Sloppy Zenit made to pay by four-goal Dortmund
Tuesday, Feb 25, 2014 11:36 PM PST
(Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund's Robert Lewandowski scored twice in a clinical 4-2 win at Zenit St Petersburg who were made to pay for some dreadful defending in their Champions League last 16, first-leg tie on Tuesday. Zenit offered free tea and pies to the visiting fans at the Petrovsky stadium and their players were equally generous as they repeatedly gifted possession to their Bundesliga opponents. Dortmund grabbed two goals in the first five minutes through Marco Reus and Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Zenit, looking rusty as they started their first match after a two-month winter break, twice lost possession on the halfway line. Although the hosts fought back with second-half goals from Oleg Shatov and a Hulk penalty, Lewandowski replied on each occasion, helped by some more mishaps in the Zenit rearguard, as he took his tally in this year's competition to six.

By Graham Wood ATHENS (Reuters) - Manchester United's dwindling hopes of lifting a trophy this season are dangling by a thread after they produced an abject display to lose 2-0 at Olympiakos Piraeus in a Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday. We didn't deserve to get anything," manager David Moyes told reporters. The players are hurting." Defeat at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium represented yet another body blow in an inauspicious campaign for last season's English Premier League title winners.

South Africa dismiss ball-tampering allegations
Tuesday, Feb 25, 2014 11:32 PM PST
(Reuters) - South Africa have dismissed ball-tampering allegations surrounding their second test victory over Australia after opposing opener David Warner said the Proteas worked on the ball at Port Elizabeth to generate reverse swing. Chasing a 448-run victory target, Australia cruised to 126 for no loss before being undone by a devastating Dale Steyn spell to be skittled out for 216 on Sunday as South Africa levelled the three-match series at 1-1. "We were actually questioning whether or not (wicketkeeper) AB de Villiers would get the ball in his hand and, with his glove, wipe the rough side every ball," the left-hander told Sky Sports Radio. "That's another thing we have to try to bring up with the umpires." Proteas manager Mohammed Moosagee dismissed Warner's complaint as "sour grapes" and said few took the outspoken Australian's words seriously.

Bigger court, four-point shot just talk: league
Tuesday, Feb 25, 2014 07:57 PM PST
New Jersey Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe questions a call against the Charlotte Bobcats during an NBA basketball game in Charlotte(Reuters) - The NBA moved quickly to play down an ESPN report that the league was exploring the possibility of introducing a four-point shot and increasing the dimensions of the court to accommodate the increased athleticism of players. "No one at the NBA, nor the competition committee, has had any serious conversations about increasing the size of the floor or adding a four-point line," league spokesman Tim Frank said in a statement on Tuesday. In an interview with ESPN.com during the All-Star break, NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn and vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe acknowledged that the league office had informally weighed the possibility of making such changes. They spoke of the concepts mostly from a hypothetical standpoint but conceded that both ideas have been presented for discussion at a league level, ESPN said.

Adidas pulls raunchy World Cup T-shirts at Brazil's request
Tuesday, Feb 25, 2014 04:27 PM PST
Adidas agreed on Tuesday to stop selling two raunchy T-shirts months ahead of the World Cup in Brazil after the government complained that they associated the country with sexual tourism. One shirt shows a bikini-clad woman with open arms on a sunny Rio de Janeiro beach under the word-play "Looking to Score." The other has an "I love Brazil" heart resembling the upside-down buttocks of a woman wearing a thong bikini bottom. Adidas, the world's second-largest sportswear maker, said the shirts would not be sold anymore, adding in a statement that they were from a limited edition that was only on sale in the United States. The shirt designs touched a nerve in Brazil, where people often complain about foreign stereotypes of Brazilian sensuality.
