Breaking News

Khizr Khan, the father of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq in 2004, said Sunday that Donald Trump has a "black soul," indicating he lacks empathy and compassion.

Khan told CNN's Jim Acosta on "State of the Union" that he hopes Trump's family will "teach him some empathy."

"He is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this country," Khan said. "The love and affection that we have received affirms that our grief -- that our experience in this country has been correct and positive. The world is receiving us like we have never seen. They have seen the blackness of his character, of his soul."

Khan moved into the national spotlight after he pulled out a pocket copy of the Constitution during his speech at the Democratic National Convention. He said Trump would have barred his Muslim family from entering the United States.

Breaking News: Dem convention closes

The 2016 campaign has entered a new phase as both parties have wrapped up their nominating conventions.

At the Democratic convention, Hillary Clinton nodded to her status as the only woman ever to accept the nomination of a major U.S. political party: "When there are no ceilings, the sky's the limit.”

Clinton drew a contrast with Donald Trump's acceptance address at the Republican convention last week: “I sweat the details of policy.”

On national security, Clinton questioned whether Trump “has the temperament to be commander-in-chief.”

"A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons," Clinton said. Read Clinton’s speech in full.

Stephen Miller, Trump's senior policy adviser, hit back with a statement blasting Clinton's speech as an "insulting collection of cliches and recycled rhetoric."

Earlier on the convention’s final night, the father of a Muslim-American soldier who was killed in the Iraq War accused Trump of "smearing the character" of religious minorities like his family.

“Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution?" Khizr Khan said, addressing Trump. "I will gladly lend you my copy.”

Breaking News: Democratic convention

President Barack Obama said that America is already great and does not need a "self-declared savior" like Donald Trump to fix it, adding that only Hillary Clinton is fit to succeed him.

Obama said Americans are not a frightened, fearful people living in a "divided crime scene" as envisioned by Trump, and can only solve their problems by coming together and being faithful to the nation's founding ideals.

"Our power doesn't come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order as long as we do things his way. We don’t look to be ruled," Obama said. He was joined on stage by Clinton at the end of the third night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

“There has never been a man or a woman -- not me, not Bill, nobody -- more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as President of the United States of America,” Obama said.

Democrats made Hillary Clinton the first female presidential nominee of a major party in the nation's history, shattering one of the last remaining glass ceilings in American politics.

Later tonight, former President Bill Clinton is expected to make the case for his wife in a live address to Democrats.

Breaking News: Democratic convention

Bernie Sanders empathized with his disappointed supporters but told them firmly that Hillary Clinton must win in November.

"Any objective observer will conclude that -- based on her ideas and her leadership -- Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States," Sanders told Democratic National Convention delegates, some of them in tears during his speech.

The senator from Vermont sought to unite Democrats on the opening night of their convention, even as primary season divides were exacerbated by a leak of emails showing party leaders sided against his campaign. At various moments, shouts of "Bernie! Bernie!" rang out during speeches.

There was an orchestrated effort by some of the party's most popular figures to heal the divides and bring Sanders supporters to Clinton's side.

First lady Michelle Obama delivered an emphatic endorsement of Clinton, declaring "I'm with her" and taking a sharp swipe at Republican nominee Donald Trump, sparking a euphoric reception.

Liberal heroine Sen. Elizabeth Warren slammed Trump as a man who skipped on his debts and cheated other people, while saying Clinton was one of the "smartest, toughest, most tenacious people on this planet."

Breaking News

Donald Trump comes out of his convention ahead of Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, topping her 44% to 39% in a four-way matchup including Gary Johnson (9%) and Jill Stein (3%) and by three points in a two-way head-to-head, 48% to 45%. That latter finding represents a 6-point convention bounce for Trump, which are traditionally measured in two-way matchups.

There hasn't been a significant post-convention bounce in CNN's polling since 2000. That year Al Gore and George W. Bush both boosted their numbers by an identical 8 points post-convention before ultimately battling all the way to the Supreme Court.

The new findings mark Trump's best showing in a CNN/ORC Poll against Clinton since September 2015. Trump's new edge rests largely on increased support among independents, 43% of whom said that Trump's convention in Cleveland left them more likely to back him, while 41% were dissuaded. Pre-convention, independents split 34% Clinton to 31% Trump, with sizable numbers behind Johnson (22%) and Stein (10%). Now, 46% say they back Trump, 28% Clinton, 15% Johnson and 4% Stein.

Trump's newfound lead is also boosted by a sharp increase in support from whites without college degrees. In the new poll they break 62% for Trump to 23% for Clinton, while whites who hold at least a bachelor's degree have actually tilted more pro-Clinton since the convention (from a 40% to 40% split pre-convention to a 44% Clinton to 39% Trump divide now).

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee at the end of the party's convention, which is set to begin here Monday.

The Florida congresswoman's resignation -- under pressure from top Democrats -- comes amid hackers' release of emails that show DNC staffers favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the party's 2016 nominating contest.

Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation in a statement Sunday afternoon, saying she remains committed to seeing Clinton elected president.

"Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention," Wasserman Schultz said in her statement.

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine took the stage as Hillary Clinton's running mate Saturday in Miami, offering words of welcome right off the bat -- in Spanish.

"Bienvenidos a todos," he said, a phrase that translates to "welcome to everyone."

The appearance at a campaign rally at Florida International University marked the official unveiling of the presumptive Democratic ticket that will face off against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

"Sen. Tim Kaine is everything Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not," Clinton said. "He is qualified to step into this job and lead on Day 1. And he is a progressive who likes to get things done."

ISIS is claiming responsibility for killing at least 61 people and wounding more than 200 during a peaceful demonstration in Kabul by a minority group Saturday.

Two ISIS fighters detonated their suicide belts among the protesters, according to ISIS' media wing, Amaq.

The attack, the worst in terms of casualties in several weeks, drew attention to ISIS instead of the Taliban, which had been credited with recent bombings.

Breaking News: Munich attack

At least nine people were killed when gunfire erupted at a shopping center in Munich, Germany, in what police officials said "looks like a terror attack."

Munich police said they were trying to verify whether one of the bodies could be one of the shooters.

Police said no one was in custody, and the city was under a virtual lockdown, with residents being urged to stay home, restaurants and other business closing and public transit shutting down.

The shooting broke out at a McDonald's across from the Olympia shopping mall at about 5:50 p.m. local time, police spokeswoman Claudia Küntzel said. Shots also were fired inside the mall, witnesses said.

On Facebook, police said gunfire was reported in several locations and that witnesses said they saw three people with firearms.

A witness identified as Lauretta told CNN her son was in a bathroom with a shooter at the McDonald's. "That's where he loaded his weapon," she said. "I hear like an alarm and boom, boom, boom... And he's still killing the children. The children were sitting to eat. They can't run."

President Barack Obama said that Donald Trump offered a deeply pessimistic outlook at the Republican National Convention that doesn't match reality.

Noting he didn't watch Trump's acceptance speech on Thursday -- "I've got a lot of stuff to do," he noted -- Obama said he read news coverage of the remarks.

"This idea that America is somehow on the verge of collapse, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere, doesn't really jibe with the experience of most people," Obama said during a press conference in the White House East Room alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

"America is much less violent than it was 20 or 30 years ago," Obama said, citing statistics that he said showed crime rates have fallen under his presidency.

Newsletter: Trump accepts nomination

Donald Trump conjured a dire picture Thursday of an America sliding deeper into poverty, violence and corruption and declared himself the only person who could avert disaster.

Accepting the Republican nomination in Cleveland, the billionaire pledged to be a voice for working Americans, restore law and order and confound elites and doubters by winning the White House in November.

"Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it," Trump said.

Trump's address was the most crucial moment yet in his transformation, from a brash tycoon and reality star to a presidential nominee with an expansive vision of disruptive change. The speech clocked in at 1 hour 15 minutes, surpassing Bill Clinton's 1992 marathon.

While hammering Hillary Clinton, Trump attempted to soothe divisions in the country and his party, where tensions were exposed Wednesday by Ted Cruz's refusal to endorse Trump.

"Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life," he said. "Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country."

The 2017 NBA All-Star Game will move from Charlotte, North Carolina, because of that state's controversial transgender bathroom law, the league has announced.

House Bill 2, signed into law in March, prohibits people from entering bathrooms that do not match the sex on their birth certificates -- a distinction many claim discriminates against the LGBT community.

Newsletter: Fireworks at GOP convention

Donald Trump downplayed Ted Cruz’s decision to withhold an endorsement during his convention speech, even as the move was savaged by Trump’s allies.

Trump tweeted, "Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn't honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal!"

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- a former presidential candidate and now a Trump backer -- blasted Cruz's speech in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash.

"I think it was awful," Christie said. "And quite frankly, I think it was selfish."

A lawyer for Trump, Michael Cohen, called Cruz’s speech “political suicide.”

As delegates began to protest, Cruz's wife, Heidi, was heckled by Trump supporters shouting "Goldman Sachs!" and escorted out by security. She is an employee of Goldman Sachs.

Cruz, who has long sought the support of GOP megadonor Sheldon Adelson, was turned away when he tried to enter Adelson's suite after the rebuke, three sources told CNN.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who accepted the nomination as Trump's vice presidential nominee at the end of the session, sidestepped when asked about Cruz's speech.

"I am just grateful for all the support we are receiving, and I am excited about the future," Pence said.

Newsletter: GOP convention

With the third night of the Republican convention getting underway, CNN unveiled changes to its projected electoral map, making Pennsylvania a battleground state and moving Colorado and Wisconsin to "lean Democratic."

Wednesday night’s convention speakers include Donald Trump’s VP pick, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Former GOP primary rivals Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Scott Walker will also speak. All three would be possible candidates again in 2020 if Trump loses this year.

