George Pataki has announced he is ending his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

"While tonight is the end of my journey for the White House as I suspend my campaign for president, I am confident we can elect the right person," Pataki said in a web video posted on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. "Someone who will bring us together and who understands that politicians, including the president, must be the people's servant and not their master."

The former New York governor hoped his experience as a three-term chief executive, whose tenure included the September 11 terrorist attacks, would resonate with the Republican Party. But he never broke single digits in polling or qualified for prime-time debates.

The mother of "affluenza" teen Ethan Couch will face a charge of hindering apprehension after the two are repatriated from Mexico, the sheriff of Tarrant County, Texas, said today.

Tonya Couch and her son, who will appear before a juvenile court judge, are in custody in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta.

Sheriff Dee Anderson said it looked like the mother and son held a going-away party before leaving for Mexico.

Ethan Couch, 18, went missing earlier this month in Texas, where he was under probation for a 2013 drunk driving crash that killed four people and drew nationwide attention over his lawyers' use of his privileged upbringing as part of their defense at trial.

Americans are divided on whether President Barack Obama brought positive or negative change to the United States, and express broad dissatisfaction with government and anger about the way things are going in the nation generally.

According to a new CNN/ORC poll, 75% of Americans say they are dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed, and 69% are at least somewhat angry with the way things are going in the U.S., both metrics about as negative as they were in fall 2014.

While majorities across party lines express dissatisfaction and anger, Republicans are most likely to feel that way. Both sentiments are particularly strong among those Republicans who back Donald Trump in the GOP race for the nomination. Overall, 90% of Republicans are dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed, and 82% express anger with the way things are going in the U.S. today. Among Trump backers, 97% are dissatisfied with government, 91% at least somewhat angry.

The younger Carter's heart stopped, the minister said, and the family tried CPR and rushed him to a hospital.

All three Democratic presidential candidates -- front-runner Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley -- focused significant time on attacking Donald Trump at a debate in New Hampshire. Clinton called the Republican front-runner "ISIS' best recruiter."

While the candidates differed over the importance of ousting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and over the best approaches to gun regulation, they also pointed out areas where they were united in opposing what Clinton called the Republican effort to "roll back the progress we've made."

Sanders apologized to Clinton and to his own supporters for his campaign staff's actions to improperly access Clinton campaign data. "This is not the type of campaign that we run," the Vermont senator said in response to Saturday evening's first question.

In a later exchange about the role of corporations in America, Sanders sought to paint Clinton as too close to the business elite. Asked if corporate America should love Hillary Clinton, Clinton responded, "Everybody should." Sanders, asked if corporate America would love a President Sanders, said "No, I think they won't," and added, "Wall Street will like me even less."

The judge has declared a mistrial in the case of Baltimore police Officer William Porter after jurors said they were deadlocked and unable to reach a unanimous verdict on any of the four charges against him. Porter was one of six officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray.

Prosecutors will decide whether to re-try the case. Porter, who is black, faced charges including manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.

Gray, 25, died after being shackled and placed without a seat belt in a Baltimore City police van. His death on April 19 made him a symbol of the black community's distrust of police. Three of the officers charged in his death are white; three are black.

Cruz has vocally opposed a path to citizenship but had previously taken pains during the campaign to avoid ruling out a path to legal status.

Front-runner Donald Trump opened tonight's debate by defending his call to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States, as well as his previous push to deport all undocumented immigrants.

"We are not talking about isolation; we are talking about security," Trump said at the event in Las Vegas. "We are not talking about religion; we are talking about security."

Jeb Bush dismissed Trump's proposal regarding Muslims as not serious.

"Donald is great at the one-liners, but he's a chaos candidate, and he'd be a chaos president," Bush said as Trump visibly reacted on screen next to him.

National security, the fight against ISIS and the role of Muslims in American society dominated the first round of tonight's Republican presidential debate.

While Sen. Lindsey Graham apologized to the Muslim world for Donald Trump, former Sen. Rick Santorum made the argument that the U.S. is at war with factions of Islam and has "entered World War III."

Graham advocated more American troops in Syria. Rick Santorum disagreed, saying that would play into the hands of ISIS.

The debate's main event, featuring Donald Trump and the eight other leading candidates, begins soon.

Donald Trump said he was acting in the Islamic community's best interests when he proposed a temporary halt to Muslim immigration to the United States.

"I'm doing good for the Muslims," Trump told Don Lemon in an interview for "CNN Tonight." "Many Muslim friends of mine are in agreement with me. They say, 'Donald, you brought something up to the fore that is so brilliant and so fantastic.'"

Trump pinned the fierce backlash that followed his call for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States" on Republican establishment figures and his primary opponents.

