Texas authorities say they arrested a suspect Saturday in connection with the execution-style shooting of Deputy Darren H. Goforth at a Houston-area gas station.

Shannon J. Miles is charged with capital murder, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said. Goforth was attacked from behind and shot multiple times as he was refueling his vehicle at a convenience store on Friday night. The motive for the killing is unclear.

The public is being asked to help identify a gunman who fatally shot a Texas deputy while he pumped gas, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said at a briefing today.

"We have not taken anyone into custody. We have people we are talking to, trying to follow-thru methodically. We don't want to be jumping to conclusions," Hickman said.

Deputy Darren H. Goforth, 47, was in uniform when he was shot while filling up his patrol car at a service station Friday night. "This was a cold-blooded execution," the sheriff said.

Earlier today the Texas Department of Public Safety said there was a person of interest in custody. Hickman didn't explain the discrepancy between the reports.

An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced three Al Jazeera journalists to three years in prison.

Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were present for the proceedings. Australian Peter Greste, who was freed in February, was sentenced in absentia.

The journalists were charged with aiding a terrorist organization -- a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, which was outlawed in Egypt after the army overthrew President Mohamed Morsy amid mass protests against his rule in 2013.

CNN Breaking News

This is a special CNN Breaking Newsletter compiled by CNN's Samira Jafari.

Early this morning, two journalists with CNN affiliate WDBJ were killed in a shooting captured during a live broadcast at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Virginia. Here's what we know at this hour:

INVESTIGATION

· The apparent gunman in today's killings of two WDBJ journalists shot himself after authorities confronted him on I-66 in Virginia, officials told CNN's Pamela Brown.

· He is being treated for life-threatening injuries, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

· Law enforcement officials earlier were searching for former WDBJ employee Vester L. Flanagan, who was reported to be driving a gray 2009 Mustang, said a representative of the Augusta County Sheriff's Department in Virginia.

· Flanagan worked at WDBJ as a reporter for about a year using the on-air name Bryce Williams, according to a former WDBJ employee. Flanagan was fired from the station, though the reason was not made public, the ex-employee said.

· ABC News reported that it received a fax containing a 23-page manifesto from someone named Bryce Williams. The document has been handed over to investigators, the news outlet tweeted.

· Twitter and Facebook pages believed to belong to him have been suspended.

· Earlier, two videos posted on those accounts under the name Bryce Williams show someone walking up to the WDBJ news crew and pointing a gun at them. One of the videos shows the gun firing. Another tweet says, "I filmed the shooting."

VICTIMS

Alison Parker, 24, reporter (deceased)

· Parker was the morning reporter for the Roanoke station and a native of Virginia. She started with WDBJ as an intern, her biography on the station's website says.

· She previously worked with another CNN affiliate, WCTI-TV, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

· Parker was a graduate of James Madison University's School of Media Arts and Design in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

· Chris Hurst, a reporter for the station, tweeted that he and Parker "were very much in love" and had just moved in together after dating nine months, "the best nine months of our lives. We wanted to get married. We just celebrated her 24th birthday."

· He continued, "She was the most radiant woman I ever met. And for some reason she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother."

· Parker and photographer Adam Ward, who was also killed in the shooting, worked together every day, Hurst tweeted. "They were a team. I am heartbroken for his fiancée," he wrote.

Adam Ward, 27, photographer (deceased)

· Ward's fiancée was in the television station's control room and saw the shooting as it happened, WDBJ General Manager Jeff Marks told CNN.

· Another journalist at the anchor's desk said Ward was engaged to be married to WDBJ morning show producer Melissa Ott, and Ward recently told her, "I'm going to get out of news. I think I'm going to do something else."

· Ward joined WDBJ in 2011 after graduating from Virginia Tech with a degree in communication and media studies, according to his Facebook page. He enrolled at the university in 2007, the same year a gunman went on a deadly rampage, leaving 32 people dead.

· In April, days before the eighth anniversary of the campus massacre, Ward changed his Facebook profile photo to an image of the Virginia Tech logo with a black ribbon.

Vicki Gardner, executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce (wounded, in surgery)

· Gardner is the woman being interviewed on camera by Parker. She was shot in the back and is in stable condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, per Chris Turnbull, the media spokesman at the hospital.

CNN Breaking News

Buyers are making a comeback on Wall Street. The Dow soared more than 380 points in the first few minutes after Tuesday's opening bell as China attempted to revive its slumping economy.

