Why Obama's position on Egypt's Mubarak was too little, too late

Is Jordan Next?
Tue, 1 Feb 2011 10:22 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - In Tunisia, President Ben Ali has fled the country. In Egypt, crowds of 200,000 are hanging President Mubarak in effigy. In Syria and Yemen, protests are roiling. And in Jordan, King Abdullah II seems to be trying to jump out in front of a similar wave of unrest. The king fired his prime minister, Samir al-Rifai, and jettisoned his cabinet this week, as thousands of Jordanians demonstrated in the capital and elsewhere. The move is widely being seen as a preemptive, conciliatory gesture, though it's not clear whether it will be enough to mollify the protesters. The U.S. has reason to keep an eye on this story, since Jordan is a close ally of American interests in the region. Here's what's going on and the main questions going forward: Full Story

Next step for the 'Obamacare' individual mandate
Tue, 1 Feb 2011 12:57 pm PST
The Christian Science Monitor - Journalists overlooked a key footnote in Monday’s court ruling striking down the new health-care law as unconstitutional. US District Judge Roger Vinson may have intended his legal aside to be incidental. But Congress shouldn’t. Full Story

Bill Requring Gun Ownership Introduced in South Dakota
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 09:30 am PST
ContributorNetwork - One of the main arguments against the health care reform law is that it requires people to buy health care insurance no matter if they want or need it. Judge Vinson very ably used this argument to declare the law, also known as Obamacare, unconstitutional. Full Story

MILITARY SPENDING, FARM SUBSIDIES ARE SAFE FROM BUDGET CUTS
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 04:53 pm PST
Cynthia Tucker - WASHINGTON -- In their campaign to whack away at what they describe as an overgrown and out-of-control federal government, conservative Republicans insist "everything is on the table." No programs are too popular, no entitlements too sacred to escape a ferociously wielded budget knife, they claim. Full Story

Wed, 2 Feb 2011 04:53 pm PST
Ann Coulter - Fresh off of blaming Jared Loughner's killing spree in the Tucson mall on Sarah Palin, liberals are now blaming it on high-capacity magazines. They might as well imprison everyone named "Jared" to prevent a crime like this from ever happening again. Full Story

Should the US Suspend Egypt's $1.5 Billion Aid Package? What About Cutting Military Aid Altogether?
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 04:28 pm PST
The Nation - The Nation -- Most Republicans in Congress are supporting President Obama’s tepid and uneven response to the pro-democracy protests in Egypt. No surprise there; the mixed signals sent by the current administration’s have about them the familiar incoherence of the Bush-Cheney years. Full Story

Planned Parenthood Fires Manager After Undercover Video
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 03:35 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - The undercover Planned Parenthood exposé has claimed a scalp. On Tuesday, the anti-abortion group Live Action published a disturbing video between a couple and a Planned Parenthood manager. In the video, the couple poses as sex traffickers and ask the Planned Parenthood manager for help bending the rules pertaining to 14 and 13-year-old girls receiving abortions. The manager, identified as Amy Woodruff, doesn't seem upset that the couple is seeking advice about underage prostitutes who work for them. In fact, she advises them on how to receive abortions without setting off red flags. "The only thing that you do have to be careful is if they are a minor we are obligated if we hear any certain information to kind of report," the manager explains. She then says the girls should lie about the age of their sexual partners so there's "not too much of an age gap." In response, Planned Parenthood has now fired the manager at the New Jersey clinic from the video. Full Story

Video: Stop Everything, Anderson Cooper Got Kicked
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 03:16 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - In case you haven't noticed, there's a revolution happening in Egypt. That means a lot of pushing, shoving and lighting yourself on fire. When Egyptians injure each other on the streets of Cairo, it's pretty big news. But when Egyptians injure CNN's Anderson Cooper, it's really big news. Today the network's Silver Fox was in the middle of a crowd of protesters who were "throwing punches and kicks" and clocking him "in the face." The "Most Trusted Name In News" devoted two segments to Cooper's misadventure (to be fair, there's been some pretty disturbing targeting of journalists, which we talked about earlier today): Full Story

How to Mourn the White Stripes' Breakup
Wed, 2 Feb 2011 03:14 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - On Wednesday, the blues-rock duo The White Stripes announced that they were splitting up. The band, consisting of singer/guitarist Jack White and his ex-wife, drummer Meg White, formed in Detroit in 1997. Over the course of the next decade, they became one of the world's biggest bands, on the strength of singles like Fell in Love With a Girl, Seven Nation Army, and My Doorbell. The dissolution of the band may not come as a complete shock to fans, since they hadn't released an album since 2007, and Jack White has been busy with side projects in the meantime. Still, devotees are taking it hard, if the shockwaves of grief spreading through Twitter are any indication. Here are a few suggestions for coping with the loss: Full Story

Wed, 2 Feb 2011 11:45 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - According to documents released by Wikileaks and obtained by The Daily Telegraph, the FBI is looking for four men thought to have some connection with the September 11 attacks. The documents, which were sent in February 2010 from the American embassy in Qatar to the Department of Homeland Security, describe a group of three Qatari men who allegedly visited the World Trade Center and the White House in August 2001, just weeks before the attacks. They also spent time in California, where they met up with a fourth man, Mohamed Al Mansoori. All four men are now being sought by the FBI. Here's what we know and what's being guessed: Full Story
