The White House agreed to House Speaker John Boehner's request that President Barack Obama give his scheduled special address to a joint session of Congress on September 8 instead of September 7.
A political showdown erupted earlier in the day over Obama's request to deliver the address on the economy on September 7. That was also the night of a GOP presidential debate. The speech will now take place on the opening night of the National Football League season.
In a letter to Obama, Boehner noted that the White House requested the use of the House chamber for an 8 p.m. address -- less than two hours after the House is scheduled to complete legislative business. Security sweeps of the chamber usually take more than three hours, he said.
