Muhsin al-Fadhli, the longtime al Qaeda operative and leader of the Khorasan Group, was killed in a military strike on July 8 in Syria, the Pentagon says.
Al-Fadhli's death will "degrade and disrupt ongoing external operations of al Qaeda against the United States," Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said.
In September, officials said the group was plotting against a U.S. homeland target and Western targets. There were also indications the militants had obtained materials and were working on explosive devices that would be hard to detect, including common hand-held electronic devices and airplane carry-on items such as toiletries.
