News Alert: Health Secretary Tom Price is out

President Donald Trump accepted the resignation of Tom Price, the embattled health and human services secretary, on Friday in the midst of a scandal over his use of private planes.

Price's departure came as he's being investigated by the department's inspector general for using private jets for multiple government business trips, even for distances as short as Washington to Philadelphia.

News Alert: Sonic attacks prompt US to slash diplomats in Cuba

The US State Department is pulling out all families of employees and nonessential personnel from Cuba, after a string of mysterious sonic attacks against US diplomats, according to two US officials.

The American Embassy will continue to operate with a reduced staff. The sources said the US will stop issuing visas in Cuba effective immediately.

The decision came after an exhaustive review of US diplomats' safety in Havana and discussions with the Cuban government, which has vociferously denied any involvement in the attacks.

Exclusive: Russia's election meddling

A social media campaign calling itself "Blacktivist" and linked to the Russian government used both Facebook and Twitter in an apparent attempt to amplify racial tensions during the US presidential election, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN. The accounts are part of a cache being handed over to Congress in the coming days.

Both "Blacktivist" accounts regularly shared content intended to stoke outrage. "Black people should wake up as soon as possible," one post on the Twitter account read. "Black families are divided and destroyed by mass incarceration and death of black men," another read. The accounts also posted videos of police violence against African Americans.

The "Blacktivist" accounts provide further evidence that Russian-backed social media accounts saw racial tensions as something to be exploited to achieve the broader Russian goal of dividing Americans and creating chaos in US politics during a campaign in which race repeatedly became an issue.

Exclusive: Kushner didn't disclose personal email account

White House senior adviser and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner did not share the existence of his personal email account, which he has used for official business, in his closed interview with the staff of the Senate intelligence committee, CNN has learned.

CNN has also learned that the chair and vice chair of the committee were so unhappy that they learned about the existence of his personal email account via news reports that they wrote him a letter via his attorney Thursday instructing him to double-check that he has turned over every relevant document to the committee including those from his "'personal email account' described to the news media, as well as all other email accounts, messaging apps, or similar communications channels you may have used, or that may contain information relevant to our inquiry."

News Alert: Hurricane Maria makes landfall in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria made landfall Wednesday morning as a strong Category 4 storm in southeast Puerto Rico, near the city of Yabucoa, the National Hurricane Center said.

At landfall, Maria had sustained winds of 155 mph, just 2 mph short of Category 5 status. It was the first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932. The island's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, called Maria an "unprecedented" atmospheric system. He said more than 10,000 people had take refuge in shelters.

News Alert: Trump warns US could 'destroy' North Korea

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that the US would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.

"The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea," Trump said during his first address to the UN General Assembly.

The President also suggested he plans to scrap the Iran nuclear deal, calling it an "embarrassment to the US" and saying it was a mistake to enter into the agreement at all. And Trump stated bluntly that certain parts of the world are "going to hell," suggesting it was within the UN's power to reverse course.

Maria is Category 5

A "potentially catastrophic" Hurricane Maria is now a Category 5 storm, packing 160 miles per hour winds as the eye nears Dominica and the storm takes aim at the US territory of Puerto Rico.

"The extremely dangerous core of Maria is expected to pass over Dominica within the next hour or two," the National Hurricane Center said in its 8 p.m. ET advisory. "Maria is likely to affect Puerto Rico as an extremely dangerous major hurricane, and a hurricane warning has been issued for that island."

The core of Maria is forecast to approach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands Tuesday night and Wednesday. The region still is recovering from Hurricane Irma.

"We want to alert the people of Puerto Rico that this is not an event like we've ever seen before," Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told reporters Monday.

"This is an event that will be damaging to the infrastructure, that will be catastrophic, and our main focus -- our only focus right now -- should be to make sure we save lives."

He added that Maria's size means all of Puerto Rico will experience hurricane conditions.

---

Another hurricane, Jose, is churning off the coast of North Carolina. Forecasters don't expect it to make landfall in the US, but it’s causing "dangerous surf and rip currents" along the East Coast, the hurricane center said.

CNN Exclusive

US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election, sources tell CNN, an extraordinary step involving a high-ranking campaign official now at the center of the Russia meddling probe.

