Breaking News

Half of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, has been impacted by forest fires, Mayor Mike Warner said.

At least 100 structures have been damaged in the city by fires propelled by strong winds that pushed from the Great Smoky Mountains into and near communities, he said.

However, downtown Gatlinburg "has largely remained intact," Fire Chief Greg Miller said, and because winds have died down, "the worst is definitely over with."

Fires also burned at the edge of the Dollywood theme park in nearby Pigeon Forge.

Here's what you need to know:

      • More than 14,000 residents and visitors are believed to have been evacuated from Gatlinburg, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said. Evacuations also have been ordered in other communities including Pigeon Forge.

      • At least four people have been hospitalized with burns, TEMA said.

      • Among the buildings destroyed in Gatlinburg are a 16-story hotel and an apartment complex, TEMA said.

      • There are conflicting reports about whether certain popular resorts have been destroyed. The Ober Gatlinburg ski resort and amusement park overlooking Gatlinburg said on Twitter Tuesday morning that its "property is okay." Earlier Tuesday, a TEMA spokesman, citing initial reports from county officials, said it appeared the park had been destroyed.

      • Other popular Gatlinburg attractions were under threat, including Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, which has 1,500 animals left inside.

Breaking News

Three Gatlinburg-area resorts appear to have been destroyed by wildfires in the popular tourist area in eastern Tennessee, a state emergency management spokesman said.

The resorts are the Ober Gatlinburg amusement park and ski area, the Black Bear Falls log-cabin rental resort, and the Westgate Mountain Resort & Spa, the spokesman said, citing initial reports from Sevier County emergency management officials.

At least four people have been injured in the wildfires, which have been spurred by strong winds and the Southeast's worst drought in nearly a decade.

The fires have forced evacuations from downtown Gatlinburg -- a city of about 4,000 residents but a vacation attraction for many more -- as well as the town of Pigeon Forge and nearby communities.

A suspect is dead after an attack on Ohio State University's campus, a federal law enforcement official said.

Witness accounts suggest the attack involved a knife and a car, an official said. Several people were taken to hospitals.

A “shelter in place” order was lifted and the scene was secured, the school tweeted.

Student Jacob Bower told CNN the attacker “was completely silent, which was very creepy."

“He pulled a large knife and started chasing people around trying to attack them,” Bower said, adding that an officer saved many lives by shooting the attacker.

President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday blasted as a "scam" the Green Party's effort to get a voting recount, and he accused the party's nominee, Jill Stein, of trying to reel in donations she won't actually spend.

"The people have spoken and the election is over,” Trump said in a statement.

Hillary Clinton's campaign said Saturday it will take part in efforts to push for recounts in several key states, joining with Stein, who has raised millions of dollars to have votes counted again in Wisconsin.

Breaking News

Green Party officials have filed for a recount of presidential votes in Wisconsin, following suggestions of voting discrepancies.

Wisconsin Green Party co-chairman George Martin said that they were seeking a "reconciliation of paper records" -- a request that would go one step further than a simple recount, spurring, he said, an investigation into the integrity of the state's voting system.

The announcement comes as Green Party candidate Jill Stein's recount fundraising blitz passed $5 million. She initially sought $2 million. Wisconsin party officials said that any money not used for the recount would be used to train Green Party candidates for local office.

The Clinton campaign has stayed out of the recount debate. The Trump campaign and his top advisers have dismissed the effort. Former Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway tweeted that opponents were being sore losers.

Breaking News

This Thanksgiving, Americans say that they really don’t want to talk politics around the dinner table.

In fact, a new CNN/ORC poll finds that 53% of Americans say they dread the thought of talking politics over Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.

Republicans, however, are generally eager to discuss the topic with 58% on board to do so, but 63% of Democrats say they want no part of it. Overall, a minority, 43%, say they are eager to delve into politics with their stuffing.

Those who do want to talk about politics could discuss President Barack Obama’s popularity. His approval rating in a separate CNN/ORC poll stands at 57%, his highest since September 2009. That figure is on par with Ronald Reagan's approval rating shortly after the presidential election in 1988, and approaching the level reached by Bill Clinton in November 2000.

