Instead, they've brought together a host of entrepreneurs with decades of startup experience among them to provide resources in an incubator that specifically targets early-stage mobile startups.

RealNetworks Names Former Adobe Exec Thomas Nielsen As CEO Top
RealNetworksAfter the company's former CEO Bob Kimball resigned in March of this year, RealNetworks has announced that its board of directors has named Thomas Nielsen as its new president and chief executive officer. Nielsen, who will also become a member of its Board of Directors, starts at RealNetworks on November 9th. Nielsen most recently served as vice president of the Digital Imaging Group at Adobe, leading the business unit for the company's largest product line which includes Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom, in addition to mobile, web and tablet solutions. While at the helm of Adobe's Digital Imaging Group, Nielsen was responsible for over $500 million in revenue. Prior to Adobe, Nielsen spent five years at Microsoft in the digital media space.

protectIP_rThe so-called PROTECT IP act is under fire again as it enters the process of becoming law. We've talked about it on this blog before and no doubt the discussion will continue after it passes or is rejected, but it's important at this critical moment that everyone concerned weigh in and make an unambiguous statement regarding the quality of this bill. So then: PROTECT IP is a lunatic proposal, penned by a dinosauric industry concerned solely with the preservation of its own profits. It will do nothing to curb piracy while at the same time eroding fundamental freedoms of the internet. The only people who can possibly be in favor of this bill are either ignorant of its implications or stand to gain by its passage. This desperate power grab by a diminishing elite fails to even comprehend the problems it aims to solve, and its blunt force methods are wide open for abuse, and very possibly unconstitutional. Make no mistake about it: this is a kill switch, and if it's passed, it will revisit us for years to come in ways we never suspected possible. If you think that's an overstatement, think about it again next time you're posing naked for the TSA, and ask yourself how that came about.
 
Motorola's Xoom 2 Spied In Catalog, Should Launch Before Christmas Top
xoom2We were half-expecting to see the Xoom 2 officially break cover at Motorola's Droid RAZR launch event (especially since some incriminating photos of the tab leaked just prior to it), but according to the latest Carphone Warehouse buyer's guide, the Xoom 2 should make its debut in time for the holidays. I managed to scrounge up a high resolution shot of the page in question (below), and it points out a few interesting particulars.

storiesLast year, Twitter debuted a marketing campaign, called Twitter Tales, that showcased ways in which users interact with the microblogging platform. Today, the company is launching a similar campaign, called Twitter Stories, which seems to show interesting Tweets and ways the site's users are communicating via the platform. For example, Maureen Evans uses Twitter to share recipes with users. Aaron Durand was able to save his mother's bookstore using Twitter. Well-known film critic Roger Ebert uses Twitter as voice after he lost his voice.

Support for Google+ has been added as well.

I duly wrote it up here as an "overnight must-attend" and a welcome edition to the European tech events scene. As one of the few writers to attend the first one, it was indeed a pretty damn good event, and an amazing achievement for 27 year old entrepreneur Paddy Cosgrave. And I see various others coming out with a bunch of superlatives to describe the events, which was run alongside the Dublin Web Summit. First I'll say what happened, then I'll have something to say about what I think is going on here.

DisruptTechCrunch Disrupt Beijing kicked off its second and final day with a bang last night, with Sarah Lacy chatting with Lei Jun (Angel Investor, Co-founder of Xiaomi), on how he plans to take on the likes of Apple in the mobile phone industry. Next up was Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, who talked about the photosharing startup's international efforts and how it plans to deal with the onslaught of clones. In an "Attack Of The Clones" panel, a few of Groupon's fiercest Chinese competitors discussed the daily deal space and how it is maturing in China. Additionally, a number of panelists from e-commerce companies in China ventured into what the future of online retail is in the country.
 
Google Cleans Up Gmail With New Design And Better Search Top
controlGoogle is rolling out a new design for Gmail over the next few days. It features more white space, less clutter, threaded conversations, new themes, and better search. Messages aren't as bunched up as before and easier to read. Adding a social element, Google is adding profile pictures beside each message, and the labels pop out more. The density of the text also adjusts depending on your screen size and resolution, making it easier on the eyes. The new design is in line with some of the changes Google just made to Google Reader in terms of spacing and overall feel.
 
GarageBand Arrives On The iPhone And iPod Touch Top
mzl.geivjksa.320x480-75GarageBand, Apple's music creation app, is now available on the smaller screens of the iPhone and iPod Touch, after its introduction on the iPad earlier this year. Like the iPad version, the new app has Touch instruments like keyboards, pianos, organs, drums, guitars and basses. It also allows you to plug in your electric guitar to record music or a mic to record vocals.

Trustpilot Raises $4.5m To Scale Up Trust Ratings For Shopping Top
Screen Shot 2011-11-01 at 15.52.44Trustpilot, a site which rates the trustworthiness of shopping sites via a toolbar, has raised €3.3 million from two Nordic venture funds, SEED Capital and Northzone Ventures. The money will be used to scale internationally. Right now it's available in 10 European countries but plans further rollouts.

AT&T Announces Availability And Pricing For New BlackBerry Line-Up Top
BlackBerry Bold 9900Despite RIM's successive screw-ups (including a massive server outage that left thousands of customers without BBM or internet service... twice), there are still some hardcore BlackBerry fans out there. If you're one of them, feel free to breathe a sigh of relief because the only news I bring you today is the announcement of three new BlackBerry models for AT&T: the BlackBerry Bold 9900, the BlackBerry Torch 9860, and the BlackBerry Curve 9360. Then again, it's not even noon yet.
