The disaster, which comes five months after a factory fire that killed more than 100 people, could hurt Bangladesh's reputation as a source of low-cost goods and call attention to European and North American companies that buy products there. ...

First-quarter adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) edged 0.4 percent higher to 2.45 billion euros ($3.18 billion), which was slightly below the average estimate in a Reuters poll of 2.59 billion. AstraZeneca first-quarter sales tumble as generic losses bite deep

LONDON (Reuters) - AstraZeneca's sales fell by a bigger-than-expected 13 percent in the first quarter as patent expiries sent revenue from key medicines skidding lower, underscoring the turnaround challenge facing Britain's second biggest drugmaker. The group reiterated its expectation for a mid-to-high single digit percentage fall in revenue this year, with earnings declining significantly more due to increased operating costs. Sales in the quarter of $6.39 billion generated "core" earnings, which exclude certain items, down 25 percent at $1.41 a share, the company said on Thursday. ...

Firefighters and troops dug frantically through the rubble at the eight-storey Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (20 miles) outside Dhaka. Television showed young women workers, some apparently semi-conscious, being pulled out. Aging U.S. to drive up heart-related health costs: study

FDA to launch tool to detect fake, substandard malaria drugs

By Toni Clarke (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has developed a hand-held device capable of identifying counterfeit or substandard malaria drugs and has signed a letter of intent with Corning Inc to manufacture the product. The device, known as CD-3, is a battery-operated tool that uses different wavelengths of light to compare an authentic malaria drug with a potentially fake product, the FDA said on Wednesday. Malaria is a potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease that often causes fever, chills and flu-like symptoms. ...