The warm ratings for Obama do not extend to his party, however. Favorability ratings for the Democratic Party dropped 6 points since October, and the 54% who hold an unfavorable opinion of it is the highest in CNN/ORC or CNN/USA Today/Gallup polling dating back to 1992.

Other topics of conversation could include:

President-elect Donald Trump's administration will not pursue further investigations of Hillary Clinton's private email server or the Clinton Foundation, according to his former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway.

Trump's decision represents a significant break from a major campaign promise -- at the second presidential debate in early October, Trump threatened Clinton, saying that "if I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation."

Conway said Clinton "still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don't find her to be honest or trustworthy," but added that "if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that's a good thing to do."

Breaking News

Two weeks after Election Day, most Americans say President-elect Donald Trump will ultimately do a good job as president, though fewer approve of the way he's handled the transition so far, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll.

A narrow majority (53%), say they think Trump will do a very or fairly good job as president, and 40% say they have a lot of confidence in Trump to deal with the economy, a share that outpaces the percentage who had that much confidence in Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton or Ronald Reagan ahead of their first inaugurations.

That perception comes as majorities think Trump will achieve several of the goals outlined during his campaign as top priorities. Nearly three-quarters say Trump is likely to repeal and replace Obamacare, two-thirds think he will renegotiate NAFTA and 6 in 10 say he'll create good-paying jobs in economically challenged areas. Separately, 63% say they expect the economy to be in good shape a year from now, the highest share to say so since September 2012.

Americans are more divided over whether Trump will "drain the swamp" and reduce the amount of corruption in Washington (51% think that's likely), defeat ISIS (50% see that as likely) or build a wall along the border with Mexico (48% see that as likely).

All told, 66% say a Trump presidency will bring change to the country, but just 43% say it will be change for the better, twenty points below the 63% who thought Obama would bring change for the better in November 2008.

Trump's favorability has risen post-election to a high point in CNN/ORC polling: 47% have a favorable view of him, 50% unfavorable. Though still tilting negative, those ratings outpace the previous high reached just after the GOP convention in July, when 43% saw Trump favorably.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he emerged from a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump feeling that the two leaders will be able to maintain "a relationship of trust."

Trump has repeatedly suggested Japan should shoulder a bigger financial burden for the US military forces there. Abe declined to tell reporters if the two men hashed out the defense issue or discussed their disagreement over the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

President Obama, making a final return as a head of state to Berlin, issued a warning to President-elect Donald Trump in his dealings with Russia.

He cautioned that on issues like Ukraine and Syria, Moscow must be confronted head-on. He advised Trump against making deals with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could hurt Americans.

"I don't expect the President-elect will follow exactly our blueprint or our approach, but my hope is he does not simply take a realpolitik approach and suggest we cut some deals with Russia, even if it hurts people or violates international norms or leaves smaller countries vulnerable," he said.

JPMorgan pays $264 million to settle charges of a "systematic bribery scheme" aimed at winning business in China.

Federal prosecutors and regulators say the bank gave jobs and internships to "unqualified" children of Chinese government officials.

The settlement ends a three-year investigation into JPMorgan and marks one of the first major crackdowns on a big U.S. bank for running afoul of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Known as the FCPA, the law prohibits companies from making payments or giving "anything of value" to win business from foreign officials.

Breaking News

House Republicans have agreed to put off a proposal to bring back earmarks until the first quarter of 2017 after a plea from House Speaker Paul Ryan.

"We just had a drain-the-swamp election," Ryan told members according to a GOP source in the room. "Let's not just turn around and bring back earmarks two weeks later."

Supporters of the earmarks argue that the ban on them goes too far, because they can't direct funding to much-needed projects in their districts. They say the current restrictions give too much power to the White House and unelected bureaucrats in federal agencies who now decide where to spend money.

