Households, trade keep U.S. economy humming in fourth quarter
Thursday, Jan 30, 2014 09:40 AM PST
File photo of shoppers riding the escalator at Macy's Herald Square in New YorkBy Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Strong household spending and robust exports kept the U.S. economy on solid ground in the fourth quarter, but stagnant wages could chip away some of the momentum in early 2014. Gross domestic product grew at a 3.2 percent annual rate in the final three months of last year, the Commerce Department said on Thursday, in line with economists' expectations. While that was a slowdown from the third-quarter's brisk 4.1 percent pace, it was a far stronger performance than had been anticipated earlier in the quarter and welcome news in light of some drag from October's partial government shutdown. For today, the sun is out and shining," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ in New York.

Scientists hail breakthrough in embryonic-like stem cells
Thursday, Jan 30, 2014 10:29 AM PST
Handout photo shows Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency (STAP) cellsBy Kate Kelland, Health and Science Correspondent LONDON (Reuters) - In experiments that could open a new era in stem cell biology, scientists have found a simple way to reprogram mature animal cells back into an embryonic-like state that allows them to generate many types of tissue. Chris Mason, chair of regenerative medicine bioprocessing at University College London, who was not involved in the work, said its approach in mice was "the most simple, lowest-cost and quickest method" to generate so-called pluripotent cells - able to develop into many different cell types - from mature cells. The researchers took skin and blood cells, let them multiply, then subjected them to stress "almost to the point of death", they explained, by exposing them to various events including trauma, low oxygen levels and acidic environments. Within days, the scientists found that the cells had not only survived but had also recovered by naturally reverting into a state similar to that of an embryonic stem cell.

Whale of a Tale: Rare Marine Fossil Found at School

Whale of a Tale: Rare Marine Fossil Found at SchoolA whale fossil that's been sitting on the grounds of a Southern California school for perhaps 80 years may be a previously unknown species. However, museum paleontologist Howell Thomas believes the skull belongs to a new species of extinct sperm whale. "It's a pretty remarkably complete skull," said Martin Byhower, a 7th-grade science teacher who first noticed the skull and alerted Thomas. Chadwick School is a private K-12 school in Palos Verdes, not far from Long Beach, Calif. Almost 80 years ago, when the campus was constructed, builders left boulders of hard sedimentary rock, known locally as Palos Verdes stone, sitting around, sometimes incorporating them into the school buildings.

US will likely extradite Knox if Italy asks
Thursday, Jan 30, 2014 04:05 PM PST
The United States will have little legal argument for turning down an extradition request should Italy seek the return of Amanda Knox for the 2007 murder of her British housemate. In the latest dramatic twist in the high-profile case, a court in Florence on Thursday sentenced Knox to 28 years and six months in prison for killing Meredith Kercher in the university town of Perugia. Her lawyers now plan to appeal this latest conviction in turn to the Italian Supreme Court, but if they fail Knox could find herself flying back to a country where she has already spent four years in jail. "As popular as she is here and as pretty as she is here -- because that's what this is all about, if she was not an attractive woman we wouldn't have the group love-in -- she will be extradited if it's upheld," said Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz.