In other developments:

  • The U.S. Secret Service is investigating an informal adviser to Trump's presidential campaign after the adviser called for Hillary Clinton's execution.
  • Cleveland police made multiple arrests and reported that two officers had been injured in a scuffle after a protester attempted to light an American flag on fire outside the security barrier surrounding the convention.
  • Trump and John Kasich's teams were at war over whether the Republican presidential nominee ever seriously wanted the Ohio governor to join the ticket.

RNC: What you missed, what's in store

Day two of the Republican National Convention is underway in Cleveland. Here’s what’s happened so far and what is to come.

-Donald Trump's presidential campaign has no plans to fire anybody or to take any disciplinary action against anyone for the Melania Trump speech plagiarism controversy, CNN learned Tuesday.

-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort denied allegations that Melania plagiarized a Michelle Obama speech, calling the accusation "just really absurd."

-The campaign manager Donald Trump fired last month, Corey Lewandowski, says the person responsible for writing Melania Trump's campaign speech should be fired.

- New Jersey governor and Trump ally Chris Christie defended the speech, saying, "There's no way that Melania Trump was plagiarizing Michelle Obama's speech."

-Sean Spicer, the Republican National Committee's chief strategist, invoked "My Little Pony" in defending the speech in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

-White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest addressed the allegations saying, "As it relates to Mrs. Trump's speech, I'll let all of you weigh in on all of that and try to learn more about how exactly it was written."

What to watch for tonight:
-There's a major piece of business: Officially nominating Trump for president and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence for vice president. The roll call begins at 6 p.m. ET.
-Speeches from Ben Carson and top congressional Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan.
-Also, look on the podium for Chris Christie, who just lost out in the vice presidential sweepstakes, a couple of Trump’s children and non-political speakers, including UFC president Dana White.

Some Republican National Convention delegates broke out into a floor protest after GOP officials dismissed a last-gasp effort by anti-Donald Trump groups to force an embarrassing protest vote against the presumptive presidential nominee.

A group of anti-Trump delegates submitted signatures to try to force a vote on the rules of the convention -- a procedure normally done quietly at the start of each convention.

The rules were adopted by voice vote. After frantic protests, a second voice vote was taken as Trump opponents shouted repeatedly for a roll call vote. The convention chairman then said there were not enough signatures to force the roll call.

Breaking News

Baltimore Police Lt. Brian Rice was found not guilty on all charges tied to the death of Freddie Gray.

Rice, the highest-ranking officer to stand trial in Gray's death, had been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.

Judge Barry Williams issued the ruling. Rice is the fourth of the six officers charged in the case to stand trial. Earlier this year, officers Edward Nero and Caesar Goodson Jr. were acquitted on all charges in bench trials.

The trial of officer William Porter ended in a mistrial in December after a jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on any of the four charges against him.

Breaking News

A gunman killed three law enforcement officers and wounded three others in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday. The gunman died in a shootout with police.

Here’s the latest:

SHOOTING TIMELINE

Around 8:40 a.m. (9:40 a.m. ET), police received a call of a man carrying a rifle, dressed in all black, walking along Airline Highway.

At 8:42 a.m., there was a report of shots fired.

At 8:44 a.m., officers engaged with the shooter.

The shooting was over by 8:47 a.m.

Law enforcement sources told CNN’s Pam Brown that investigators suspect the officers were “lured in” by the shooter, effectively an ambush.

SHOOTER

Baton Rouge police have identified the shooter as 29-year-old Gavin Long, a black male from Kansas City, Missouri.

Long was a former Marine who was discharged at the rank of sergeant in 2010, according to the U.S. military.

Long died in a shootout with police.

Today, July 17, was his 29th birthday.

Police are not seeking any other shooters at this time, according to Louisiana State Police superintendent Col. Michael D. Edmonson.

POLICE DEAD AND WOUNDED

Baton Rouge police officer Montrell Jackson was one of three officers killed in the shooting, according to Jackson's aunt.

The other two law enforcement officers killed have not been identified.

Three law enforcement officers were wounded. Of these, one is in critical condition; one is in fair condition; one is in “non-life threatening condition.”

All six officers were wounded by gunfire.

INVESTIGATION

Contrary to an earlier witness account, the police timeline does not indicate any other kind of shooting before police arrived on the scene.

The witness, Brady Vancel, said he saw a man in a black shirt and shorts firing a long rifle, and a man not moving on the ground in a red shirt, about 45 seconds before the police arrived.

Police say the shooter was seen earlier in the day, waiting in a car near police headquarters.

Autopsies for the three police officers killed will be performed Monday, according to East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner William “Beau” Clark.

The shooter’s autopsy will take place later in the week because the scene is still being processed.

Investigators were reviewing a video shot at the scene to see if the shooter had any accomplices.

REACTION

President Barack Obama condemned violence against law enforcement and called on Americans to "temper our words and open our hearts."

"We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against law enforcement. Attacks on police are an attack on all of us, and the rule of law that makes society possible," Obama said, speaking from the White House press briefing room.
