South Carolina officials are removing the Confederate battle flag from the State House grounds in Columbia after it flew there for 54 years.
Culminating years of opposition that swelled after last month's massacre of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, one of the state's most prominent African-American officials was to lower the banner from a pole next to a soldiers' monument around 10 a.m. ET.
From there, in a fate lawmakers decided this week after hours of contentious debate, the flag will go about a mile down the road to a state military museum.
