, but the truth is that enterprise security writ large are critical, ideally making the Web a safer place for both businesses and consumers by policing malware, botnets, phishing and other malicious software. Of course, today businesses big and small are moving to the cloud, adopting services like Dropbox, Box and Google Apps in droves. In turn, employees are increasingly going mobile, both in where they work and how they work, as they now carry multiple phones, view documents on their iPads, and collaborate on projects hosted on these services outside of the office. Yet, while workforces (enterprise included) are increasingly remote, mobile and nomadic, security services haven't adapted to this change in user behavior. When employees go out on the road, for example, their network's security doesn't follow them.
