News Alert: Ex-Trump campaign adviser pleads guilty

A former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser has pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the FBI after he lied about his interactions with foreign officials close to the Russian government, the campaign's clearest connection so far to Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 election.

In court records unsealed on Monday, the FBI said George Papadopoulos "falsely described his interactions with a certain foreign contact who discussed 'dirt' related to emails" concerning Hillary Clinton.

In addition, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates surrendered Monday to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller.

News Alert: Ex-Trump campaign chair Manafort surrenders to FBI

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is turning himself in Monday to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates has been told to turn himself in, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

Gates is a longtime business associate of Manafort, having worked together since the mid-2000s.

Manafort and Gates were indicted under seal on Friday, the source said. The indictments are expected to be unsealed later Monday. The extent of the charges was not immediately known.

The charges against two top officials from President Donald Trump's campaign signals a dramatic new phase of Mueller's wide-ranging investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and members of Trump's team as well as potential obstruction of justice and financial crimes.

News Alert: First charges filed in Mueller investigation

A federal grand jury in Washington on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.

Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

News Alert: In Hill interviews, top Dems denied knowledge of payments to firm behind Trump dossier

Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta and former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz both privately denied to congressional Russia investigators that they had any knowledge about an arrangement to pay for opposition research on President Donald Trump, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

The interviews happened before this week's disclosure that the Clinton campaign and DNC paid for the research. Senate investigators may seek to further question the two top Democrats and dig deeper on the origins of the so-called Trump dossier, one of the sources briefed on the matter said.

Podesta's and Wasserman Schultz's remarks to congressional investigators raise the stakes in their assertion that they knew nothing about the funding because it's against the law to make false statements to Congress.

News Alert: Trump to declare opioid epidemic a public health emergency

President Donald Trump will use an event at the White House on Thursday to declare the opioid crisis a public health emergency, White House officials tell CNN.

The move is different from the broad order Trump previewed over the last few months. The President, according to these officials, will direct acting Secretary of Health and Human Services Eric Hargan to declare a public health emergency under the Public Health Services Act, which directs federal agencies to provide more grant money to combat the epidemic, not an order through the Stafford Act.

There will be no additional federal funding directed under this order, said an official, who stressed that the Trump administration will work with Congress to fund the Public Health Emergency fund and to increase federal funding in year-end budget deals currently being negotiated in Congress.

The officials pushed back against the idea that Trump's order is less sweeping than what he promised, arguing that while the Stafford Act would have allowed funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Relief Fund to be used to combat opioids, it wasn't the right designation.

News Alert: Trump campaign analytics company contacted WikiLeaks about Clinton emails

The head of a data analytics company linked to the Trump campaign contacted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2016 regarding thousands of Hillary Clinton's emails kept on a private server while she was secretary of state, according to four sources familiar with the outreach.

Alexander Nix, the chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, sent an email to several people including top Donald Trump donor Rebekah Mercer, relaying that he had emailed Assange seeking access to emails from Clinton's private server to turn them into a searchable database for the campaign or a pro-Trump political action committee, two of the sources said.

News Alert: Sen. Jeff Flake won't seek re-election

Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake announced he would not seek re-election in 2018 in a historic, blistering critique of President Trump and politics in the US, saying he would rather retire than embrace Trump.

"The notion that one should stay silent as the norms and values that keep America strong are undermined and as the alliances and agreements that ensure the stability of the entire world are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters -- the notion that one should say and do nothing in the face of such mercurial behavior is ahistoric and, I believe, profoundly misguided."

Flake has been a vocal critic of President Trump and joins Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker as Republican senators who will retire before the midterm elections.

News Alert: Spain urges removal of Catalonia's leaders

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that his government was seeking to remove the leaders of Catalonia's regional government from power and call new elections as soon as possible.

The unprecedented measures would be taken under Article 155 of the Spanish constitution and must be sent to the Spanish Senate for approval. This would happen happen in the coming days, Rajoy said.

News Alert: Senate investigators spoke with Russians

Senate intelligence committee investigators have spoken with several Russians who attended a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Donald Trump Jr., a sign that the matter remains a significant focus for lawmakers looking into potential coordination between Trump associates and Kremlin-linked operatives during the presidential campaign.