President Barack Obama says that Donald Trump tapped into a troubling strain of rhetoric playing on Americans' fears of globalization to win the presidency.

Speaking in Athens, Greece, Obama said he recognized an "anger and fear in the American population" over threats of mechanization and globalization, but that Republican officials didn't use facts when making their case about the US economy.

"You've seen some of the rhetoric among Republican elected officials and activists and media. Some of it pretty troubling and not necessarily connected to facts, but being used effectively to mobilize people," Obama said at a news conference. "And obviously President-elect Trump tapped into that particular strain within the Republican Party and then was able to broaden that enough and get enough votes to win the election."

Breaking News: Obama news conference

President Barack Obama said that the United States would remain the world's "indispensable" power and that President-elect Donald Trump had told him he was committed to NATO.

"In my conversations with the President-elect, he expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships," Obama said, adding that he had a message from Trump to pass on to world leaders he will meet this week.

"There is no weakening of resolve when it comes to maintaining a strong and robust NATO relationship," Obama said.

Obama took questions from reporters before leaving on the final scheduled international trip of his presidency -- to Greece, Germany and Peru. Watch CNN coverage.

On Republicans’ election victories, Obama said the Democratic Party has “better ideas” but that “good ideas don’t matter if people don’t hear them.”

"I think it's a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to go through some reflection,” Obama said.

He encouraged Trump to reach out to women and minorities who were concerned about the tenor of the campaign.

Breaking News: Trump at White House

President-elect Donald Trump called President Barack Obama a "very good man" as the two long-time antagonists met in the Oval Office in a ritual epitomizing the peaceful transfer of power.

Obama said the two men talked about foreign policy and domestic policy and that he was encouraged by Trump's interest in working together during the transition.

"My No. 1 priority in the next two months is to try to facilitate a transition that ensures our President-elect is successful," Obama said.

As the two men sat in the Oval Office, Obama told Trump: "If you succeed, the country succeeds."

Trump thanked Obama for the meeting, which he said had originally been scheduled for 10-15 minutes but instead ran about 90 minutes.

"Mr. President, it was a great honor being with you, and I look forward to being with you many, many more times," Trump said.

The President-elect also said he would seek counsel from Obama.

Trump is also scheduled to meet with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell while in Washington. Watch coverage on CNN.

Breaking News: Ayotte concedes

Republican Kelly Ayotte has conceded the race for her US Senate seat in New Hampshire to Democrat Maggie Hassan, Ayotte's campaign says, giving Democrats their second pick-up in the chamber this election cycle.

Hassan's victory makes the count for senators who caucus with Democrats 48 seats, short of the majority they were aiming for before Election Day.

Tammy Duckworth of Illinois was the only other Democratic pick-up of the night, which saw Republicans retain control over their conference and the House.

Breaking News: Obama speaks

President Barack Obama promised to work for a "smooth transition" of power to President-elect Donald Trump when he leaves office in January, citing the example set by former President George W. Bush eight years ago.

"I had a chance to talk to President-elect Trump last night at 3:30 in the morning to congratulate him on winning the election and invited him to the White House tomorrow to talk about making sure there is a successful transition between our two presidencies," Obama said from the White House Rose Garden, with Vice President Joe Biden at his side.

Obama had campaigned hard against Trump to boost his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, who conceded the race in a speech earlier Wednesday.

"It is no secret that the President-elect and I have some pretty significant differences," Obama said, adding later, that "we all want what's best for this country."

BREAKING NEWS: In victory, Trump calls for unity

Donald Trump promised to work to "bind the wounds of division" and bring Americans together as the next president of the United States as he claimed victory in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

"I say it is time for us to come together as one united people," said Trump, marking the end of a divisive and intensely vitriolic 2016 presidential election. "I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans and this is so important to me."

Trump began that process by congratulating his opponent Hillary Clinton on her "very, very hard-fought campaign" and said Americans "owe her a major debt of gratitude" for her decades of public service. He said Clinton called on him to concede the race and to congratulate Trump on his victory.
