Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center hope they have begun paving a new pathway in the fight against drug dependence. Their hypothesis - that increasing the normally occurring process of making nerve cells might prevent addiction - is based on a rodent study demonstrating that blocking new growth of specific brain nerve cells increases vulnerability for cocaine addiction and relapse.

When I was little I was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. I was born with it. As I've gotten older it's gotten worse. It gets worse each day. My muscles get very weak, but it doesn't affect my brain. It only affects my arms and my legs, and my heart.

Researchers have studied more than 900 men and women aged between 60 and 75 with type-2 diabetes, which tends to be common after the age of 40.