Sen. Richard Burr, the chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, told CNN that the panel has interviewed some of the Russians who were at that meeting, which Trump Jr. attended after being promised dirt on the Clinton campaign and being informed that the Russian government wanted his father to win the presidency. Paul Manafort, who was then the Trump campaign chairman, along with the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also attended the meeting.

News Alert: Kelly defends Trump's call to Gold Star family

White House chief of staff John Kelly, in an extraordinary and at times emotional statement Thursday, said he was "stunned" by what a Democratic congresswoman told reporters after she listened in on President Donald Trump's call to the widow of a fallen soldier.

Kelly said he advised Trump on what to say to the families of the four soldiers who were killed in an ambush in Niger, among them Sgt. La David Johnson. Kelly said he encouraged Trump to offer words similar to those that Gen. Joseph Dunford offered to Kelly when his own son was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Trump's tax plans

A slim majority of Americans (52%) oppose President Donald Trump's recent tax reform proposals, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, while only one-third (34%) say they support the Trump plan.

Support is split largely along party lines. Eight-in-10 Democrats say they oppose the plans, but seven-in-10 Republicans say they support them. Independents break against the proposals: 50% opposed to 35% in favor. About 14% say they don't have an opinion.

Indeed, half of Americans disapprove of the way Trump is handling taxes, the highest level in CNN polling so far, while only 36% say they approve of his job performance on taxes. This is similar to a 34% approve to 47% disapprove split on the issue in September.

Trump comment called insensitive

President Donald Trump told the widow of a US serviceman killed in the ambush in Niger that "he knew what he signed up for ... but when it happens it hurts," according to Rep. Frederica Wilson.

The body of Sgt. La David Johnson was returned home to the Miami area late Tuesday afternoon, with the plane receiving a water cannon salute as it arrived near the gate.

The call from the President to Johnson's widow came shortly before Johnson's casket arrival, Wilson, a Florida Democrat, said on "CNN Tonight with Don Lemon."

Exclusive: The man behind the troll factory

Yevgeny Prigozhin is a Russian oligarch dubbed "chef" to President Vladimir Putin by the Russian press. In 2002, he served caviar and truffles to President George W. Bush during a summit in St. Petersburg. Before that, he renovated a boat that became the city's most exclusive restaurant.

But his business empire has expanded far beyond the kitchen. US investigators believe it was Prigozhin's company that financed a Russian "troll factory" that used social media to spread fake news during the 2016 US presidential campaign, according to multiple officials briefed on the investigation.

The Defense Department is conducting an initial review of the mission in Niger and the ambush by 50 ISIS-affiliated fighters that left four US soldiers dead and two wounded.

Multiple US officials have described to CNN a scene of confusion on the ground during the unexpected firefight. The investigation will be an effort "to get all the facts correct," an administration official familiar with the review told CNN.

The review will aim to determine precisely what happened -- something that is still not clear nearly two weeks after the incident occurred, according to the official.

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that Rep. Tom Marino, a Pennsylvania Republican, has withdrawn his name from consideration to become the nation's next drug czar.

The congressman's withdrawal comes after a joint CBS "60 Minutes" and Washington Post report revealed that Marino took nearly $100,000 from the pharmaceutical lobby while sponsoring a bill that made it easier for drug companies to distribute opioids across American communities and thwart the Drug Enforcement Agency.

CNN poll: Trump holds steady

President Donald Trump's approval rating holds steady in a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, but that overall stability belies declining views on how things are going in the country today.

Overall, 37% of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency, 57% disapprove -- virtually identical to his marks in late September. But the percentage who say things in the country are going well has fallen from 53% in August to 46% now, about the same as after Trump's tumultuous first weeks in office.

News Alert: North Korea rejects diplomacy, for now

A North Korean official on Monday reaffirmed Pyongyang's commitment to developing a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching "all the way to the East Coast of the mainland US," telling CNN that the rogue nation is currently not interested in diplomacy with the US until it achieves that goal.

North Korea is not ruling out diplomacy, but "before we can engage in diplomacy with the Trump administration, we want to send a clear message that the DPRK has a reliable defensive and offensive capability to counter any aggression from the United States," the official said.

A North Korean diplomat, meanwhile, publicly expressed anger on Monday over reports that a US-South Korean plan, to which hackers gained access, included the "decapitation" of the regime's leadership.

