Breaking News

President Barack Obama today awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration, to Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator Edward Byers, a Navy SEAL.

"Ed is defined by a deep sense of humility. He doesn't seek the spotlight, in fact he shuns it. He's the consummate quiet professional," Obama said at a White House ceremony.

Byers earned the medal for his role in rescuing an American doctor held by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, a 2012 operation in which he displayed "superior gallantry (and) extraordinary heroism at grave personal risk," according to an unclassified summary obtained by CNN.

Sen. Jeff Sessions endorses Donald Trump

Sen. Jeff Sessions on Sunday became the first sitting senator to endorse Donald Trump, declaring his support for the Republican front-runner during a rally at a football stadium here.

The endorsement from the Alabama Republican known for his opposition to illegal immigration will solidify Trump's attempts to position himself as the Republican presidential candidate with the toughest stance on the issue.

The endorsement comes two days before the crucial Super Tuesday primary when Alabama and a dozen other states, mostly in the South, vote.

"At this time in American history we need to make America great again," Sessions told the raucous crowd, echoing Trump's signature line. "I am pleased to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States."

After S.C. victory, Clinton sets sights on Trump

Hillary Clinton lost no time transitioning into a general-election message, positioning herself as the opposite of Donald Trump in an optimistic speech threaded with themes of "love and kindness.”

“Despite what you hear, we don’t need to make America great again. America has never stopped being great,” Clinton told supporters after her big primary victory in South Carolina on Saturday night.

“But we do need to make America whole again," she said to loud applause. "Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers.”

“We have so much to look forward to," Clinton said. "There is no doubt in my mind that America’s best years are ahead of us. We have to believe that, we have to work for that.”

She’s come a long way from her campaign message of "Pick me because I have experience."

Clinton mentioned the five mothers by name that she recognized at CNN’s Democratic town hall on Tuesday -- five African-American women who have lost their children to gun violence or at the hands of police.

“They have not been broken or embittered. Instead, they have channeled their sorrow into strategy, and their mourning into a movement. And they are reminding us of something deep and powerful in the American spirit,” Clinton said.

“When we stand together, there is no barrier too big to break," she said. "Tomorrow, this campaign goes national.”

Clinton wins South Carolina

Hillary Clinton will win the South Carolina Democratic primary, CNN projects, proving the strength of her diverse Southern firewall and restoring her position as the undisputed front-runner in her party’s race for the White House heading into Super Tuesday.

The victory is Clinton’s strongest yet in the 2016 primary contests. She narrowly won the Iowa caucuses and was trounced by Bernie Sanders in the New Hampshire primary. Clinton won the Nevada caucuses decisively by five percentage points.

Clinton’s win Saturday night was fueled by strong support from minority voters, giving her campaign a strong jolt heading into Super Tuesday, when 11 states hold Democratic primaries or caucuses. She hopes to use those results to run up the delegate count against Sanders.

CNNPolitics Update

Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are attacking Donald Trump on foreign policy at tonight's CNN debate, criticizing his stance on Israel.

Even as Trump called himself "totally pro-Israel," he said he didn't believe there was any reason for labeling Israel and the Palestinians as the "good guy" and the "bad guy."

"The position you've taken is an anti-Israel position," Rubio said.

When Trump said he was simply a "negotiator," Rubio shot back: "The Palestinians are not a real estate deal, Donald."

CNNPolitics Alert

Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are taking aim at Donald Trump as the senators seek to become the alternative to the real-estate mogul in the final debate before Super Tuesday.

The opening moments of CNN's GOP debate in Houston were dominated by a feisty clash over immigration. Rubio, who in previous debates was reticent to directly go after Trump, accused Trump of hiring undocumented workers.

“You're the only person on this stage that's ever been fined for hiring people to work on your project illegally," Rubio said.

Trump argued that he is the only one on stage with hiring experience. "I've hired tens of thousands of people over my lifetime," he said.

Breaking News

President Barack Obama today repeated his call for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and delivered to Congress a plan to do so.