The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.

Some of the intelligence collected includes communications that sparked concerns among investigators that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign, according to three sources familiar with the investigation. Two of these sources, however, cautioned that the evidence is not conclusive.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which is leading the investigation into Russia's involvement in the election, has been provided details of these communications.

News Alert: Rouhani says US will pay a high price if it scraps nuclear deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said America will pay a high price if President Donald Trump makes good on his threats to scrap the Iran nuclear deal.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour in New York, Rouhani said: "Exiting such an agreement would carry a high cost for the United States of America, and I do not believe Americans would be willing to pay such a high cost for something that will be useless for them."

Rouhani said such an action by the Trump administration "will yield no results for the United States but at the same time it will generally decrease and cut away and chip away at international trust placed in the Unites States of America."

TV's big night

The Emmy Awards cast President Donald Trump in a key supporting role, and the president's preferred medium provided fertile terrain for satirizing and commenting upon the political moment, a mood that permeated everything from host Stephen Colbert's monologue to the diverse winners and onstage banter.

Colbert -- a beneficiary of anti-Trump sentiment with the surge in ratings for his "Late Show" -- made Trump a centerpiece of his opening material and song. Indeed, he blamed Emmy voters for depriving Trump of an award during his "Apprentice" days that might have kept him out of politics, saying, "I thought you people liked morally compromised antiheroes," later adding, "Unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the winner of the popular vote."

Still, those not-entirely-unexpected gags (Colbert joked about having the "courage" to lampoon Trump in a room whose politics tilt heavily left), and a genuinely surprising appearance by former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, were only the tip of the iceberg. The president's presence hovered throughout the evening, beginning with "Saturday Night Live's" strong showing, honoring Alec Baldwin -- who played Trump on the show -- and Kate McKinnon, who thanked her alter ego, Hillary Clinton, for her grace.

"At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy," Baldwin quipped in his acceptance speech.

Trump-themed barbs came from various directions, including a reunion of "Nine to Five" stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton, who spoke of giving a bigot his comeuppance then and now; and "Veep's" Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who dryly suggested an impeachment storyline was jettisoned because the writers feared someone else might beat the HBO comedy to the punch. Even John Lithgow's praise of Winston Churchill, who he played in "The Crown," had a political tinge to it.

The Emmys also featured a seemingly effortless display of diversity, in a way the Oscars might envy. That aspect of television was celebrated both in a video package and on an impromptu basis by Donald Glover's dual wins for "Atlanta," Sterling K. Brown for "This is Us," and Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe claiming the writing award -- Waithe being the first African-American woman to receive that prize.

Additional context applied to the strong showings by "Big Little Lies," which dealt with domestic abuse; and "The Handmaid's Tale," an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel that many saw as a perfectly timed drama when women's issues and abortion rights remain heated topics.

Breaking News

London's Metropolitan Police are investigating a Tube incident which has shut down part of a busy London Underground line as terrorism.

It's not yet clear what caused the security alert, which occurred at about 8:20 a.m. local time (3:20 a.m. ET) at the height of rush hour on a busy commuter line into central London.

But witnesses tell CNN they heard announcements from officials that "some kind of explosion" had occurred on a train at Parsons Green Tube station.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for counterterroism policing, has declared it a terrorist incident, the Met Police said in a statement.

News Alert: North Korea fires missile

North Korea fired a missile from near Pyongyang that flew over Japan and toward the Pacific Ocean, South Korea said Friday.

Japan's public broadcaster NHK said "the government is advising people to stay away from anything that could be missile debris."

Citing the Japanese government, NHK added that the missile landed in the ocean about 1,240 miles off the cape of Erimo in Hokkaido at around 7:16 a.m. local time.

The launch comes just hours after the rogue nation threatened to "sink" Japan and reduce the US mainland into "ash and darkness" in North Korean state media. The threat came in response to the United Nations Security Council's unanimous approval of additional sanctions on North Korea.

News Alert

President Donald Trump pushed back against claims by top congressional Democrats that a deal has been reached over legislation to protect hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants and that a border-security package would not include a wall along the US-Mexico border.

"No deal was made last night on DACA," Trump tweeted. "Massive border security would have to be agreed to in exchange for consent. Would be subject to vote."