News Alert: NYC bomber case

A jury found Ahmad Rahimi guilty of eight federal charges Monday in connection with a September 2016 bombing that wounded 30 people in New York.

After a two-week trial and roughly four hours of jury deliberation, Rahimi was convicted of charges including the use and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, bombing a public place, destroying property by means of fire or explosives, and using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence -- namely, the use and attempted use of weapons of mass destruction. Rahimi faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison, according to a statement from acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon H. Kim.

Rahimi was arrested and charged after a pressure cooker bomb went off in New York's Chelsea neighborhood the night of September 17 last year. A second pressure cooker bomb was found a few blocks away, on 27th Street, but didn't detonate.

News Alert: Drinking water from a polluted site

A tall chain link fence, shrouded in vines, surrounds an aging water well tucked away in Dorado, a small town just west of San Juan. A metal sign carries a warning in Spanish to anyone who approaches: "Danger. Do Not Enter."

That doesn't stop Juan Carlos Oquendo, 39, from peeling away a corner of the fence and jumping inside. He's brought a van load of containers to fill.

But what he doesn't fully understand is that water from the faucet is potentially contaminated with industrial chemicals that can cause serious health issues.

Oquendo stresses that he's willing to take this chance because access to clean water in his neighborhood has been extremely difficult for much of the last month since Hurricane Maria wiped out Puerto Rico's water system.

News Alert: The private worries among Trump's allies

Top White House aides, lawmakers, donors and political consultants are privately asking whether President Donald Trump realizes that losing the House next year could put his presidency in peril.

In more than a dozen interviews, Republicans inside and outside the White House told CNN conversations are ramping up behind the scenes about whether Trump fully grasps that his feuds with members of his own party and shortage of legislative achievements could soon put the fate of his presidency at risk.

Some Republican donors received the message at a summer fundraiser: If Republicans forfeit the House, Democrats will almost certainly create a spectacle that will derail conservatives' agenda and the remainder of Trump's first term -- a spectacle complete with a raft of new subpoenas, a spotlight on the Russia investigation and, many are convinced, impeachment proceedings.

News alert: 31-year-old conservative to become Austrian Chancellor, exit poll predicts

Sebastian Kurz, a 31-year-old conservative, is set to become the next chancellor of Austria and Europe's youngest leader, though his party appears to have failed to win an outright majority, an exit poll predicts.

Kurz's People's Party (OVP) will gain the most seats in the National Council, winning 57 of 183, according to the exit poll by state broadcaster ORF.

The OVP is widely expected to form a coalition with the Freedom Party (FPO), which will win 51 seats, according to the poll. This would put a far-right party in an Austrian governing coalition for the first time in more than 10 years.

Exit polls are not final results and the number of votes and seats given to one party may change

News alert: Tillerson says US is trying to stay in Iran deal

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday the US is trying to stay in the Iran nuclear deal while hoping to achieve more from it, days after President Donald Trump threatened to pull the US out of the agreement.

"We're going to stay in," Tillerson said in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," though he left open the possibility that the US could seek another agreement.

Later in the interview, Tillerson repeatedly refused to say whether he called President Donald Trump a "moron" following a meeting at the Pentagon this past summer.

The secretary of state told Jake Tapper that he maintains a close and candid relationship with Trump, despite reports indicating Tillerson's frustrations with the commander in chief.

News Alert: Weinstein ousted

Harvey Weinstein -- who more than anyone defined the sharp-elbowed art of Oscar campaigning -- has been expelled from the group that presents the Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board voted on Saturday to strip the Hollywood mogul's membership after days of sexual harassment and assault allegations.

In a statement, the academy said the action, which is effective immediately, was intended "not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over."

Exclusive

Jose Luis Rodriguez waited in line Friday to fill plastic jugs in the back of his pickup truck with water for drinking, doing the dishes and bathing.

But there is something about this water Rodriguez didn't know: It was being pumped to him by water authorities from a federally designated hazardous waste site, CNN learned after reviewing Superfund documents and interviewing federal and local officials.

Rodriguez, 66, is so desperate for water that this news didn't startle him.

"I don't have a choice," he said. "This is the only option I have."

More than three weeks after Hurricane Maria ravaged this island, more than 35% of the island's residents -- American citizens -- remain without safe drinking water.

