Reuters -  PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (Reuters) - Davis Love III had a hole-in-one and tied the course record as he took a two-shot lead in Thursday's first round of the Honda Classic while Rory McIlroy made a positive start in his bid to grab the world number one ranking. Former world number one Tiger Woods was tied in 68th place after struggling to a one-over par 71 while his playing partner, world number two Lee Westwood, was even-par. Love took advantage of more benign conditions in the morning with a six-under-par 64, including a hole-in-one on the 195-yard par-three fifth with a five iron. ...

Reuters -  (Reuters) - Lotus put their recent problems behind them with French driver Romain Grosjean setting the pace on the first day of Formula One's final pre-season test in Barcelona on Thursday. The former Renault team, who have 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen making a comeback as their main driver, had to quit the second test last week due to a chassis problem. The Malaysian-backed outfit returned to the Circuit de Catalunya with re-designed parts and plenty of mileage to make up on their rivals with the season starting in Australia on March 18. ...

US sprinter Rodgers banned nine months for doping

Reuters -  (Reuters) - U.S. sprinter Mike Rodgers has accepted a nine-month ban for a failed drug test but will still be able to compete in the London Olympics if he qualifies, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Thursday. The former American 100 metres champion, who tested positive at an event in Italy last July, will be banned through April 19, making him eligible for the U.S. Olympic trials in June if he meets testing requirements. The 26-year-old U.S. world indoor 60 metres silver medallist originally said the banned stimulant was in a drink he had at a club in Italy. ...

Barrichello set to become IndyCar rookie

Reuters - (Reuters) - Rubens Barrichello, the most experienced driver in Formula One, will become an IndyCar rookie after joining KV Racing Technology Thursday to race in the American open-wheel series. Barrichello, who spent 19 seasons in F1 and started 322 races - more than any other driver, will make his IndyCar debut on March 25 at the series opener on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida with the team's other drivers, fellow Brazilian Tony Kanaan and Venezuelan EJ Viso. Reuters - PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida (Reuters) - Ian Poulter has pulled out of this week's Honda Classic PGA Tour event after contracting pneumonia. Poulter, who had complained of suffering from a high temperature, was due to play with compatriot Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods in the first round. "Sorry guys never been so disappointed in pulling out of a tournament," Poulter wrote on his Twitter account. "Never felt so rough, hope the first reserve plays well in a great group today."