Late Wednesday, Democratic leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi said they had "agreed to enshrine the protections of (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program) into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that's acceptable to both sides."

But Trump also refuted that specific assertion by the Democratic leaders about a border wall, tweeting, "The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built."

DACA deal

Democratic leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi said following a meeting with President Donald Trump that they have "agreed" to a fix on DACA and resolved iron out a border-security plan -- "excluding" the US-Mexico border wall that was one of Trump's most memorable campaign promises.

In an optimistic statement following the White House meeting, Schumer and Pelosi said the parties had "agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that's acceptable to both sides."

"We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President," they said.

But White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back on that assessment: "While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to."

It was not immediately clear what exactly was agreed to on Wednesday night, besides the details included in the Democrats' initial statement.

CNN's interview with Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton told CNN on Wednesday that it is time to abolish the Electoral College, part of a sweeping interview where the former Democratic nominee sought to explain why she lost the 2016 election.

Clinton, in the interview with Anderson Cooper, displayed her animus for fired FBI Director James Comey, reflected on her love for the people -- namely former President Bill Clinton -- who helped her get through the crushing loss and blasted the arcane election body that she believes helped Donald Trump win the presidency.

"I think it needs to be eliminated," Clinton said of the Electoral College. "I'd like to see us move beyond it, yes."

Exclusive: Russia investigation

Former national security adviser Susan Rice privately told House investigators that she unmasked the identities of senior Trump officials to understand why the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates was in New York late last year, multiple sources told CNN.

The New York meeting preceded a separate effort by the UAE to facilitate a back-channel communication between Russia and the incoming Trump White House.

Her explanation appears to have satisfied some influential Republicans on the committee and raises new questions about whether any Trump associates tried to arrange back-channel discussions with the Russians.

Apple introduces $999 iPhone X

Ten years after the launch of the first iPhone, Apple has revealed the anniversary edition iPhone X.

The company on Tuesday also unveiled the iPhone 8 and bigger iPhone 8 Plus, and a new cellular Apple Watch.

The new iPhone X kills the home button to make space for a larger screen. The loss of the home button means no more fingerprint sensor. To unlock the phone, you use your face with a new technology called Face ID.

It also has an edge-to-edge display, glass on the front and back, and a surgical-grade stainless steel band around the edges. The 5.8-inch OLED display packs 458 pixels per inch.

The iPhone X will start at $999 and start shipping November 3.

The iPhone 8 devices are faster, sturdier and better at snapping photos. They also feature Qi-based wireless charging, which Apple thinks will be available at coffee shops, stores and airports around the world in the near future.

The iPhone 8 will start at $699 and the iPhone 8 Plus is $799 for 64 GB models. Pre-orders start Friday.

The waterproof Apple Watch has an even greater focus on fitness and health. For example, it flags users when it detects an elevated pulse.

News Alert: UN passes fresh sanctions on North Korea

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea -- a move that comes just one week after the rogue nation carried out its sixth and largest nuclear test.

The resolution is designed to accomplish six major goals: cap North Korea's oil imports, ban textile exports, end additional overseas laborer contracts, suppress smuggling efforts, stop joint ventures with other nations and sanction designated North Korean government entities, according to a US official familiar with negotiations.

"These are by far the strongest measures ever imposed on North Korea," US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said following the vote. "They give us a much better chance to halt the regime's ability to fuel and finance its nuclear and missile programs, but we all know these steps only work if all nations implement them completely and aggressively."

The US first circulated a draft resolution that called for a full ban on exports of oil to North Korea and an asset freeze on leader Kim Jong Un, the Worker's Party and the government of North Korea.

But later, the US put forward another draft that removed the full oil embargo, asset freeze, travel ban for Kim and softened the language on foreign workers and other issues.

Ahead of the vote, North Korea warned the United States that it would pay a "due price" if harsh sanctions were passed by the Security Council.

Irma's path of destruction

Irma's downgrade from a hurricane to a tropical storm Monday did nothing to quell the threat of more destruction in the coming hours.

The storm, packing 65 mph winds, is moving into Georgia and the state’s entire coast is under a storm surge warning.