The blueprint comes seven years after Obama made an Oval Office vow to permanently shutter the prison for enemy combatants, but it faces objections from Republicans, who have already put in place legal obstacles to transferring Guantanamo detainees to U.S. prisons.

Obama said emptying the prison would move the country past what he described as a troubled era of wartime behavior.

"The plan we're putting forward today isn't just about closing the facility at Guantanamo. It's not just about dealing with the current group of detainees, which is a complex piece of business because of the manner in which they were originally apprehended and what happened. This is about closing a chapter in our history," he said during remarks at the White House.

Breaking News

Donald Trump refused to repeat his claim that George W. Bush lied to take America into the war in Iraq and he didn’t dispute a newly uncovered audio interview that suggests he was not opposed to the war in Iraq before the invasion.

"By the time the war started I was against it.  And shortly thereafter I was really against it,” he said at CNN’s GOP town hall.

Trump has confounded many political observers with his propensity for colorful, unfiltered and inflammatory language as a candidate. When moderator Anderson Cooper asked whether he would take on a different tone as president, Trump suggested he could easily switch back and forth between being politically correct.

"I can be more politically correct than anybody you've ever interviewed," Trump said.

He added: "I can do whatever I want. ...I deal with society. Society loves me."

Breaking News

Jeb Bush outlined detailed plans for the economy and foreign policy during CNN’s GOP town hall Thursday night. He admitted to being a wonk, but said he’s best prepared for the job of president.

Answering a question about legalizing marijuana, Bush took issue with the term "recreational drug." He briefly mentioned his daughter's struggles with addiction, and said he believes the government should "focus a little bit more on treatment and a little less on punishment" of individuals convicted on drug-related charges.

He also spoke in personal terms about his adoration for his father, the former president, talked about his religious conversion, spoke briefly in Spanish and said having a wife from a different culture has made his life better.

Tonight: CNN's GOP town hall at 8 ET

Donald Trump, Jeb Bush and John Kasich are making their case to voters at CNN's second South Carolina town hall tonight.

Trump is likely to address comments from Pope Francis that jolted the 2016 race. The Pope said the GOP front-runner is "not Christian" if he wants to deport undocumented immigrants and build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Bush, who is a practicing Catholic, didn't seize on the Pope's comments. "I think the Pope said he might not be Christian," Bush told CNN's Dana Bash. "I think his Christianity is between (him) and his creator. I don't think we need to discuss that."

The first CNN town hall Wednesday night featured the other three GOP candidates: Ben Carson, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.

Pope Francis said today that GOP front-runner Donald Trump "is not Christian" if he calls for the deportation of undocumented immigrants and pledges to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel," the Pope said.

He added he would not advise people on whether to vote for Trump.

During the wide-ranging press conference, Francis weighed in on the Zika crisis.

He said that contraceptives may be used in the case of mothers who may be trying to not to get pregnant because of the Zika virus.

"Avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil," the Pope said. He urged doctors to find vaccines against the Zika virus.

The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to a birth defect called microcephaly.

Ted Cruz said during CNN's South Carolina town hall that he "laughed out loud" when he learned of the cease-and-desist letter Donald Trump's campaign sent his team for running an ad highlighting his opponent's former position on abortion rights.

Cruz, Trump's closest rival in the state, defended the ad in question, saying it largely uses Trump's "own words" to demonstrate the businessman's past stance in favor of abortion rights.

"It is quite literally the most ridiculous theory I've ever heard, that telling the voters what Donald Trump's actual record is deceitful and lying," he told moderator Anderson Cooper.

Cruz addressed a question from the audience about another allegation that Trump has thrown his way: that Cruz may not be eligible to be President of the U.S. because there is a question over whether he's a "natural-born citizen," as required by the Constitution.

"I've never breathed a breath of air on this planet when I was not a U.S. citizen," said Cruz, who was born in Canada.

Marco Rubio and Ben Carson took the stage before Cruz during the prime-time event that offered each of the candidates an opportunity to make a personal case to the voters of this Southern state just three days before voting begins.

Unlike in the debates, the White House contenders are each on stage separately and field questions from audience members as well as Cooper.

