| Flayvr, A Mobile App That Automatically Creates Photo Albums, Raises $450K Seed Round | Top |
The proliferation of smartphones has made it incredibly easy for us to take numerous photos and record videos, but it has also left us to deal with massive media archives stored on our devices. When you need to locate one specific photo, or find those you shot at a given event, it can be difficult. A new mobile application called Flayvr, aims to help with this by automatically organizing photos and videos into collections, titling them appropriately, and offering tools for quick, one-click sharing to social networks. The company, based in Tel Aviv, has also just closed on a seed round of $450,000 from Israeli angel investors.
| ZocDoc Debuts 'Check-In' To Let You Fill Out Those Pesky Medical Forms Before Your Doctor Visit | Top |
ZocDoc, the startup that makes a web-centric booking platform for medical appointments, today is launching its first new product since its inception: ‘Check-In,’ a service that lets patients fill out those pesky medical forms online prior to their doctor’s appointment. ZocDoc says that Check-In will be free for patients and come at no additional cost to medical providers who are existing users of ZocDoc. The Check-In feature also saves patient information so that forms can be pre-filled before appointments. According to ZocDoc, this has been the top requested feature from current ZocDoc users. The roll-out of Check-In will be gradual — starting today, 10 percent of ZocDoc patients will be able to use the feature, and it will be rolled out to all users over the coming weeks. On the whole, ZocDoc’s growth has been going strong since it launched way back in 2007. The company currently works with healthcare providers in 31 metro areas in the United States, and is available in a total of 1400 cities, purportedly covering more than 1/3 of the US population. ZocDoc has raised some serious venture capital funding from big-name backers — a total of $95 million to date from the likes of Goldman Sachs, Khosla Ventures and DST Global, to name just a few. Healthcare is an increasingly attractive space for tech founders, but it’s also a very difficult one to get a real foothold in; so it’s good to see ZocDoc iterating on products that could have broad consumer usefulness and appeal such as Check-In. Here are a few screenshots of ZocDoc Check-In (click to enlarge):
| With Over 7M Users On The iPhone, Camera Awesome Goes Big Screen With An iPad App | Top |
SmugMug's Camera Awesome is an App Store success story, with more than 7 million users on board since its debut on Apple's mobile software marketplace earlier this year in February. Now, SmugMug is hoping that success can extend to the iPad, with a new, universal version of its app that brings a lot of photographer-focused feature to Apple's big-screen iOS device.
| TomTom Outs A $50 Android Navigation App, Forgets To Make It Compatible With Popular Phones | Top |
First, the good news: There is now a full-featured TomTom navigation Android app. It features live traffic data, multi-stop routing, and a gorgeous interface. But there is a bit of bad news, too. In fact it's rather funny in a sad way: The app is not compatible with recent flagship devices including the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Galaxy Note.

| From The Smoke And Fire Dept: Huawei Denies (Again) It's Launching Its Own Mobile OS | Top |
Last week saw a little skirmish in the mobile platform wars, when news broke that Huawei, which makes smartphones based on Google's Android OS, was working on an operating system of its own -- first reported by Reuters and then picked up by others. Curious to hear from the horse's mouth, we got in touch. And it turns out that Huawei, in fact, has "no plans" to launch an OS any time soon.

The U.S.-based publicly listed company already has a Central European presence in Germany (launched in July 2010), Austria (launched in October 2012), and Switzerland (launched in September 2011) --- though Qype itself is also present in those countries and launched in Poland as far back as December 2008.
| Accel Partners Big Data Fund Invests $4.3 Million In Trifacta | Top |
Today Trifacta, a company building a cross-platform interface for dealing with big data, announced that it received a $4.3 million investment from the Accel Partners Big Data Fund. Trifacta is a team of computer scientists with deep experience in data visualization trying to pull off one of the holy grails of data tech: making big data accessible to the non-Phd level analyst.
| White Bull Summit In Barcelona Puts A Filter On The Exit Market In Europe | Top |
For the past three years the White Bull Summit in Barcelona has been doing something that too few tech conferences in Europe really do: talk about exits for startups. In recent times it's become so common to have a conference about early stage startups that almost no-one has really concentrated on this crucial life-cycle for companies, and perhaps the only other contender for this discussion has be NOAH in London which tends to attract late stage VC and Private Equity. So it's refreshing to see founder Farley Duvall continue to plough this furrow. Duvall piloted Red Herring's brand in Europe for many years, but with the decline of that brand he has struck out with his own, so he's as much an entrepreneur as the tech companies he puts on stage.
