Op-Ed Contributor: Health care reform is an economic necessity Tue, 2 Jun 2009 09:57 am PDT The Yahoo! Newsroom - Washington, DC – Health care reform is more than a social imperative – it is an economic necessity. A new study by the President's Council of Economic Advisers demonstrates that the current American health care system is on an unsustainable path. Without health care reform, American workers and families will continue to experience eroding health care benefits and stagnating wages caused by the pressure of escalating health insurance premiums. And without reform, rising spending on Medicare and Medicaid will lead to massive and unsustainable Federal budget deficits. I remember my mother's reaction when I announced my decision to study music instead of medicine: "You're wasting your SAT scores!" My parents love music, but at the time they were unclear about its value. Full Story | Top | America's Safest Cities Thu, 4 Jun 2009 10:00 pm PDT RealClearPolitics.com - When we think about cities in the United States, one thing almost always comes to mind: crime. What's more, we often associate our largest cities with being the most crime-riddled. But in fact, new data released by the FBI demonstrates many of our largest cities are quite safe when measured across a variety of categories. Full Story | Top | Obama's Message Management Fri, 5 Jun 2009 10:00 pm PDT RealClearPolitics.com - President Obama's speech in Cairo Thursday was not just carried live by American television networks, but broadcast around the world in more than 30 different languages. A significant speech, yes, but just the latest in a series of "major speeches" Obama has given in the first five months of his presidency. And it came one day after the conclusion of a major network prime-time series looking behind the scenes of the Obama White House. Full Story | Top | QUESTIONS OF FAIRNESS RESONATE IN DEATH PENALTY CASES Sat, 6 Jun 2009 04:57 pm PDT Cynthia Tucker - You can understand why Iraqis were outraged by the decision of a federal jury last month to spare the life of a U.S. soldier who was the ringleader of a group that gang-raped a 14-year-old Iraqi girl in her home and then murdered her parents and 6-year-old sister to cover up the crime. You need not be a fan of the death penalty -- and I'm not -- to question the sentence. If there is to be a death penalty, doesn't such a crime demand it? Full Story | Top | ROOSEVELT AND THE JEWS Sat, 6 Jun 2009 04:57 pm PDT David Shribman - Seventy years ago there raged in Washington one of the most portentous, and least known, debates in Western history. World War II had not yet begun. The full extent of Hitler's maniacal plan to wipe Europe free of Jews was not yet known. The United States hadn't taken even the first steps toward the informal alliance against Nazi Germany that the Lend-Lease Act symbolized. Full Story | Top | WHAT TO DO WITH ENEMY PRISONERS? Full Story | Top | Judge Sotomayor and the Diversity Crowd Fri, 5 Jun 2009 12:00 am PDT Linda Chavez - The diversity crowd doesn't really believe in diversity. In fact, what they're really aiming for is conformity of opinion. They expect that members of racial and ethnic groups will adhere to liberal orthodoxy, and woe to those who don't fall into line. If Judge Sotomayor were a conservative or the nominee of a Republican president, we'd be hearing that she wasn't an "authentic" Latina at all. Full Story | Top | The U.S. Department of Injustice Fri, 5 Jun 2009 12:00 am PDT Michelle Malkin - The U.S. Department of Justice seal bears a Latin phrase: "Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur." The motto refers to the attorney general, "who prosecutes on behalf of Lady Justice." But under President Barack Obama's politically corrupt DOJ, Lady Justice is getting the shaft. Full Story | Top | Obama in Cairo: Diplomacy of Wishful Thinking Fri, 5 Jun 2009 12:00 am PDT Mona Charen - In Cairo, President Obama told (was it for the 100th time?) the story of his African father and American mother. This story has worked well for him in the American context, and he seems to believe that it will beguile the rest of the world as well. We shall see whether this experiment with autobiography as foreign policy has purchase.