He also said he was not likely to wage a third-party candidacy. But the Republican front-runner said that could change if the GOP establishment doesn't start treating him "with a certain amount of decorum and respect."

As the San Bernardino attack was underway, investigators believe the female shooter, Tashfeen Malik, posted on Facebook, pledging allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, three U.S. officials familiar with the investigation told CNN.

The posting by Malik was made on an account with a different name, according to one U.S. official. The officials did not explain how they knew Malik made the post.

Syed Rizwan Farook, one of two killers in the San Bernardino shooting, was apparently radicalized and in touch with international terrorism suspects, law enforcement officials said on Thursday.

Twenty-one people were wounded in Wednesday's deadly shooting, up from 17, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said in a press briefing on Thursday. Fourteen people were killed in the attack.

Police found a pipe bomb at the location that had a remote control device that appeared not to have worked, Burguan said. A search of the shooters' home also revealed 12 pipe bomb-type devices, he said.

All U.S. military combat positions are being opened up to women, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Thursday.

The decision allows women to fill about 220,000 jobs that are now limited to men -- including infantry, armor, reconnaissance and some special operations units.

"This means that as long as they qualify and meet the standards, women will now be able to contribute to our mission in ways they could not before. They'll be able to drive tanks, give orders, lead infantry soldiers into combat," Carter said at a news conference Thursday.

"There will be no exceptions," he added.

CNN Breaking News

The two suspects killed in a gunfight with police after a mass shooting in San Bernardino were Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, said San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.

Burguan said police are now "pretty comfortable" that Farook and Malik were the only shooters involved in the massacre that left at least 14 people dead at the Inland Regional Center. Police earlier suggested there were three shooters.

Farook, 28, and Malik, 27, were "either boyfriend, girlfriend; husband and wife," said Burguan.

One of the suspects involved in the San Bernardino shootings has been identified as Syed Farook, an inspector with the county health department, who abruptly left an event at the Inland Regional Center before the shootings, law enforcement sources tell CNN.

The sources said a residence in Redlands, California, surrounded by law enforcement is connected to Farook. It is that house where a chase began earlier in the day that led to a shootout with the occupants of an SUV.

The sources could not say for certain that he was in the SUV, if he was a shooter, or whether he is one of the dead. The sources did say that Farook is known to be a U.S. citizen.

CNN Breaking News

Two suspects in a mass shooting at a conference center in San Bernardino, California, have been fatally shot in a gunbattle with police. This is what we know at this hour.

The initial shooting:
- At least 14 people were killed and 17 were injured in the shooting, according to Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.
- Most of the victims were "centrally located in one area of the facility," Burguan said.
- Authorities are working to determine whether a suspicious device found at the center is an explosive, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told CNN affiliate KABC.
-Police said the shooters fled in a black SUV-style vehicle.

The standoff:
-Information led police to a neighborhood near the conference center where they encountered the suspects.
-After a car chase, police exchanged gunfire with the suspects, a man and a woman, died at the scene.
-Police are approaching the suspects' SUV cautiously and are checking for explosive devices.
-A third person was detained close to the scene of the shootout, but it is possible he is not connected to the shootings, Burguan said.

The suspects:
-One of the suspects was at the holiday event where the shooting took place, a law enforcement official told CNN. There was a dispute at the event and the man left, the official said. It's believed he returned with two other suspects, the official added.
-Burguan confirmed there was a dispute at an event at Inland Regional Center. Someone left the event after the dispute, he said, but it was unclear whether that person was later involved in the shooting. "There was some type of dispute or something when somebody left that party. But we have no idea if those were the people who came back," Burguan said.
-The dead suspects had assault-style rifles and handguns, Burguan told reporters. They were dressed in what he called assault-style clothing.
In mass killings, multiple shooters extremely rare

The center:
-The shootings were in the conference center at the Inland Regional Center, the center's executive director, Lavinia Johnson, told CNN. She believes the county's Department of Public Health was having a holiday party there.
-The center's Facebook page says it employs nearly 670 people at its facilities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, providing service to more than 30,200 people.
-It aims to "work on a personal, one-on-one basis with people with developmental disabilities to make their lives better as they define it." No information is yet available on how many people were at the facility at the time of the shooting.

Authorities are searching for one to three suspects near a San Bernardino, California, center for people with developmental disabilities, where at least 14 people were killed Wednesday, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters. Fourteen other people were wounded in the shooting, he said.

The shooters "came prepared," Burguan said. "They were armed with long guns, not handguns." Police didn't exchange gunfire with the shooters, he added.

The shootings were in the conference center at the Inland Regional Center, the center's executive director, Lavinia Johnson, told CNN. She believes the county's Department of Public Health was having a holiday party there.