Marco Rubio slammed President Barack Obama's plan to visit Cuba and defended calling Ted Cruz a liar at CNN's GOP town hall in South Carolina.

The Florida senator said that if he were president, he would not visit the island nation -- unless it were a "free Cuba."

The Cuban government is "an anti-American communist dictatorship," said the Cuban-American senator, who has been an outspoken critic of Obama's Cuba policy. "They're a repressive regime."

Rubio also doubled down on his recent accusation that Cruz is "lying," saying there is simply "no other word" for his rival's behavior.

Rubio insisted, however, that his escalating feud with Cruz was "not the core of my campaign."

Cruz, a Texas senator, will appear separately at the town hall later in the evening, but he has previously rejected the accusation of lies leveled by Rubio and other opponents.

Ben Carson said at CNN's South Carolina town hall that if he were the president in his last year of office, he would nominate someone to replace late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

"I probably would take the opportunity to nominate someone. Doesn't necessarily mean that person will be acted on or confirmed," Carson said. "Why not do it?"

The retired neurosurgeon is opening a forum that will also feature two other Republican candidates, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.

Carson also weighed in on the ongoing discussions over whether the cell phone of one of the gunmen in the San Bernardino mass shooting should be unlocked.

"Apple and probably a lot of other people don't probably necessarily trust the government these days," Carson said, pushing for a "public-private partnership."

Likely Democratic caucusgoers in Nevada are split almost evenly between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders ahead of Saturday's Democratic caucuses, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll. Though Clinton holds an edge over Sanders on handling a range of top issues, the results suggest the extremely close race hinges on divided opinions on the economy.

Overall, 48% of likely caucus attendees say they support Clinton, 47% Sanders. Both candidates carry their demographic strong points from prior states into Nevada, with Clinton holding an edge among women, and Sanders topping the former secretary of state among voters under age 55.

The Republican side seems set for less suspense when that party holds caucuses on Tuesday. The poll finds Donald Trump holding a wide lead, topping the field with the support of 45% of those likely to caucus. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz are closely matched in the race for second place, with Rubio at 19% and Cruz at 17%. Ben Carson (7%), John Kasich (5%) and Jeb Bush (1%) lag well behind those three.

China has deployed surface-to-air missiles on an island in the Paracel chain in the South China Sea, the Taiwanese government says.

A statement released by the Taiwanese Defense Ministry says that it has first-hand intelligence that confirms the existence of missile batteries in the region, which is hotly disputed by China and its neighbors.

Beijing fired back at the claims, with a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman telling reporters at a regularly-scheduled briefing that China's developments in the South China Sea were peaceful.

U.S. President Barack Obama earlier called for the halt of the militarization of the South China Sea.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are in commanding positions in South Carolina, a new CNN/ORC poll finds.

Trump holds a 16-point lead among those likely to vote in the state's Republican primary on Saturday. His 38% easily outpaces Ted Cruz, who has 22%. But the survey suggests Trump's support may have softened following last week's combative GOP debate.

Clinton, meanwhile, leads Bernie Sanders 56% to 38%. The former secretary of state is handily leading among black voters, a key voting bloc in the state, and among women. The Democratic primary will be held February 27, a week after the GOP contest.

The six GOP candidates will take part in back-to-back CNN Republican town hall events on Wednesday and Thursday nights in South Carolina. Follow the town halls and complete coverage of the presidential campaign on CNN TV, CNN.com and CNN Mobile.

The three big prizes at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards went three different ways Monday night, with Taylor Swift's "1989" album winning the biggest of them all: album of the year.

"As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success," she said in her acceptance speech. "But if you focus on the work, someday when you get when you're going, you'll know it is you and the people who love you who put you there."

Record of the year went to "Uptown Funk," Mark Ronson's song that featured Bruno Mars on vocals.

Ed Sheeran won song of the year for "Thinking Out Loud."

Kendrick Lamar, who led all artists with 11 nominations -- one short of the record set by Michael Jackson in 1984 -- came up empty in the big categories, but did win best rap album for "To Pimp a Butterfly" among his honors.

