Doctors split on vaccine strategy to shield babies

Reuters - NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A large group of U.S. doctors on Monday gave the green light for pediatricians to offer vaccines to close family members of babies who are too young to get shots themselves. The strategy, known as cocooning, is meant to block diseases from reaching the infant in the first place and is backed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But earlier this month, Canadian government researchers suggested that at least for whooping cough, a major infectious disease worldwide, cocooning comes with a hefty price tag. ... Full Story

Holiday recalls hit snack makers, alfalfa producer

Reuters - (Reuters) - Two U.S. food makers have voluntarily recalled snacks contaminated by peanuts, while another firm increased its recall of alfalfa products due to salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration said on Sunday. Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Eillien's Candies, Inc. recalled its Yogurt Raisins, Granola Mix and Cinnamon Granola Mix products while Maribel's Sweets Inc of New York recalled its New York Handbag Collection chocolates because the products may contain undeclared peanuts, the FDA said. ... Mead Johnson says retesting shows Enfamil is safe

Reuters - (Reuters) - Mead Johnson said on Sunday that a new round of testing of samples of its Enfamil baby formula, under investigation by health officials, showed that the product was safe. The company said in a statement that it had retested samples from a batch of Enfamil premium newborn powdered formula and found no presence of Cronobacter, a bacterium that has sometimes been linked to rare illnesses in newborns. Enfamil was pulled off shelves at WalMart last week after the death of an infant in Missouri, who had been fed the formula and tested positive for Cronobacter. ... Full Story

UK's ailing Prince Philip misses royal Christmas

The French government urged 30,000 women in France to seek removal of the implants, made by now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), because of the danger they could rupture and cause inflammation and irritation. UK's Prince Philip has heart operation: palace

Reuters - LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, had an operation to relieve a blocked artery in his heart on Friday after being rushed to hospital with chest pains, Buckingham Palace said. "The Duke of Edinburgh was found to have a blocked coronary artery which caused his chest pains," the palace said in a statement. "This was treated successfully by the minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting." A stent is a small tube inserted into a blood vessel to keep it open and avoid blockages. ... Full Story

Baby formula probe widens beyond Enfamil

Reuters - (Reuters) - U.S. health regulators said on Friday they are looking at several types of baby formula that could be linked to the death of an infant, expanding an investigation beyond Mead Johnson's market-leading Enfamil. An official from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the baby, 10-day-old Avery Cornett of Lebanon, Missouri, had consumed a variety of baby formulas before his death but declined to give more details. French breast implant boss wanted by Interpol

Reuters - PARIS (Reuters) - The founder of a French firm at the centre of a global breast implants scare is wanted by Costa Rica, according to a notice posted on the website of the international police agency Interpol. Jean-Claude Mas, who started the now defunct Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) in 1991, has disappeared from public view as anxiety about the potential health effects of his implant products has spread around the globe.
