Breaking News

President Barack Obama has arrived at Japan’s Hiroshima Peace Memorial, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit the site of the first nuclear bombing.

Obama will deliver remarks, and he previewed his message to the world during a press conference Thursday at the G-7 Summit.

The president, who is not expected to apologize for the American action to hasten the end of World War II, said he would stress the “very real risks” of nuclear weapons and he called the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima an “inflection point in modern history" that still weighs heavily on everyone more than 70 years later.

Obama’s visit to the site of the devastation that left tens of thousands dead was at least six years in the making inside the White House. Japanese officials had initially discouraged the President from coming, but the final ground was paved by Secretary of State John Kerry, who visited the memorial and museum in April and impressed the Japanese with his remarks.

A State Department inspector general’s report faults former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for not complying with policies for email preservation, according to a copy of the report obtained by CNN.

"At a minimum, Secretary Clinton should have surrendered all emails dealing with department business before leaving government service and, because she did not do so, she did not comply with the department's policies that were implemented in accordance with the Federal Records Act," said the report, which was provided to lawmakers.

It also said the actions of several other secretaries of state were reviewed, and inconsistencies were found.

Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department's public integrity unit, U.S. officials briefed on the probe say.

The investigation dates to at least last year and has focused, at least in part, on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law, the officials said.

McAuliffe wasn't notified by investigators that he is a target of the probe, according to the officials.

"The governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it," said Marc Elias, an attorney for McAuliffe's campaign, in a statement to CNN.

Taliban leader Mullah Mansour was likely killed in an airstrike in Pakistan on Saturday, two U.S. officials told CNN.

U.S. officials are still assessing the results of the strike, one official said.

The strike was carried out by multiple unmanned aircraft operated by U.S. Special Operations forces. President Barack Obama authorized the strike.

The number of Zika cases among pregnant women in the United States has increased from 48 to 157, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

It's unclear whether the increase is because there are more pregnant women with the virus or because officials are now keeping track of them in a different way -- or a combination of the two.

The report also says there are another 122 pregnant women with “laboratory evidence” of the Zika virus in U.S. territories.

The cause behind the disappearance of EgyptAir Flight 804 is more likely to be terrorism than a technical issue, Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sharif Fathi said.

"We do not deny there is a possibility of terrorism or deny the possibility of technical fault," Fathi said at a Cairo news conference.

An Egyptian search aircraft has spotted two floating objects 210 nautical miles southwest of Crete, but it's unclear whether the objects are part of the missing aircraft, according to a spokesman for Greece's Hellenic National Defense General Staff.

EgyptAir Flight 804 vanished from radar on its way from Paris to Cairo with 66 people aboard, the airline said Thursday.

The plane was flying at 37,000 feet when it lost contact overnight above the Mediterranean Sea, the airline tweeted.

The flight left Charles de Gaulle Airport at 11:09 p.m. Wednesday local time and was supposed to land in Cairo at 3:15 a.m. Thursday. Both the departure and arrival cities are in the same time zone.

The location of last contact was 173 miles (280 kilometers) from the Egyptian coast, the airline tweeted.

There was no special cargo on the flight and no notification of any dangerous goods aboard, an airline official said.

The plane had routine maintenance checks Wednesday in Cairo, before it left for Paris, an airline official said.

A distress signal was detected in the general vicinity where the flight disappeared, the airline official said. The signal was detected at 4:26 a.m. -- about 2 hours after the jet vanished. He said the distress signal could have come from another vessel in the Mediterranean. But the Egyptian armed forces stressed that they had not received a distress call.

There's no confirmed information on the status of the missing plane, Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said.

Greek air traffic controllers spoke to the pilot at 2:27 a.m. Cairo time, but the pilot did not mention any problems, aviation officials said. The plane left Greek airspace a minute later and entered Egypt's airspace. Two minutes later, Greek radars lost touch with it.

Greece is taking part in the rescue operation.

Federal courts and Congress "must intercede" after federal guidance for U.S. public schools to let transgender students use bathrooms matching gender identity, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory said in a statement.

"An aggressive plan" to deal with increased security line wait times at U.S. airports has been developed with the TSA, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Friday at a news conference.

Facing hours-long TSA checkpoint lines at U.S. airports this week, travelers are snapping pictures and uploading videos to document the mess.
