President Barack Obama called for a nationwide "soul-searching" and condemned the outbreak of violence in Baltimore that followed the funeral for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who died after being arrested more than two weeks ago.
Those responsible for the violence "need to be treated as criminals," he said, adding that they "distracted from the fact that you had seen multiple days of peaceful protests that were focused on entirely legitimate concerns."
As Obama spoke at the White House, police and crowds were gathering again on the streets of Baltimore.
