MSNBC's Joe Scarborough Might Run for Office Again
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 04:29 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - Joe Scarborough says he might seek public office again if he sees an "absence of leadership," Parade's David Browne reports. That would be his second tour as a public servant for the MSNBC host, who was a Florida congressman in the 1990s. Scarborough says his wife won't let him reenter the "blood sport" of politics, he might have to lobby her to reconsider "if Washington continues to fumble issues." Full Story

Obama Ex-Car Czar Will Pay $10M for Pay-to-Play Scandal
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 01:55 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - Just ahead of New Years Eve (and before he's headed to the governor's mansion), New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo settled his pay-to-play suit with former "car czar" Steven Rattner. Rattner was accused of bribing a member of New York's state comptroller in exchange for the state pension fund doing business with Rattner's private equity firm, Quadrangle Group. One of those kickbacks allegedly won Quadrangle a $150 million pension fund investment. Under the terms of the announced settlement, Cuomo will pay $10 million to the state of New York, quite a bit less than the $26 million Cuomo sought. "I am gratified that we have been able to reach an agreement in this case, as it resolves the last major action of our multi-year investigation," Cuomo said. Rattner did not admit to any wrongdoing. He said, merely, "I apologize if during the course of this process there is anything I did that may have made reaching this agreement more difficult." Full Story

Skype Brings Free Video Calling to iPhone
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 01:49 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - Eons from now, historians will divide human civilization into three distinct periods: the hunter-gatherer era before the agrarian revolution of 10,000 B.C., the "Dark Ages" from then through now, and the new epoch we enter today as Skype announces its iPhone app, which will allow free video phone calls. iPhone owners can use Skype, an Internet-based free video phone service, to call other iPhone owners who have Skype. To announce its new product, Skype has produced a YouTube video of a man dancing in his underwear. Currently, tech blog aggregator site Techmeme only lists 84 tech sites and blogs covering the story, but we assume that number will skyrocket once news of The Revolution spreads throughout the world. Here's what a few of those 84 tech writers are saying. Full Story

Katsav was found guilty of raping an employee while serving as the minister of tourism in the late '90s, as well as sexually abusing another woman and harassing a third. The accusations against Katsav first surfaced in 2006, and ultimately led to his resignation. Here's a look at the early reactions to Thursday's verdict in Israel and elsewhere. Full Story

Afternoon Vid: Cenk Uygur Compares Sarah Palin to Michael Vick
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 01:11 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - By now, you may have heard that Tucker Carlson hosted a Fox News panel where he remarked that Michael Vick "should've been executed" for his involvement in a dogfighting ring. While the comment generated a significant amount of debate, no one weighed in on the statement in quite the same way MSNBC host Cenk Uygur did. In his "Psycho Talk" segment, Uygur had no problem comparing Vick's systematic and repeated torture of dogs with Sarah Palin's shooting of a caribou while hunting on her reality TV show."I know there's a difference, but is it really that large?" Uygur asks, after showing the entire clip of Palin gunning down the animal. "Sarah Palin is folksy for killing a caribou who was clearly trapped and defenseless if you watch that show, and Michael Vick should be executed? I don't think so," he confirms. There's some pretty forceful rhetoric about Christians and retribution in there, too. Have a look:[H/T: Glynnis MacNichol at Business Insider] Full Story

The Worst of the Worst: 2010's Most Dreadful Pop Culture
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 12:09 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - As every critic knows, it's important to praise, but more fun to pan. The last two weeks of 2010 have seen the customary flurry of late-December best-of lists, singling out all that was ambitious, skillful, and moving about the arts this year. However, a few critics have also taken the time to dwell on the lazy, the self-important, and the stupid. Here, the Wire presents the worst of the worst: the movies, songs, and TV shows that topped the critics' Most Terrible lists. Full Story

What Surging Commodity Prices Say About U.S. Economic Health
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 09:29 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - Commodity prices--whether copper, cotton, coffee, or corn--are booming this year. Oil has again surpassed $90 a barrel and, as Paul Krugman notes in The New York Times, global commodity prices have risen by a quarter over the last six months. That matters because commodity markets may indicate a "global recovery" and signal that we live in a "finite world," Krugman explains, "in which the rapid growth of emerging economies is placing pressure on limited supplies of raw materials, pushing up their prices."