Irma has left 6.2 million customers in Florida without power – including most of Miami. In addition, Jacksonville is seeing a historic level of flooding.

Irma made landfall Sunday on the Florida Keys, but the extent of devastation there is still not clear because officials say many of the islands are currently inaccessible.

News Alert: Epic Hurricane Irma spins north

Hurricane Irma was climbing Florida's west coast toward Tampa late Sunday after making a second landfall in the afternoon as a Category 3 storm in Marco Island. Just to the north of Marco Island in the city of Naples, a dangerous storm surge of ocean water sent levels rising about 9 feet in three hours.

Now a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph,  Hurricane Irma is about 70 miles southeast of Tampa, Florida, moving north at 14 mph and is expected to stay at hurricane strength at least into Monday morning.

Even with the storm a few hours away, transformers were blowing in Orlando. More than 3 million customers are without power across the state of Florida, according to utilities.

The cyclone spawned tornadoes in parts of Florida in the morning and afternoon and could produce more. This is typical of hurricanes that get enough of their circulation over land.

Irma is the strongest Atlantic basin hurricane ever and has already broken several records. Follow the storm's track here.

Hurricane Irma closes in on Florida

Hurricane Irma's northern eyewall has reached the lower Florida Keys, according to the National Hurricane Center.  The eye of the Category 4 storm is just 15 miles from Key West.

Wind gusts on Key West are up to nearly 90 mph, the National Hurricane Center said, and more than 400,000 people are without power in South Florida.

Irma is expected to track along Florida's western coast, clipping Naples and Fort Myers before making its way to Tampa.

Hurricane Irma

Time is running out to evacuate and prepare for Hurricane Irma, officials warned as violent winds and rains from the Category 3 storm began pounding the southern tip of Florida.

The first hurricane-force wind gust of 74 mph was recorded in Key West, the National Weather Service says.

Irma's powerful winds and outer rain bands lashed the Florida Keys as the massive storm slowly began turning from Cuba's northern coast up into the Florida Strait, the National Hurricane Center says.

With maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, Irma is expected to strengthen once it moves away from Cuba, with the possibility of hitting the US mainland as a Category 4.

Irma's eye is expected to be near the Florida Keys Sunday morning before driving up the state's southwestern coast in the afternoon, according to the hurricane center.

News Alert: Police report contradicts Paterno claim

A police report obtained by CNN bolsters evidence that legendary football coach Joe Paterno knew years before Jerry Sandusky's arrest that his longtime assistant might be sexually abusing children.

The one-page Pennsylvania state police report, obtained from a source and described here for the first time, lays out an account from whistleblower Mike McQueary, who reported to Paterno an incident he had just witnessed in a locker room between Sandusky and a young boy. Paterno allegedly told McQueary in 2001 that the claim against Sandusky "was the second complaint of this nature he had received," according to the police report, which was written after Sandusky's arrest 10 years later.

McQueary's claim of abuse and other allegations led to Sandusky's conviction in 2012 for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, including three victims after the 2001 locker room incident. He is serving a sentence of at least 30 years in prison. An appeal is pending.

The police report casts fresh doubt on the mountain of denials by Paterno, his family and his loyalists that the coach knew anything of Sandusky's serial molestation before the 2001 incident.

Around the time presidential candidate Donald Trump was touting his real estate dealings at a Republican primary debate, a proposal was in the works to build a Trump Tower in Russia that would have given his company a $4 million upfront fee, no upfront costs, a percentage of the sales, and control over marketing and design. And that's not all: the deal included the opportunity to name the hotel spa after his daughter Ivanka.

An internal Trump Organization document from October 2015, obtained by CNN on Thursday, reveals the details of a 17-page letter of intent that set the stage for Trump's attorney to negotiate a promising branding venture for Trump condominiums, a hotel and commercial property in the heart of Moscow. Trump signed the document later that month, according to Michael Cohen, his corporate attorney at the time. The document CNN obtained does not have Trump's signature because it is a copy of the deal that Cohen brought to Trump to sign.

Cohen pulled out of the arrangement three months later as the project failed to get off the ground.

News Alert: House passes hurricane aid, debt ceiling

The House approved a package of bills that ties emergency funding for hurricane relief with measures that would raise the debt ceiling and keep the government open for three months.