News Alert: Trump threatens to leave Iran deal

President Donald Trump threatened to pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement if Congress and US allies do not agree to strengthen it, throwing the future of the deal into doubt.

"As I have said many times, the Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into," Trump said Friday in laying out the sharp turn in US-Iran policy.

Trump accused Iran of committing "multiple violations of the agreement," despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency, America's European allies and even his own government say that Tehran is complying with the 2015 deal reached by former President Barack Obama and major world powers.

New approach to Iran

President Donald Trump will announce a combative new strategy toward Iran on Friday, ending the United States' adherence to his predecessor's nuclear deal but stopping short, for now, of scrapping the agreement entirely.

The move doesn't amount to ripping up the Iran nuclear accord as he promised to do as a candidate.

Instead, Trump will foist the agreement upon Congress, who now have 60 days to determine a path forward. Republicans and Democrats alike -- who also face upcoming battles over taxes, immigration, and health care -- have shown few signs they're willing to take up another divisive issue.

Breaking News

President Donald Trump plans to end the cost-sharing subsidies that have helped some lower-income Americans purchase health insurance on the Obamacare marketplace, the White House announced Thursday.

The subsidies have required a monthly payment approved by Trump, which until now have gone forward. The White House has said it would consider each month's payment on an individual basis.

The move has the potential to dramatically increase costs for some Obamacare customers. It's the latest step taken by Trump to dismantle aspects of the signature health law signed by his predecessor.

Earlier Thursday, the President signed an executive order that broadly tasks the administration with developing policies to increase health care competition and choice in order to improve the quality of health care and lower prices. However, it could also destabilize Obamacare by siphoning off younger and healthier Americans from the exchanges.

News Alert: Russian meddling ... and Pikachu

Russian efforts to meddle in American politics did not end at Facebook and Twitter. A CNN investigation of a Russian-linked account shows its tentacles extended to YouTube, Tumblr and even Pokémon Go.

One Russian-linked campaign posing as part of the Black Lives Matter movement used Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Pokémon Go and even contacted some reporters in an effort to exploit racial tensions and sow discord among Americans, CNN has learned.

The campaign, titled “Don’t Shoot Us,” offers new insights into how Russian agents created a broad online ecosystem where divisive political messages were reinforced across multiple platforms, amplifying a campaign that appears to have been run from one source -- the shadowy, Kremlin-linked troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency.

News Alert: Trump takes first big swipe at Obamacare

President Donald Trump took his first steps Thursday toward fulfilling his vow to dismantle Obamacare, signing an executive order that he says will bring affordable health insurance to millions more people.

The order broadly tasks the administration with developing policies to increase health care competition and choice in order to improve the quality of health care and lower prices.

However, it could also destabilize Obamacare by siphoning out younger and healthier Americans from the exchanges.

News Alert: Las Vegas killer's destructive ambitions

Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock fired special incendiary bullets at a 43,000-barrel airport fuel tank in what investigators believe was an attempt to cause an explosion, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

Those types of rounds, meant to ignite what they hit, were found inside Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and near the fuel tank a short distance away on the grounds of McCarran International Airport, the sources said.

News Alert: Deadly wildfires burn in California

At least 10 people are dead and more than 20,000 have been evacuated as wildfires burn in California's wine country and other parts of the state.

More than 100 people have been hospitalized for fire-related injuries or health issues, including burns, smoke inhalation and shortness of breath. An estimated 1,500 structures have been destroyed and at least 57,000 acres are affected.

California's governor has declared a state of emergency for three counties. Authorities have not said what caused the fires but noted that dry conditions made it easy for the fires to spread.

News Alert: Trump's DACA demands

The White House on Sunday night is expected to release an aggressive list of priorities for any deal to protect young undocumented immigrants in limbo -- a list that could make a deal almost impossible to reach if it is strictly followed.

According to documents obtained by CNN, the Trump administration is expected to ask lawmakers to include tough border security and immigration enforcement measures in any deal to replace the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program the administration is ending. Those measures would include provisions to make it harder for unaccompanied minors to enter the country illegally, money for the President's border wall and cuts to legal immigration.

