Royal wedding to be held in May

Meghan Markle intends to become a UK citizen, the British royal family has announced, confirming that her marriage to Prince Harry would take place at Windsor Castle in May next year.

Kensington Palace said that Windsor, a royal residence west of London, had become "a special place for the two of them."

A spokesman said Markle would retain US citizenship through the process of becoming a UK citizen but it was "too early to say" if she would retain dual nationality. The process is expected to take several years.

News Alert: Budget plan would hit the poor

Poor Americans would lose billions of dollars worth of federal benefits under the Senate GOP tax bill, according to a new Congressional Budget Office report.

This is largely because the legislation would eliminate the individual mandate, which requires nearly all Americans to get health insurance or pay a penalty. This would result in 13 million fewer people having coverage in 2027, the CBO found.

Many of the folks who would forgo coverage would have lower or moderate incomes and would have qualified for Medicaid or federal help paying their premiums or out-of-pocket health expenses, CBO found.

News Alert: Rep. Conyers steps down from House Judiciary post

Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has stepped down as ranking member of House Judiciary Committee amid a congressional investigation into sexual harassment and workplace abuse allegations by his former staffers.

"After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters," Conyers said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

"I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger," the statement continued. "I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics."

News Alert: Scores killed at Egypt mosque

At least 235 people were killed and another 109 injured in an attack on a mosque in Egypt's North Sinai region on Friday, Egyptian state-run Nile TV reported, making it one of the deadliest attacks ever carried out against civilians in the province.

After at least two explosions, gunmen who were waiting outside the mosque opened fire at worshipers as they fled Friday prayers, state-owned Ahram Online said.

Breaking News

A high court in South Africa increased Oscar Pistorius' prison sentence to 13 years and five months for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal issued the ruling after the prosecution appealed his previous sentence of six years as too lenient.

The former Olympic and Paralympic sprinter killed Steenkamp at his home in an upscale Pretoria neighborhood in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013 -- an act he says was an accident after he mistook her for an intruder. The prosecution called it a deliberate act after the two had an argument.

A noise detected near the last known location of a missing Argentine submarine with 44 crew aboard was consistent with an explosion, the Argentine Navy said Thursday.

A dozen nations have been searching by air and sea for the ARA San Juan, which was last contacted off the coast of Argentina on November 15.

News Alert: Zimbabwe's President Mugabe resigns

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, the speaker of the country's Parliament said, bringing an end to his 37 years of rule.

The announcement came as Parliament began proceedings to impeach him, six days after the military seized control in the capital, Harare, and placed the 93-year-old leader under house arrest.

Crowds in the streets of Harare broke out in rapturous celebrations, raising their fists and waving Zimbabweans flags to mark the historic moment.

Mugabe's resignation marks the end of an era in Zimbabwe. He ruled the country with an iron fist for almost four decades and is the only leader the nation has known since it achieved independence from Britain in 1980.

News Alert: DOJ sues to block AT&T-Time Warner deal

The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit to block AT&T's takeover of Time Warner, the parent company of CNN.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, DC, on Monday, is an unusual challenge to the $85 billion deal, which was announced by the two companies more than a year ago. AT&T says it will fight the case in court.

In the suit, the DOJ argues that the deal violates antitrust law because AT&T would likely "use its control of Time Warner's popular programming as a weapon to harm competition."

News Alert: Trump names North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism

President Donald Trump, in the latest demonstration of increased tensions on the Korean Peninsula, placed North Korea back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Trump announced the move Monday during a public meeting with his Cabinet at the White House and said the Treasury Department will announce new sanctions against North Korea on Tuesday.

"Should have happened a long time ago," Trump said.

North Korea was removed from the list by President George W. Bush in 2008.

A total of 210,000 gallons of oil leaked Thursday from the Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota, the pipeline's operator, TransCanada, said.

Crews shut down the pipeline Thursday morning, and officials are investigating the cause of the leak.

This is the largest Keystone oil spill to date in South Dakota, said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the state's Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

First on CNN: New George H.W. Bush accuser

Former President George H.W. Bush is facing new allegations from a Michigan woman who said he touched her inappropriately while he was in office at an event in April 1992.

The woman, now 55, spoke exclusively with CNN and said she was attending a fundraiser for Bush's re-election campaign in Dearborn, Michigan, with her father when the president grabbed her rear end during a photo-op.

"We got closer together for a family photo and it was like 'Holy crap!'" she said, describing the moment Bush touched her buttocks. "It was like a gentle squeeze."

Her story -- remarkably similar to the accounts shared by at least six other women who said the former president groped them during photo-ops between 2003 and 2016 -- is significant, because it is the first time a woman has come forward to accuse Bush of unwanted touching while he was in office.

News Alert: Mistrial in Sen. Menendez corruption trial

The federal corruption trial of New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez ended in a mistrial Thursday after the jury reported it is hopelessly deadlocked.

Judge William Walls declared the mistrial after interviewing all 12 jurors Thursday.

"I find that you are unable to reach a verdict and that further deliberations would be futile and there is no alternative but to declare a mistrial," he said.

The mistrial is a blow to the Justice Department, which has been investigating Menendez for nearly five years, but leaves the senator without the clear vindication he had hoped for in court.

News Alert: Body of California shooter's wife found under floor at home

Kevin Neal's deadly shooting rampage in Northern California may have been prompted by the fatal shooting of his wife, Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said Wednesday.

Neal, identified as the gunman who killed four people in a string of shootings Tuesday, shot and killed his wife the previous night and concealed her body under a floor in his home, the assistant sheriff said. The discovery of his wife's body brought the death toll to five.

"We believe that's probably what started this whole event," Johnston said of the wife's shooting.

News Alert: Sexual harassment on Capitol Hill

Be extra careful of the male lawmakers who sleep in their offices -- they can be trouble. Avoid finding yourself alone with a congressman or senator in elevators, late-night meetings or events where alcohol is flowing. And think twice before speaking out about sexual harassment from a boss -- it could cost you your career.

These are a few of the unwritten rules that some female lawmakers, staff and interns say they follow on Capitol Hill, where they say harassment and coercion is pervasive on both sides of the rotunda.

There is also the "creep list" -- an informal roster passed along by word-of-mouth, consisting of the male members most notorious for inappropriate behavior, ranging from making sexually suggestive comments or gestures to seeking physical relations with younger employees and interns.

CNN spoke with more than 50 lawmakers, current and former Hill aides and political veterans who have worked in Congress, the majority of whom spoke anonymously to be candid and avoid potential repercussions. With few exceptions, every person said they have personally experienced sexual harassment on the Hill or know of others who have.

News Alert: DOJ will consider new special counsel

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked senior federal prosecutors to "evaluate certain issues" presented by House Republicans, including alleged ties between the Clinton Foundation and the sale of Uranium One.

The Obama-era sale of the Canadian uranium mining company to Russia's Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom, is already being investigated by House Republicans. The deal was approved in 2010, when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. Although the claims have not been proven, some Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have alleged that Russian interests sought to donate to the Clinton Foundation to persuade Clinton to support the deal.

In a letter to House judiciary committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, assistant attorney general Stephen Boyd said the senior prosecutors will make recommendations to the attorney general and deputy general on whether "any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources, or whether any merit the appointment of a special counsel."

Louis C.K. says 'These stories are true'

Comedian Louis C.K. has said the sexual misconduct allegations levied against him are true. He issued a statement Friday, a day after a bombshell report by The New York Times cited five women who said the comedian engaged in sexual misconduct, including masturbating in front of them.

"The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly." C.K. went on to say that he is "remorseful" and has "tried to learn" from his irresponsible behavior.