The bill, which passed 316-90 and was part of a deal struck between President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders, now goes to the White House for the President's signature. The 90 lawmakers who opposed the bill were all Republicans, who had just come out of a meeting with top administration officials urging them to support the package. The Senate passed the legislation Thursday.

Trump, in a surprising move, signed onto the package Wednesday, siding with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, who proposed bundling the bills together but only with a three-month extension for the debt ceiling, essentially punting the issue until December.

Republican leaders had sought a debt limit increase for as long as 18 months.

News Alert: Bracing for a direct hit

Conditions in the Turks and Caicos deteriorated Thursday as deadly and massive Hurricane Irma moved in on the islands -- and continued tracking toward South Florida where it could slam Miami this weekend.

"It has become more likely that Irma will make landfall in southern Florida as a dangerous major hurricane," the National Hurricane Center said.

Irma -- a Category 5 storm churning in the Atlantic with 175 mph sustained winds -- killed at least six people a day earlier as it devastated small northeastern Caribbean islands and left hundreds of thousands in Puerto Rico without power.

Here are the latest developments

-- Irma was about 40 miles south of Grand Turk Island around 5 p.m. ET. The storm could cross the Bahamas later Thursday evening.

-- A new Irma forecast puts Miami in line for a direct hit.

-- Mandatory evacuations are in place for parts of Florida and are expected to expand. Georgia and South Carolina have issued mandatory evacuation orders that will begin Saturday.

-- 40% of gas stations in Miami-Fort Lauderdale are out of gas. Fuel trucks are getting state police escorts to gas stations to address the shortages.

-- Jose, now a Category 3 storm, became the third major hurricane of the Atlantic basin season.

If you're near Irma's path, here's a checklist to help you prepare. You can continue to track the storm here

News Alert: Massive data breach at Equifax

The credit reporting firm Equifax says a giant cybersecurity breach compromised the personal information of as many as 143 million Americans — almost half the country.

Cyber criminals have accessed sensitive information -- including names, social security numbers, birth dates, addresses and the numbers of some driver's licenses.

Additionally, Equifax said that credit card numbers for about 209,000 US customers were exposed, as was "personal identifying information" on roughly 182,000 US customers involved in credit report disputes. Residents in the UK and Canada were also impacted.

The breach occurred between mid-May and July, Equifax said. The company said it discovered the hack on July 29.

Exclusive: Mueller seeks interviews with White House staff

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team has approached the White House about interviewing staffers who were aboard Air Force One when the initial misleading statement about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower was crafted, three sources familiar with the conversations said.

The special counsel's discussions with the White House are the latest indication that Mueller's investigators are interested in the response to the Trump Tower meeting. Mueller wants to know how the statement aboard Air Force One was put together, whether information was intentionally left out and who was involved, two of the sources said.

Mueller's questions could go to the issue of intent and possible efforts to conceal information during an obstruction of justice investigation. The answers to Mueller's questions also could illuminate the level of anxiety surrounding the meeting and the decision-making that followed.

At this time, Mueller has not asked to interview President Trump.

News Alert

Hurricane Irma hammered a string of northeast Caribbean islands, thrashing them with rain and winds of up to 180 mph, and leaving at least nine people dead.

The hurricane battered several islands, including Barbuda, St. Martin and the British Virgin Islands. Its howling winds tore leaves from palm trees, ripped off roofs and windows from buildings, and slammed tall waves into hotels.

The eye of one of the strongest storms recorded in the Atlantic is making its way toward a possibly devastating hit on Florida over the weekend. The National Hurricane Center described Irma as "extremely dangerous."

News Alert: Irma's destruction

Hurricane Irma wreaked widespread devastation across islands in the Caribbean Wednesday. The Category 5 storm, the highest possible on the hurricane scale, has maintained intensity above 180 mph longer than any storm in Atlantic basin history

Here are the latest developments

-- At least three people are dead.

-- "Upwards of 90%" of Barbuda is destroyed, an official said.

-- Puerto Rico's governor says the island has seen significant damage.

-- It's too early to tell whether Irma will hit the US mainland, but forecasts show it could churn near Florida on Sunday. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in some parts of the state.

