A statement said the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader was admitted shortly before midnight. It gave no further details other than to say he was receiving the "best possible expert medical treatment and comfort". Mandela was admitted briefly to hospital earlier this month for a check up. However, he spent nearly three weeks in hospital in December with a lung infection and after surgery to remove gallstones. ...

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) said on Thursday the new treatment was not a cost-effective use of National Health Service resources. The decision follows a similar rebuff for Pfizer's lung cancer drug Xalkori on Wednesday. In both cases, the NICE recommendations are preliminary and subject to further consultation. (Reuters) - Five people, including four children, died when a fire swept through a mobile home in small town in western Illinois, local officials said on Wednesday. The Mercer County Sheriff's office said authorities were called early Wednesday to the fire at the mobile home in Sherrard, Illinois, about 10 miles south of Moline. They recovered the bodies of one adult and four children. Another adult and two children had escaped from the fire unharmed. Vitamin D might help some Parkinson's patients

Seaman NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Depending on their genes, some Parkinson's patients may be able to slow their deterioration by taking vitamin D supplements, according to a small study from Japan. Researchers randomly assigned 114 people with Parkinson's disease to take either vitamin D or a placebo every day for a year and found the neurologic condition didn't progress as much in those who took the supplements, compared to those who took placebos.
