The U.S. Senate voted 59-38 to restore jobless benefits that expired in December for the long-term unemployed.
Six Republicans joined Democrats in voting to extend the benefits through May.
The bill's fate in the House is unclear. Speaker John Boehner says he opposes the measure because it doesn't include provisions to create more private-sector jobs.