-- Meanwhile, Jose, in the open Atlantic far to the southeast of Irma, and Katia, in the Gulf of Mexico, also became hurricanes.

Follow the path of the storm here.

Clinton's new memoir

A raw and aggrieved Hillary Clinton takes ownership -- to a degree -- for her stunning 2016 loss to Donald Trump in her upcoming book, which offers a revealing look at the campaign through the eyes of the contest's loser.

CNN purchased the book -- "What Happened" (Simon & Schuster, 494 pages) -- from a Jacksonville, Florida, bookstore a week before its widespread release.

The defeated presidential contender offers a patchwork of explanations for what, exactly, did happen last year -- some of which she insists were outside her control and some she concedes were her own fault.

"I go back over my own shortcomings and the mistakes we made. I take responsibility for all of them. You can blame the data, blame the message, blame anything you want -- but I was the candidate," she writes. "It was my campaign. Those were my decisions."

In a voice that swings from defiant to conciliatory to -- at rare moments -- deeply vulnerable, Clinton does assume ownership where the fault lines are obvious. And in overarching terms, she admits she badly misjudged the environment in which she was running and the candidate she was running against.

News Alert: Obama speaks out on DACA

Former President Barack Obama bashed President Donald Trump's decision to rescind DACA, an immigration order shielding some children of undocumented immigrants from deportation.

"To target these young people is wrong -- because they have done nothing wrong," Obama wrote in a Facebook post. "It is self-defeating -- because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel."

Just before leaving office in January, Obama told reporters that he would speak out sparingly in his post-presidency. The lengthy statement is among his most forceful since departing office. He sharply criticized Trump's motives and insisted rescinding the program -- called DACA -- was not legally required.

News Alert: Trump ends DACA but gives Congress an opening

The Trump administration formally announced the end of DACA -- a program that had protected from deportation nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children.

The Department of Homeland Security will stop processing any new applications for the program as of Tuesday and has formally rescinded the Obama administration policy.

"The program known as DACA that was effectuated under the Obama administration is being rescinded," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday at a Justice Department news conference.

But the agency also announced a plan to continue renewing permits for anyone whose status expires in the next six months, giving Congress time to act before any currently protected individuals lose their ability to work, study and live without fear in the US.

News Alert: Irma strengthens to Category 5

Hurricane Irma has strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 5 storm, the National Hurricane Center said, as the storm threatened to slam into northeastern Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico by Wednesday before possibly taking aim at the US mainland.

Irma was churning Tuesday morning in the Atlantic about 270 miles east of Antigua and Barbuda, heading west with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph -- well above the 157-mph threshold for a Category 5, the strongest classification.

It is still too early to tell the exact impact Irma will have on the United States.

Computer models show the system eventually heading toward Cuba and possibly turning north toward Florida by the weekend.

Track the storm here.

Russia investigations

Lawyers working with a team led by special counsel Robert Mueller approached the Senate intelligence committee this summer with a request: They wanted the transcript of an interview Senate staff had conducted with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

But they were blocked. Manafort's lawyers said they had not authorized Mueller's legal team to access the interview transcript under the agreement with the committee, even though Mueller's attorneys said they had been given permission. The matter is still under discussion, sources say.

The previously undisclosed fight, described to CNN by multiple sources, underscores the new challenges as congressional committees and Mueller's operation head into a more intense phase of their parallel -- and sometimes, conflicting -- investigations into Russian election meddling and any collusion with Trump associates.

News Alert

President Donald Trump is expected to end a program that protected undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children -- so-called "Dreamers" -- from deportation, four sources familiar with the decision told CNN.

Two of the sources said the plan is to have a six-month delay in any action regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to allow Congress time to pass a fix through legislation that would allow the undocumented immigrants to stay in the country.

The expected move -- which comes after weeks of White House deliberations about what to do in response to an ultimatum from 10 state attorneys general led by Texas -- would satisfy Trump's base but upend the lives of nearly 800,000 people who were working and studying in the US. The DACA program, which gave qualified applicants protections from deportation, is popular among Democrats and moderate Republicans, many of whom have introduced legislation in Congress to try to protect the population permanently.

The sources said the expected decision to end the program with a six-month delay reflects the President's thinking as of Sunday night.