While Democrats have signaled an openness to some deal on DACA and border security, many of the proposals alone would be deal-breakers. Democrats are almost certainly needed to pass a bill to clear the filibuster threshold of 60 votes in the Senate and to make up for Republicans in both chambers who may decline to vote for any path to citizenship or legalization for DACA recipients.

Harvey Weinstein has been fired from the film company he co-founded, three days after a New York Times investigation detailed numerous incidents of alleged sexual harassment by the media mogul.

Weinstein's brother, Bob, was one of the board members who made the decision.

News Alert: Trump vs. Corker

President Donald Trump's tweets Sunday morning claiming he denied Sen. Bob Corker's request for an endorsement are false, two sources familiar with the discussions said.

Trump told Corker he was going to endorse him the day the Tennessee Republican announced his intention to retire, the sources said.

"The President called the senator early last week and asked him to reconsider his decision not to seek re-election and reaffirmed that he would have endorsed him, as he has said many times," one of the sources said.

Trump attacked Corker in a series of tweets Sunday, days after the Tennessee Republican made public comments criticizing him, prompting Corker to respond by tweeting an insult later in the morning calling the White House "an adult day care center."

News Alert: Stoking Islamophobia and secession in Texas -- from Russia

On May 21, 2016, a handful of people turned out to protest the opening of a library at an Islamic Center in Houston, Texas. Two held up a banner proclaiming #WhiteLivesMatter. A counter-protest began across the street; video shows a noisy but non-violent confrontation.

The rally -- called “Stop Islamization of Texas” -- was organized and promoted by a Facebook page called Heart of Texas, which had wrongly alleged that the Islamic library had received public funding. But the Heart of Texas page listed no contacts in the Lone Star state. In fact, it was operated by a “troll factory” called the Internet Research Agency thousands of miles away in St Petersburg, Russia, CNN has learned.

The Houston rally sheds light on an effort originating in Russia to sow discord in the US through social media; in this case it had real impact on the ground.

News Alert: Mueller's team met with Russia dossier author

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators met this past summer with the former British spy whose dossier on alleged Russian efforts to aid the Trump campaign spawned months of investigations that have hobbled the Trump administration, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Information from Christopher Steele, a former MI-6 officer, could help investigators determine whether contacts between people associated with the Trump campaign and suspected Russian operatives broke any laws.

CNN has learned that the FBI and the US intelligence community last year took the Steele dossier more seriously than the agencies have publicly acknowledged. James Clapper, then the director of national intelligence, said in a January 2017 statement that the intelligence community had "not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable."

News Alert: Inside the Las Vegas massacre

Caren Mansholt is on her feet, clapping along with the crowd. She and more than 22,000 others are at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas Strip.

A rapid series of pops bursts through the air. Fireworks, she thinks, and she looks to the sky to see them. Nothing is there. Strange. Back to the music. Country star Jason Aldean is playing "When She Says Baby."

Then Aldean and his band rush off the stage and the crowd realizes something is terribly wrong. Some people start running for exits. Others are already hurt.

Across the street, on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, Stephen Paddock has turned a luxury suite into a sniper’s nest. He sprays off a round of bullets. Then another series of rapid fire shots. He does not stop.

This account of what happened on the Las Vegas Strip Sunday when 58 people were killed and hundreds injured is based on numerous interviews with survivors, witnesses, first responders and officials.

News Alert: Trump plans to 'decertify' Iran deal

President Donald Trump plans to "decertify" the Iran nuclear deal next week, declaring the Obama-era pact not in US interests and launching a congressional review period on the accord, according to two senior US officials.

Trump is tentatively scheduled to unveil his plan during remarks a week from Thursday, though one official cautioned the timing could shift.

The decision, which was first reported by The Washington Post, stops short of completely scrapping the Iran deal, which Trump railed against on the campaign trail. Instead, Trump would kick the matter to Congress, which would then have 60 days to determine a path forward.

News Alert: Killer's girlfriend breaks her silence

The girlfriend of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock says she saw no signs he was planning "something horrible," and that she is "devastated" by the deaths and injuries he caused when he rained bullets down on an outdoor music concert.

Marilou Danley, Paddock's girlfriend, issued a statement Wednesday afternoon through her attorney, Matt Lombard. He said Danley is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Danley said that, more than two weeks ago, Paddock told her he had bought a plane ticket for her to fly to her native Philippines, saying that he wanted her to visit her family. While she was in the Philippines, Danley said, Paddock wired her money that he said was for her to buy a house for her and her family.