The big gains mark a rebound from a dramatic wave of selling that has slammed stocks in recent days. The Dow plummeted an unprecedented 1,089 points at Monday's opening bell -- and closed the day down nearly 600 points -- due to deepening fears about China's economic slowdown and its crashing stock market.

Some sort of bounce was anticipated due to the enormous losses inflicted. All three major U.S. equity indexes had plunged into correction territory -- their first 10% decline from recent highs since 2011 -- even though the American economy doesn't appear to be falling off a cliff.

Disapproval of President Barack Obama is on the rise amid dismal reviews of his work on several foreign policy issues and a sense that his policies would lead the country in the wrong direction.

According to a new CNN/ORC Poll, Obama's disapproval rating has inched above 50%, with 51% now saying they disapprove of how he's handling the presidency and 47% approving.

That's a negative shift since late-July, when 49% approved and 47% disapproved. Majorities also disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy and foreign affairs, as 52% say the policies Obama has proposed would move the country in the wrong direction.

The CNN/ORC Poll was conducted by telephone August 13-16 among a random national sample of 1,001 adults. The margin of sampling error for results among the full sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points; it is larger for subgroups.

Donald Trump says it won't take amending the Constitution to change birthright citizenship, which grants citizenship to all children born in the United States.

"The 14th Amendment is very questionable as to whether or not somebody can come over, have a baby and immediately that baby is a citizen," the Republican presidential front-runner told CNN's Chris Cuomo. "Amending is too big a deal... I believe you can win it legally."

Trump also said Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's role in handling emails while she was secretary of state is "devastating" to her campaign. Her actions were "either gross incompetence or criminal, and neither's acceptable to be president," he said.

In the wide-ranging interview, Trump also comments on trade, the Pope and the role of his wife and daughter in his campaign, among other topics.

Former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle will plead guilty to possessing and distributing child pornography as well as traveling across state lines to have sex with at least two teenage girls, federal prosecutors say.

Fogle faces between five and 12 1/2 years in prison under a plea deal reached with prosecutors. Fogle will also adhere to a pornography ban, undergo treatment for sexual disorders and may not have unsupervised visits with minors.

Fogle became famous in 2000 when the sandwich chain released commercials centered on his claims that he dropped about 245 pounds in one year, thanks in part to a diet involving Subway subs.

Subway suspended its relationship with Fogle last month after investigators raided his Indiana home, and has since tweeted that it no longer has a relationship with him.

CNN Breaking News

Since announcing his campaign in late June, Donald Trump has quickly leapt to the top of the Republican field, leading recent polls nationally, in Iowa and in New Hampshire. And now, for the first time in CNN/ORC polling, his gains among the Republican Party have boosted him enough to be competitive in the general election.

The poll finds Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by just 6 points, a dramatic tightening since July. Trump is the one of three Republican candidates who have been matched against Clinton multiple times in CNN/ORC polling to significantly whittle the gap between himself and the Democratic frontrunner. He trailed Clinton by 16 points in a July poll, and narrowed that gap by boosting his standing among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (from 67% support in July to 79% now), men (from 46% in July to 53% now) and white voters (from 50% to 55%).

But Clinton still holds the cards overall in the race for the White House, leading four Republican contenders: She tops Trump and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker by 6 points each among registered voters, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by 9 points, and businesswoman Carly Fiorina by 10 points.

More than any other Republican candidate for president, Donald Trump has won his party's trust on top issues and now stands as the clear leader in the race for the Republican nomination. A new CNN/ORC poll finds Trump with the support of 24% of Republican registered voters. His nearest competitor, Jeb Bush, stands 11 points behind at 13%. Just behind Bush, Ben Carson has 9%, Marco Rubio and Scott Walker 8%, Rand Paul 6%, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina and John Kasich all land at 5%, with Mike Huckabee rounding out the top 10 at 4%.

Trump is the biggest gainer in the poll, up 6 points since July according to the first nationwide CNN/ORC poll since the top candidates debated in Cleveland on August 6. Carson gained 5 points and Fiorina 4 points. Trump has also boosted his favorability numbers among Republicans: 58% have a favorable view of Trump now; that figure stood at 50% in the July survey.

Hillary Clinton is firmly in the lead among Iowa caucusgoers, holding a 50% to 31% lead over upstart Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to the first CNN/ORC Poll of those voters in the state this cycle. Vice President Joe Biden, who has yet to decide whether to make a run for the presidency, lands in third place with 12%, with the rest of the field at 1% or less.

