Today's Op/Ed:
Is Jon Stewart Today's Edward R. Murrow?
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 03:55 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - Chronicling Jon Stewart's role in drawing national attention to the stalled bill granting health care for 9/11 first responders, the New York Times' Bill Carter and Brian Stelter suggest that the Daily Show host could be "the modern-day equivalent of Edward R. Murrow." They say Stewart single-handedly "turned the momentum around" on the once-doomed legislation much in the same way that "Edward R. Murrow turned public opinion against the excesses of Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s." Are they right? Here's what media-watchers are saying about the comparison and what it reveals about today's media. Full Story

Mon, 27 Dec 2010 10:56 am PST
The Christian Science Monitor - Talk about timing. A Russian court waited until this week – after the US Senate had ratified an arms-control treaty with Moscow – before handing down yet another conviction on that country’s best-known political prisoner, Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Happy Hour Vid: Chris Matthews Admits Birthers Are Probably Never Going Away
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 03:37 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - On Monday's edition of Hardball with Chris Matthews, the MSNBC host addressed himself to Hawaii governor Neil Abercrombie's one-man crusade to prove that Barack Obama was, in fact, born in the United States. In 2008, the Obama campaign released a "certification of live birth," but Abercrombie hopes to bring about the release of the president's original long-form birth certificate, a document that is not considered a public record under Hawaii law. Matthews, along with Clarance Page of the Chicago Tribune and David Corn of Mother Jones, wonders why no one has done this before. Full Story

CNBC's John Carney was feeling a nostalgic desire to read the old fashioned way. .bbpBox19434224821993470 {background:url(http://a3.twimg.com/profile_background_images/181649805/NetNet_Twitter_Background.jpg) #000000;padding:20px;} p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px;margin:0;min-height:48px;color:#000;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px;padding-top:12px;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #fff;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px} p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0 0px;width:38px;height:38px} p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block} Old media watch: "It was not a bad day 2 stay @ home with the newspaper & watch the storm thru panes etched with frost." http://j.mp/ikgpaFless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhoneJohn Carneycarney Full Story

Russian Oligarch and Putin Opponent Found Guilty of Embezzlement
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 02:27 pm PST
The Atlantic Wire - Khodorkovsky's Lawyer: 'We Will Appeal' Yuri Schmidt, Mikhail Khodorkovsky's lead defense attorney, takes to The New York Times after the Judge Viktor Danilkin found his client guilty and promptly dismissed all journalists from the courtroom. Schmidt assures supporters that Khodorkovsky will appeal the court decision and expresses hope that President Medvedev may stand up for the businessman's release. He argues:An end to Mr. Khodorkovsky’s persecution would send a strong signal that change is coming to Russia and that there is hope that the country will develop a legal system worthy of the name. This would be good news for Russian citizens and for foreign investors who hesitate to put their money into an economy where property rights are not secure. It would also be welcomed by other national governments, which have hesitated to trust a country that does not abide by a regime of law. Full Story

Quote of the Day: Why You Are Not Reading Charles Dickens Right Now
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 10:53 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - "It never ceases to amaze me how embedded Charles Dickens is in our culture during the holiday season, when Christmas holds the national imagination ransom. ... Oprah Winfrey, that literary kingmaker, recently selected 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'Great Expectations' as her two book-club picks ... But I wonder how much real attention Dickens's books will get. In America at least, he seems to be an author more known than read. (Find me someone who claims to have read 'Martin Chuzzlewit' and I will show you a goddamned liar.) Yet even if you've read only one of his books, his stamp is such that it feels like you've read them all. The virtues that kept him famous, prosperous and never out of print--that he is easily grasped and eternally inventive in his visuals and jokes--have served to make him iconic. His characters, of course, deserve most of the credit. ... Taken as a whole, those 989 characters make up an unforgettable universe of humanity matched only by Shakespeare, whom Dickens worshipped. ... "Out of plain curiosity and with some trepidation, I sallied forth to the Dickens Christmas Fair ... to see for myself how Chuck D was being represented at his own holiday shindig. What I found was not so much a celebration of the man's literary genius as a Renaissance Festival in frock coats, flat caps, bonnets and parasols. The steampunkers were in attendance, with their goggles and leather trench-coats. With the exception of a single wand shop, the Harry Potter contingent was blessedly absent. However, after imbibing some specially made Copper Ale by Lagunitas Brewery and taking a picture of a ghoulish Jacob Marley (and me), I buried my disappointment at the lack of book stalls and assorted Dickensalia and ended up having a good time. It's hard to remain disgruntled for too long in an alternate reality replete with fine ale, great expectations notwithstanding. ... One day perhaps his mass popularity will translate into mass curiosity and finally into mass appreciation."- Daniel Arizona at More Intelligent Life Full Story

Protesters and Police Clash in Tunisia Following Self-Immolation
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 08:01 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - Week-long protests in Tunisia over the government's poor handling of the economy are escalating after security forces fired into a crowd of protesters, killing at least one. The protest movement began in the city of Sidi Bouzid, where a young man named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in protest after police confiscated the fruits and vegetables he sold from a street stall. Bouzazi reportedly climbed a high-voltage electricity tower and shouted "no for misery, no for unemployment," before touching the wire. Another man, Nagi Felhi, later followed his example. Full Story

Why Crisis and Violence Persist in Cote d'Ivoire
Mon, 27 Dec 2010 07:27 am PST
The Atlantic Wire - Over three weeks into the Cote d'Ivoire political crisis, with president Laurent Gbagdo refusing to leave office despite losing the recent election, low-level violence continues and several efforts at international intervention have failed. The internationally-recognized election winner, Alassane Ouattara, has struggled to push his way into office. Though Ouattara has the backing of the African Union and the United Nations, as well as the majority of the Cote d'Ivoire voters, Gbagdo has the loyalty of much of the military, making him very difficult to remove from power peacefully. The latest on the situation in Cote d'Ivoire, and why it's not getting better: Full Story
