Did an American Consulate Employee Kill Two Men in Pakistan?

The Atlantic Wire - On Friday, Raymond Davis, an American employed at the U.S. consulate in Lahore, Pakistan, appeared in a Pakistani court on murder charges. As of now, the story of how Davis came to be in court is hotly disputed, but according to Pakistani police reports, Davis was driving through Lahore on Thursday when two men rode up on a motorcycle and attempted to rob him. Davis shot and killed both men. At some point, Davis called the U.S. consulate for help, and when a Land Cruiser from the consulate arrived on the scene to assist him, it hit and killed a third man. World Grows Jittery About American Debt

The Atlantic Wire - The U.S. received two stern warnings Thursday that it needs to get its fiscal house in order, and quickly. Moody's, the credit rating agency, cautioned that it may need to downgrade its AAA-rating of U.S. debt sooner than expected, while the International Monetary Fund argued that America must tackle its mounting debt and confront thorny issues like entitlements if it wants to maintain its credibility in global markets. Moody's AAA rating is its top designation, but the agency pointed out that the U.S. has the highest ratio of government debt to government revenue of any AAA-rated country. Full Story | Top |
AIDS-Fighting Funds Misused

The Atlantic Wire - What if all that charitable money isn't going to the right people? That's the perennial fear--and in this case, it looks to be well-founded. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was founded in 2002 by the United Nations as a portal through which donated funds, medicines and tools could be properly distributed and accounted for. According to Foreign Policy, "the Global Fund has dispersed an incredible $21.7 billion in grants since its creation, $7 billion if it donated by Washington." But such large organizations are often susceptible to cracks in accountability. Recent reports suggest that noticeably large amounts of donated funds are being misused by the countries to which they are appropriated. Full Story | Top |
