| Google Now Returning Month Of December To Nexus Devices With Android 4.2.1 OTA Update | Top |
Google is in the process of rolling out Android 4.2.1 to at least Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 devices as an over-the-air update. The minor update brings a fix for an embarrassing omission on Google's part: The month of December. December was left out of the People app, meaning it couldn't be chosen as either a birthday or anniversary for contacts on Android 4.2 devices.
| Like Mobile Shopping, Mobile Games Traffic Surges Worldwide During Thanksgiving Holiday | Top |
Americans weren't just buying things online during last week's holiday. According to new numbers from Chartboost, they were also glued to their mobile devices playing games, with those types of mobile software titles experiencing surges in traffic, as measured by sessions per day, and also with cost per install (CPI) going up outside the U.S., but experiencing a small dip within the country.
| Minecraft Raspberry Pi Edition To Help Kids Learn To Code While They Build | Top |
The Raspberry Pi Foundation is on a mission to get more kids to learn to code -- and what better way to get children excited about the power of programming than by involving virtual block-builder game Minecraft? The Foundation is aiming to release a free version of Minecraft: Pi Edition by the end of the year which will allow kids to use text commands to control the world.
| Kantar Worldpanel: Apple Shoots Back To Top Of U.S. Smartphone Sales On An iPhone 5 Rocket, Android Leading Elsewhere | Top |
Samsung may be be the world's most popular smartphone brand, but in the influential U.S. market, Apple has climbed back to the top of the pack on the strength of its iPhone 5 sales. According to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, the WPP market research subsidiary, Apple's newest smartphone accounted for just over 48% of all smartphone sales in the country, letting it get past Android -- which, across all the different devices running on the platform -- accounted for 46.7% of sales in the last 12 weeks ending October 28.
| Hot Startups In The City Of Gaudi — TechCrunch Barcelona Meetup, December 13 | Top |
While a lot of heat has been generated around the startup scenes in London and Berlin, Barcelona has been slowly growing a scene focused both on the Spanish and Latin American markets and a new generation of internationally focused startups. Not unlike Berlin, the tech scene over the years has attracted international people drawn by the proximity to Europe's main hubs and, let's face it, the amazing weather and lifestyle. And although Spain's economic troubles have affected the Catalan capital, the Barcelona city council and a number of local entrepreneurs have been whipping up a great new scene with a number of initiatives like District 22@, the Barcelona Tech Bridges to Silicon Valley networking events, and BarcelonaIO. That's why we are putting together a TechCrunch Mini Meetup there on December 13, and we want investors and startups to come.
| The Rising Science Of Social Influence — How Predictable Is Your Online Behaviour? | Top |
Techcrunch recently ran a piece by Michael Wu of Lithium. The following is a response written by Ferenc Huszar, who, prior to joining Peer Index PeerIndex as lead data scientist, was was a PhD student at the Machine Learning Lab at Cambridge University. Quantifying aspects of human behaviour and social phenomena has never been simple. But in today's world, one thing is inescapable. We are creating a new market and ecosystem of personal preferences and patterns of influence. We are creating an exponential amount of data - 3.2bn likes and comments per day, over 400m tweets per day, and rapidly being joined by Pins and Cinema.grams. We are connected in some way to more people than ever in history - an average of 229 friends of Facebook, the ability to be magnified to hundreds of thousands or millions on Twitter.
| Backed By $500K From Battery Ventures, Science Inc.'s Fresh Dish Launches Ready-To-Cook Dinner Kits Delivered To Your Door | Top |
Fresh Dish, a new food delivery startup incubated by Science and backed by $500,000 in seed funding from Battery Ventures, is today launching its online ordering website, soon to be followed by an iOS application. Unlike restaurant delivery services, Fresh Dish isn't about ordering ready-to-eat meals from local eateries, but rather ready-to-cook meals which can be prepared in under 30 minutes.
| Nintendo's Wii Mini Tipped By Best Buy Canada For December 7 Release | Top |
Sony's PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360 have both seen physical hardware design changes in their many years on the market, but the Wii has remained mostly the same Wii since its launch, with a minor update last year that made it slightly smaller. Now that Nintendo has released the Wii U, however, it looks like a bigger change is on the way for its older console, called the Wii Mini.
| After Losing Over Half Its 9M Users In A Pedophile Scandal, Habbo Hotel Hopes For New Life As A Gaming Platform | Top |
Habbo Hotel, the under-21 social networking site that had to close down and then "mute" users over the summer after it was discovered that people were using it to send minors illicit content, is opening a new line of business: as a youth-focused online gaming platform.
| Ericsson Files Patent Suit Against Samsung In The U.S. After Nearly Two Years' Of FRAND Talks Fail To Reach A Deal (Updated) | Top |

| Baidu Is Building Its Mobile Strategy But Says Don't Discount PC Yet | Top |
Baidu shares have fallen 18% over the last quarter as investors worry that the search giant won't be able to monetize its mobile business quickly enough to outpace domestic competitors like Qihoo 360 and Tencent Holdings. But Baidu, known as China's Google, is confident that it will be able to remake itself as a platform provider for both mobile and PC.

| Mutual Funds For Non-Profits: Bright Funds Wants To Be The Vanguard For Charitable Giving | Top |
When push-comes-to-shove, people love to donate, especially when they believe that their donation (be it money, time, food or possessions) will make a real difference. While online charity and fundraising platforms have made it easier than ever before to donate to causes, charities and non-profits, web-based philanthropy still has plenty of room for improvement. Today, donors, especially those who have grown up in the Web 2.0 Era, are frustrated by the lack of enjoyable giving experiences on the Web. Not to mention that, with the accessibility of information on the Web today, donors want more accountability in their dealings with non-profits and, in turn, are more focused on outcomes. In other words, they want to know if (and how) their donations are making an impact.
| Google Play Gets Real: Reviews Will Now Be Posted With Your Google+ Name And Picture | Top |
When you visit a review on Google Play for an app, book, song or movie, you won't have to worry as much about whether someone is sheepishly hiding behind a computer firing off nasty words, as Google has now flipped on the switch to display your Google+ name and profile picture with all reviews you add to the store. I'm not so sure this is the best thing in the world, 100%, as you don't have an option to turn it off. I like the idea of inviting people to share their thoughts, and mixing in real names and pictures if chosen by the user. That way, people know what reviews they might want to trust over other ones that are anonymous and thus, perhaps shady. The company seems to be choosing quality over quantity, though.

In the Silicon Valley Distortion Field, it can seem like everyone is learning to code -- that coding has become cool. Either way you slice it, talented programmers are in demand, and, as a result, there is now a litany of platforms and tutorials that propose to help anyone and everyone become a code-slinger, often from the comfort of their favorite sofa (and browser).

Some 17,800 Facebook users have commented on proposed changes to Facebook's governing documents, enough to trigger a vote on whether they'll go into effect. Today the Electronic Privacy Information Center asked Mark Zuckerberg to withdraw the proposal to combine user data from Facebook and Instagram and eliminate the same right to vote that users will assert in a seven-day period starting soon.
