One factor is the rarity of a Lions' visit at a time when the world's top teams play each other on a regular basis. This year's trip to Australia is part of a 12-year cycle during which the Lions visit the three southern hemisphere giants in turn. ...

(Attention coarse language in fifth par) By Nick Mulvenney SYDNEY, May 28 (Reuters) - The difficulty of bringing together the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and turning them into successful Lions tourists is illustrated by how infrequently it has been achieved. Although every tour is different, there has developed a consensus over some of the elements that need to be in place for the tourists to have a fighting chance of success. ...

Rugby-Lions eye path to glory Down Under
Monday, May 27, 2013 11:59 PM PDT
By Nick Mulvenney SYDNEY, May 28 (Reuters) - Australia is billing the British and Irish Lions tour as "12 years in the making" but the 37 tourists know that if they return with a series win, their names will live on in rugby folklore for a lot longer than that. Some fine players have pulled on the famous red jersey and some great matches been played on the tours to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in the 16 years since Martin Johnson's side beat the Springboks 2-1 in 1997. ...

Swann takes four to bowl England towards victory
Monday, May 27, 2013 11:48 PM PDT
By Justin Palmer LEEDS, England (Reuters) - New Zealand again found Graeme Swann a difficult conundrum as the off-spinner bowled England towards another convincing victory in the second and final test on Monday. Swann confirmed he was back to his best after elbow surgery by adding four wickets to his quartet from the first innings and leave the tourists hoping for forecast rain to arrive and save them on the final day on Tuesday. Set an improbable 468 to win at Headingley, New Zealand limped to 158 for six at the close with Ross Taylor's determined 70 glueing together another fragile innings. ...

May 27 (Reuters) - Texas ace Yu Darvish struck out 14 batters but it was not enough to give the Japanese pitcher his eighth win of the season as the Rangers lost 5-4 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. With Texas leading 4-2 in the eighth inning, Didi Gregorius hit a game-tying two run home run to chase Darvish from the mound, before Cliff Pennington added the winning single for Arizona in the ninth. Both Darvish and Arizona starter Trevor Cahill took no-decisions. Cahill allowed four runs over eight innings. Arizona also beat Texas 5-3 in the opener of a doubleheader between the teams. ...

Nadal reached the second round but his 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-3 win over the inspired German, who had never won a main-draw match at Roland Garros before, was fraught with danger as the 11-times major winner flirted with the unthinkable. ...