The race reflects two broad divides among Iowa's Democratic voters: a gender gap and an ideological split. Among women, Clinton tops Sanders by more than 30 points, 58% to 26%. Among men, the two are even: 38% back Clinton, 37% Sanders. Likewise, among the party's moderates, 57% back Clinton, 21% Sanders, while liberals split 46% for Clinton to 41% for Sanders. Liberals are most apt to say they are firm in their choice: Fully 42% say they've definitely decided whom to support, compared with 30% overall.

Should Biden decide not to run, the poll suggests Clinton would get a bigger boost than Sanders. Reallocating Biden's supporters to their second choice candidate, 58% would back Clinton, 32% Sanders, 2% former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, 1% former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb and less than 1% would back former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

The results came from 429 likely Democratic caucusgoers. The poll was conducted August 7-11, with a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

Donald Trump has a significant lead in the race to win over likely Iowa caucusgoers, according to the first CNN/ORC Poll in the state this cycle. Overall, Trump tops the field with 22%.

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson follows with 14%, bumping Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker down to third place with 9%. Walker had held the top spot in the most recent public polling in Iowa. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz follows at 8%, with businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 7%. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is tied at 5% with Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio. The rest of the field stands at 3% or lower.

Two-thirds of Iowa Republicans who are likely to attend the caucus say they're still trying to decide whom to support.

Trump's advantages are not universal. He faces a large gender gap: While holding a 15-point lead over his nearest competitor among men (27% Trump to 12% Walker, Carson at 10%), he trails among women (20% back Carson, 15% Trump, and 11% support Fiorina).

Donald Trump's campaign said today it has fired top political adviser Roger Stone.

"Mr. Trump fired Roger Stone last night. We have a tremendously successful campaign and Roger wanted to use the campaign for his own personal publicity. He has had a number of articles about him recently and Mr. Trump wants to keep the focus of the campaign on how to Make America Great Again," a campaign spokesperson told CNN's Dana Bash.

Stone, however, told CNN's MJ Lee that he resigned this morning and denies being fired.

President Barack Obama is standing by his comparison of Iranian hardliners to Republicans who he says are dead set on derailing any nuclear deal.

"What I said is absolutely true, factually," Obama told CNN's Fareed Zakaria in an interview that will air in full Sunday.

"The truth of the matter is, inside of Iran, the people most opposed to the deal are the Revolutionary Guard, the Quds Force, hardliners who are implacably opposed to any cooperation with the international community," Obama said.

Donald Trump seized the tension in the opening moments and dominated the debate. He refused to rule out a third-party presidential bid and blasted many of his fellow candidates.

Rand Paul and Chris Christie engaged in a spirited debate over civil liberties while Jeb Bush cautioned against "divisive" language that could hurt the party.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, an influential Jewish Democrat who's poised to assume leadership of his party in the Senate, will oppose President Barack Obama's nuclear deal with Iran, he announced on Thursday evening.

"After deep study, careful thought and considerable soul-searching, I have decided I must oppose the agreement and will vote yes on a motion of disapproval," Schumer wrote in a 1,600-word post on the website Medium that posted during the first Republican presidential debate.

"I will vote to disapprove the agreement, not because I believe war is a viable or desirable option, nor to challenge the path of diplomacy," he added later. "It is because I believe Iran will not change, and under this agreement it will be able to achieve its dual goals of eliminating sanctions while ultimately retaining its nuclear and non-nuclear power."

Rand Paul and Chris Christie got into a yelling match over NSA record collection during Thursday night's GOP candidate debate.

"I want to collect more records from terrorists, but less records from innocent Americans," Paul said.

"That's a completely ridiculous answer," Christie shot back. "How are you supposed to know? ... When you're sitting in a subcommittee blowing hot air, then you can say things like that."

Fox showed the lengthy confrontation on a split screen -- with no time buzzer. It was one of many jaw-dropping moments in the first hour of the debate, which included fellow candidate Donald Trump refusing to support the eventual nominee -- unless it was him.

President Barack Obama, seeking to amplify his campaign to garner congressional support for the Iran nuclear deal, declared that the decision facing lawmakers next month is the most significant since Congress voted to invade Iraq more than a decade ago.

The 2002 Iraq vote, which spawned foreign policy headaches for the past two administrations, was driven by war-hungry politicians, Obama claimed. He said that opponents of his agreement with Iran were deploying similar arguments ahead of a September vote in Congress on the agreement.

With a little more than a month before the congressional review period expires, the administration has launched an aggressive lobbying effort to convince Democrats of the deal's merits. They've largely written off trying to convince Republicans, many of whom denounced the negotiations that led to the accord.