Danley said she was grateful but "worried" that the unexpected trip home and the money "was a way of breaking up with me."

Trump-Tillerson tensions escalate

Discord between President Donald Trump and his chief diplomat is at an all-time high, spilling into public view in recent days, peaking with a NBC News report Wednesday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a "moron" in a Pentagon meeting.

Trump was aware before Wednesday's report that Tillerson had referred to him as a "moron" at the Pentagon this summer, a source familiar with the conversation told CNN, but it's unclear whether Trump discussed the remark with Tillerson. Trump was not present at the Pentagon meeting.

During a hastily arranged statement Wednesday morning, Tillerson insisted he enjoys a close relationship with Trump and called him "smart."

Though Tillerson didn't deny calling Trump a moron, Trump tweeted: "The @NBCNews story has just been totally refuted by Sec. Tillerson and @VP Pence. It is #FakeNews. They should issue an apology to AMERICA!"

Trump visits Puerto Rico

President Donald Trump huddled with local and federal officials Tuesday in Puerto Rico, praising his administration's response to the hurricane that devastated the island.

Trump noted that the devastation in Puerto Rico has "thrown our budget a little out of whack," though he said that was "fine."

At one point, Trump remarked on the 16-person death toll, which he touted as low compared to how many could have died.

As Trump thanked local officials, he focused on the praise some local officials offered of him and his administration more than on the work local officials have done in response to the hurricane.

At least 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured in a mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip, authorities said Monday.

      The shooter:

       • Police served a search warrant on the Mesquite, Nevada, home of the Las Vegas shooter, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, on Monday morning. Authorities found weapons and ammunition but could not go into details, according the Mesquite Police Department.

      • An additional property in northern Nevada owned by the shooter will be searched soon, Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said in a news conference.

      • "We had no knowledge of this individual," Lombardo said of Paddock. "I don't know how it could have been prevented."

      • The shooter's brother, Eric Paddock, told CNN: "He was my brother, and it's like an asteroid fell out of the sky." He said the last time he spoke to his brother was when Stephen texted asking how their mother was after they lost power for five days in a storm. Eric Paddock said he knew of a couple of handguns and maybe one long rifle but did not know of any automatic weapons owned by Stephen Paddock.

      • The shooter had been at the Mandalay Bay hotel since Thursday, authorities said. Hotel employees had been in his room prior to the shooting and did not notice anything amiss, according to Lombardo.

      • Police said in a statement that officers "breached the hotel room" where the shooter was located and "found the suspect dead." Authorities believe he killed himself.

      • Police do not believe there were any additional shooters.

      Casualties:

      • At least 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured, authorities said.

      • US Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada said that the biggest need right now is blood.

      • This is the deadliest shooting in modern US history. The 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, previously was the deadliest, with 49 killed.

       Investigation:

      • The FBI said they have determined no connection with an international terrorist group.

      • Authorities said they are not calling the attack terrorism at this time. "We have to establish what his motivation was first," said Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, when asked why this event has not been labeled domestic terrorism.

      • The shooter had bought multiple firearms in the past, several purchased in California, a law enforcement official told CNN. But those don't appear to be among the 10 or more found in the Mandalay Bay hotel room.

      • So far, investigators believe the firearms were purchased legally.

      How the attack unfolded:

      • At around 10:08 p.m. local time Sunday (1:08 a.m. ET Monday) the Route 91 Harvest Festival -- a country music concert -- was interrupted by the sound of gunfire, witnesses said.

      • Police said the gunman fired on the crowd of about 22,000 people from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, several hundred feet southwest of the concert grounds.

      • Country music singer Jason Aldean was performing when the gunshots began, according to witnesses' cell phone video.

      • "The gunshots lasted for 10 to 15 minutes. It didn't stop," said witness Rachel de Kerf.

      Reaction:

      • DHS said there was no credible threat involving other public venues, but security could increase.

      • President Donald Trump used a solemn address from the White House to call for unity, saying the massacre was "an act of pure evil."

      • The Orlando Police Department, which investigated the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, tweeted condolences to those affected by the Las Vegas shooting.

      • From Germany to the Vatican to the UK, there has been an outpouring of support from world leaders after the mass shooting.
