Firefox Beta Now Features New IonMonkey JavaScript Compiler, Built-In PDF Viewer, Retina and Touch Support Top
firefox_auroraToday is beta-release day at Mozilla, and the organization is launching new beta versions of Firefox for the desktop and Android. This time around, the desktop version is set to get the most interesting updates, including the new IonMonkey just-in-time JavaScript compiler, as well as support for Macs with Retina displays and W3C Touch Event support for machines with touchscreens. On Android, Firefox now offers better phishing protection and - as an opt-in - search suggestions.
 
Zillow Acquires Rental And Real Estate Search Site HotPads For $16 Million To Grow Its Rental Marketplace Top
HotPadsLogo300dpiZillow just announced that it has acquired the San Francisco-based rental and real estate search site HotPads for $16 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2012. This acquisition marks the first time that Zillow has acquired a primarily consumer-facing company and Zillow says it is making this acquisition to "expand the size of its growing rental audience and extend the reach of its marketing tools and productivity solutions for rental professionals."
 
Veenome Raises Another $600K To Translate Video Content Into Machine-Readable Data Top
veenome-logoVeenome, a startup that analyzes video content to improve ad targeting (as well as analytics and SEO), just announced that it has raised $600,000 in new funding. The company is also announcing a partnership with video ad network BrightRoll. Veenome CEO Kevin Lenane said this is part of a larger shift in strategy — the startup originally focused on providing its services to publishers, but is now trying to work with networks. Turns out that selling to publishers was a bigger challenge than expected (Lenane said many are "not as motivated by revenue as you might think"), while the new approach should give Veenome wider reach.

It's only been two or so months since LG pulled officially pulled back the curtains on its flagship Optimus G smartphone, but it seems the Korean company isn't done fiddling with the formula just yet. placeLocation-based note-sharing app Findery, which famously had to change its name in July, thinks it might be onto a winner, creating a site for people to bookmark locations. But in fact, it was pre-dated by a European startup which today comes out of beta. We've been tracking the slick Everplaces since March - we called it a Pinterest for location - and have been impressed with its ability to create a destination app for travellers out of allowing them to bookmark and share interesting locations. It now launches a full-blown new iOS app.
