Sanibel Island has lost one of its most powerful women. Former Sanibel Island mayor and environmentalist Carla Brooks Johnston, 71, died at home with her family Thursday night after battling cancer privately for about six months.

One of Sanibel's most ardent environmental leaders, former mayor Carla Brooks Johnston, passed away on Thursday evening at her home following a brief but courageous battle against cancer. She was 71.
