A Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship, the M/V Maersk Tigris, issued a distress call today after it was seized by Iranian military forces in the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Farragut was ordered to head toward the incident after the distress call from the Tigris was received, according to a U.S. official. The Navy has also sent aircraft to monitor the incident, the official said.
The official said an Iranian boat fired a shot across the bow of the Tigris to get it to stop, and shipping company officials have told the U.S. military that Iranian troops have boarded the Tigris.
