The Raspberry Pi mini computer that's become popular with the maker community but was originally conceived as a device to help kids learn how to code has had the lightweight TinyBASIC programming language ported to it -- as a way for parents who haven't done any programming since their school days to be able to share their old BASIC knowledge with their kids
iJento Raises $8M From MMC Ventures, Nauta Capital, Oxford Capital Partners For Its Customer Intelligence Platform | Top |
iJento, a provider of digital and multichannel customer intelligence for businesses who want to improve their customer targeting, has raised a new $8 million round of funding, led by MMC Ventures. Previous investors, Nauta Capital, and Oxford Partners also participated in what is for them effectively a follow-on round. The new funds will be used to "fuel growth" and support its recent U.S. launch, and maintain what the company claims is a market leadership position. (Well, they would say that, wouldn't they.)
Major Wireless Carriers Hunker Down For Hurricane Sandy | Top |
Hurricane Sandy, what may essentially be the biggest storm to hit the North Eastern seaboard in history, is barreling toward us, through the Atlantic, at this very second. It's estimated to cause between $2.5 and $3 billion in wind damage alone, and has already claimed dozens of lives on its way to the States. To that extent, the nation's major wireless carriers want you to know they're ready to roll. Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have all sent out press releases explaining that they're in full preparation mode for Sandy's arrival. AT&T has made no such announcement.

IMI.VC, a startup investment firm based in Moscow, just announced that it has raised $75 million in funding. Vinchel sits on the IMI.VC board, and his Mail.ru co-founder Gregory Finger has been named chairman.
Three Months After The First Teaser, FreedomPop Begins Shipping Its $99 WiMAX-Friendly iPod Touch Cases | Top |
Freemium wireless Internet startup FreedomPop made good on its word by kicking off its public beta earlier this month and hocking USB modems and mobile hotspots, but that launch left many of its would-be users asking one question: Where are the iPhone and iPod touch cases the company unveiled all those months ago? Well, that wait is over… for some people, anyway. FreedomPop has just announced that its WiMAX-capable iPod touch cases are now shipping, and will set potential users back a cool $99 should they decide to take the plunge.

Y Combinator Of Education Imagine K12 Launches Its 3rd Cohort, Bringing The Digital Revolution To Classrooms Near You | Top |
There's a lot of opportunity -- and big problems to solve -- in the current educational landscape. But it's not an easy road, and, for entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses in need of mentoring, seed capital, and business development guidance as they tackle those problems, the options are limited. That's why, after encouragement from Y Combinator founder Paul Graham, former Yahoo and Google execs Tim Brady, Alan Louie and Geoff Ralston founded in Imagine K12 in 2011. On Friday, the accelerator launched it's third cohort of edtech startups, here's a look at the graduates -- and at the road Imagine K12 has followed since.

There's no word what's to come of the 8GB model although early speculation stated that it could drop in price by as much as $100. Google was supposed to have a big Android event today in NYC. Skyscanner Releases Windows 8 App, Plans 100 New Jobs In Its Scotland HQ | Top |
Last month Skyscanner, which competes with Kayak on flight, hotel and car hire bookings, hit a nice milestetone with 11 million downloads of its free native mobile apps. Today it's adding to that with a Windows 8 version. The free app is available through the Windows Store and is - the company claims - the first app with built in free-text search. That means users can enter "Flights to Berlin next Tuesday, back a week later", rather than completing several data fields, to search for flights. Users can also pin and track flight searches to their Windows desktop through live tiles. Skyscanner's app also runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.

As Google And Amazon Fight Up, Apple Refuses To Fight Down | Top |
After this past week's Apple event, one thing stood out to me above all others. And just to make sure, I watched the event again. Same result. The shots fired at Android tablets. For everything that Apple announced (new MacBook Pros, Mac minis, iMacs, iPads, and iPad minis), this was what I walked away thinking about. It was a fascinating look into the collective mind of Apple.
Why The Future Of Search May Look More Like Yahoo Than Google | Top |
Rewind to the late 90s. Almost everything you needed – email, news, sports, stocks, maps and more – was conveniently on one site: Yahoo!. Yahoo! was the "portal" to the Internet that strived to deliver everything you could ever want on its own properties. The crazy thing is how successful Yahoo! was at this. Few, if any, have ever done content or media online at that scale.
NYSE And NASDAQ To Close Down On Monday And Possibly Tuesday Due To Hurricane Sandy | Top |
According to Reuters, the U.S. Stock Market will be closed on Monday due to interference that will be caused by the logistical nightmare that comes along with such a huge weather event like Hurricane Sandy. Parts of New York City have already been evacuated. As early as six hours ago, it was said that the NYSE would not be closing down, but that decision has apparently been reversed as the severity of the storm has picked up.