Officials have sent conflicting signals at times in the past as to what the final decision on the program's fate would be.

Several of the sources cautioned the decision would not be final until it is announced, which the White House has said will be Tuesday.

North Korea nuclear threat

US Defense Secretary James Mattis vowed "a massive military response" to any threat from North Korea against the United States or its allies. He delivered the statement outside the White House after a meeting with President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and top national security advisers Sunday.

Mattis said Trump wanted to be briefed on each of the "many military options" for dealing with the North Korean nuclear threat.

Mattis called on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to "take heed" of the UN Security Council's unanimous position against North Korea's nuclear program and again stressed the US military's position.

"We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country, namely North Korea, but as I said, we have many options to do so," Mattis said.

President Donald Trump warned earlier that the United States was considering stopping trade with any nation doing business with North Korea as a way of dealing with the nuclear threat from Pyongyang.

If carried out, that option could mean a halt to US trade with China, which has supported economic sanctions on North Korea but remains the key economic partner for the rogue nation.

Exclusive: Read the Inauguration Day letter Obama left for Trump

During his final moments in the Oval Office, President Barack Obama folded into thirds a handwritten letter to Donald Trump, slid it into an envelope, and in neat capital letters addressed it to "Mr. President."

Now, the contents of that letter -- the last direct communication between the 44th and 45th presidents -- have emerged for the first time after CNN obtained a copy.

News Alert

North Korea claims to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb, the country's sixth-ever test of a nuclear weapon and first since US President Donald Trump took office.

The test was a "perfect success" and the final step in attaining "state nuclear force," long-time news anchor Ri Chun Hee said in a televised announcement Sunday.

The news report claimed the weapon was designed to fit atop an intercontinental ballistic missile, and follows two successful tests of the long-range missile in July.

Experts say it is nearly impossible to verify with certainty Pyongyang's claim that it detonated a hydrogen bomb, which is also known as a thermonuclear weapon, or whether it can actually be used successfully on a missile. Thermonuclear weapons typically use a fission explosion to create a fusion reaction, which is far more powerful than a fission reaction.

The South Korean President's chief security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, said South Korea will seek diplomatic measures to "completely isolate" its northern neighbor.

China, North Korea's only real ally and patron, said its neighbor "disregarded universal opposition of the international community" by conducting the test."

News Alert

President Donald Trump got a second chance at the post-natural disaster presidential visit, embracing the role of "comforter in chief" on Saturday in a multistop tour of areas hard-hit by Harvey.

On Tuesday Trump visited Texas, where he touted the size of the crowd that greeted him while failing to mention the storm's victims, leaving critics and even some allies saying he failed to demonstrate the empathy and compassion presidents are expected to display during these visits.

On Saturday Trump returned, and he and first lady Melania Trump handed out boxed lunches. The President also shared hugs and shook hands with victims and volunteers, including many children.

Later in Louisiana, Trump met with members of the Cajun Navy volunteer rescue group.

News Alert

North Korea's regime has "succeeded in making a more developed nuke" and fitted it to a new intercontinental ballistic missile, according to the country's state news agency.

There was no independent confirmation of the claims.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watched the process at the country's Nuclear Weapons Institute, KCNA reported.

This week, North Korea launched an intermediate-range missile that flew over Japan, further exacerbating tensions in the region and with the United States.

Job growth slows in August

The US economy added only 156,000 jobs in August, less than recent months, according to the Labor Department.

The unemployment rate rose a bit to 4.4%, as fewer adults reported that they had a job during the month.

The Labor Department also revised down earlier estimates for job growth in both June and July by a total of 41,000 jobs, suggesting that the labor market is not as strong as it appeared to be a month ago.

News Alert

Kenya's Supreme Court has ordered a rerun of the country's contentious presidential election, after a legal challenge by the opposition.

Four out of six judges upheld a petition filed by opposition candidate Raila Odinga, who claimed the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta was fraudulent.

"The presidential election was not conducted in accordance with constitution, rendering the declared results invalid null and void," Chief Justice David Maraga said, ordering fresh elections within 60 days.

The court agreed with opposition arguments that the electoral commission had committed irregularities that invalidated the poll.
