Boston celebrates as World Series joy hits home Thursday, Oct 31, 2013 12:01 AM PDT By Julian Linden BOSTON (Reuters) - Even with the finish line in sight, Boston took one last deep breath on Wednesday night. The Red Sox were just one out from clinching the World Series with a seemingly insurmountable 6-1 lead but a history of heartbreak had taught Bostonians that nothing can be taken for granted in baseball. The unmistakable thud of the ball pounding into the glove was all it took for 95 years of anguish to disappear and trigger one of the wildest parties seen in New England "I knew this was going to be a special year," said Boston slugger David Ortiz, the outstanding player of a best-of-seven series won 4-2 by the Red Sox. "When we started rolling, nobody ever stopped the train." The St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter was the last man standing between the Red Sox and the championship but when he swung and missed at a fastball from Boston closing pitcher Koji Uehara that catcher Davis Ross caught, it was over. Adriaanse replaces injured Du Plessis in S.Africa squad Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013 11:55 PM PDT Uncapped Lourens Adriaanse has been called up by South Africa to replace injured tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis for next month's games in Wales, Scotland and France. Rugby-New Zealand the ultimate test for ambitious Japan Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013 11:54 PM PDT By Peter Rutherford Oct 31 (Reuters) - New Zealand have made no secret of the fact they will use Saturday's match against Japan as a tune-up for more rigorous encounters in Europe but for the 'Brave Blossoms' the game is the ultimate litmus test of their rugby development. The All Blacks inflicted defeats of 145-17 and 83-7 in their previous two tests against Japan and few would be surprised if the world champions chalk up another massive win at a sold-out Prince Chichibunomiya Stadium in Tokyo. Japan's shock victory over a second-string Wales side in June, however, has raised expectations at home that they are on their way to becoming a top-10 rugby power as the nation looks forward to hosting the 2019 World Cup. New Zealand coach Steve Hansen has named Dan Carter and Richie McCaw in his starting line-up but the bulk of his first-choice team have been directed straight to Paris to prepare for a meeting with France on Nov. 9. Boston bond and beards drive Red Sox to triumph Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013 11:53 PM PDT By Larry Fine BOSTON (Reuters) - Red Sox manager John Farrell said a special connection struck between his players and the city of Boston helped them achieve their ultimate goal of a World Series title on Wednesday. A team carefully patched together and dedicated to bouncing back from a last-place finish in 2012 bonded in an emotional partnership with a city on the mend after April's deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon. "In a time of need, in response to a tragedy, I go back to our players understanding their place in this city," Farrell said after Wednesday's 6-1 victory at Fenway Park clinched a 4-2 World Series triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. They get that there's, I think, a civil responsibility that we have wearing this uniform, particularly here in Boston." Farrell said the spirit began to grow when players reached out to individuals who had suffered in the tragedy and made hospital visits to bring cheer and comfort to the hundreds of wounded. FIFA allows Egypt to host World Cup playoff in Cairo Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013 11:48 PM PDT (Reuters) - Egypt, trailing 6-1 from the first leg, have been cleared by FIFA to host the World Cup playoff return match against Ghana in Cairo despite safety concerns. The Ghana FA had urged soccer's ruling body to find "a safe and secure venue" on neutral territory for the November 19 game following recent violence in the Egyptian capital. However, FIFA on Wednesday confirmed Cairo as the venue after a visit by inspectors and a demand that Egypt provide security guarantees, it said in a letter to both countries released by the Ghana FA. The winners of the playoff will qualify for next year's World Cup in Brazil. Full Story | Top |

Insight: Putin targets Dagestan insurgents as Olympics loom Wednesday, Oct 30, 2013 11:22 PM PDT By Alissa de Carbonnel MOSCOW (Reuters) - Ahead of the Sochi Olympics in February, Russia is taking saliva samples from religiously conservative Muslim women, according to locals in the North Caucasus, gathering DNA so authorities can identify the body parts if any become suicide bombers. The move coincides with a drive by President Vladimir Putin to crack down on an Islamist insurgency in Dagestan, a province in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains east of the Winter Games sites in Sochi. Under Putin, authorities seem to have given up trying to deal with the conflict through dialogue with adherents of the strict Salafist strand of Islam that is the militants' religion. On October 21, a suicide bombing that killed six people in Volgograd, a major city north of Sochi, was blamed on a woman from Dagestan. Full Story | Top |
