President Obama will make a statement on Tropical Storm Irene at 5 p.m. ET, the White House said.
Irene has lashed some of the biggest cities in the Northeast with wind gusts and torrential rains.
Officials said the storm had knocked out power to more than 4 million people and was responsible for at least 15 deaths in six states.