CNN Breaking News

The GOP presidential debate that began with a moment of silence in memory of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia quickly got loud and raucous, with fireworks between the candidates and between candidates and the crowd.

The six Republican candidates held their final debate before the South Carolina primary, and the late justice - a conservative champion - dominated the early part of the event.

GOP front-runner Donald Trump, who called Scalia's death a "tremendous blow to conservatism," said he was certain President Barack Obama would make a nomination, whether Republicans like it or not. He called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to slam the brakes.

Jeb Bush and Trump got nasty over the Iraq War and the Bush family legacy. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio got personal over immigration. John Kasich and Bush went at it over Medicaid expansion. And the crowd was a constant agitator - booing and cheering like crazy for their chosen candidates.

Earlier, Bush and Trump clashed over the question of how to deal with Syria.

Bush accused Trump of promising to "accommodate Russia."

"When Trump hit back, saying, "Jeb is so wrong," the audience again responded to the businessman with boos.

Erin Burnett anchors CNN's analysis and breakdown of the debate on CNN TV.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump called on Senate Republicans to block any effort by President Barack Obama to nominate a successor to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Trump, who called Scalia's death a "tremendous blow to conservatism," called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to slam on the brakes.

"It's called delay, delay, delay," Trump said at the final Republican debate before the South Carolina primary.

Earlier Saturday, Obama said he would act "in due time" to replace Scalia, whose sudden death was announced Saturday.

"There will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the Senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote," Obama said.

Officer Peter Liang, who shot and killed an unarmed man in 2014 in a New York housing project stairwell, has been found guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct.

Liang faced trial in Brooklyn on five counts in the 2014 death of Akai Gurley, 28: manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment, criminally negligent homicide and official misconduct.

Gurley was shot in the chest in Brooklyn and died at a hospital. The next day, police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters the 28-year-old fell victim to "a very unfortunate tragedy ... involving an accidental discharge."

The prosecutor accused the rookie officer of recklessly shooting into a dark stairwell "for no reason."

The U.S. Justice Department is filing a lawsuit against the city of Ferguson, Missouri, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday. The lawsuit alleges a pattern and practice of unconstitutional police conduct in the city.

Last March, the Justice Department determined the Ferguson Police Department had demonstrated a pattern of discrimination against African-Americans, targeting them disproportionately for traffic stops, use of force and jail sentences.

The national spotlight fell on Ferguson after the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson in August 2014. Brown, who was unarmed, was black, and Wilson is white.

CNN Breaking News

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders cruised to comfortable victories in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary Tuesday.

Their victories had been predicted, but the second-place finish on the GOP side by Ohio Gov. John Kasich introduces a new potential challenger as some Republicans look for an alternative to Trump.

Trump appeared on stage with family and supporters. "Wow, wow, wow," he said. "We are going to make America great again."

Kasich credited his strong showing to his pledge to run a positive campaign. "Maybe, just maybe, we're turning the page on a dark part of American politics, because tonight the light overcame the darkness of negative campaigning."

The Iowa GOP winner, Ted Cruz, was in third place with 74% of the vote counted and Jeb Bush was in fourth place. Cruz, who spent little time or money in New Hampshire, will be happy with the result if it holds and fourth could give some new life to Bush's campaign.

Marco Rubio, who finished strong in Iowa, blamed his weaker showing in New Hampshire on his latest debate performance. "Our disappointment tonight is not on you. It's on me. It's on me. I did not -- I did not -- do well on Saturday night, so, listen to this: That will never happen again. That will never happen again."

On the Democratic side, Sanders thanked his supporters with a passionate speech. "Tonight we have sent a message that will echo from Wall Street to Washington from Maine to California," he said.

In her concession speech, Democratic rival Hillary Clinton said she, too, wanted to rein in Wall Street. "But I know how to do it," Clinton said, implying that Sanders' calls for a revolution were unrealistic.

Candidates' attention now turns to South Carolina and Nevada, which hold primaries later this month.
