Steven Weber: At the End of the Day (A Poem of Creeping Pessimism) Top
And at the end of the day, and at the end of the day, and after all is shrieked and done, I get the feeling that we the people have no idea what really goes on up there in that district of colombia; that we the people really have no part in what goes on; that Obama, so right, so real, so smart, so able, must have been told something that only the few are told, that only the few will ever know and that most of us dare not think about. Why else would things be the way they are? Why the obstruction when Obama has the momentum, the votes, the voice, the ear of the people? Ahh, there must be something afoot, friends. It all adds up when you just look at the what, where, how and why of it all. The heroes and villains may just be pieces in a parlor game and the public, once again the poor gullible public, needs its truth to be more like its fiction and proceeds apace, believing the hype and sipping of that sweet, heady nectar. And the bloated bastards discharge their divisive cant, telling us we'll die if we do what we know is right, telling us our heart's desires are sick, telling us our common sense is Satan. And too many of us believe these doom prophets, too many of us bleed for our fictional heroes, too many of us thoughtlessly despise our fictional villains. When the truth is as tragically simple as we might think when we're alone with our thoughts and refrain momentarily from our all-consuming consuming and we look at the sneering and hear the jeering and smell the foul air and know that the truth is and always has been a mere hair's breadth away from enlightening us, lightening us, then it becomes clear that our sense and our senses have been purposefully deadened by those enemies to truth, who have transcended normal expectation and now dwell on levels of awareness most will never reach. Power is the ultimate level; to reach it is to reach God, to understand what God really is; to reach it is to become corrupt in the soul and regard the human experience as a perpetual experiment that fails, forever. And at the end of the day, friends, we have allowed that to happen.

Judge Whose Mother And Husband Were Shot And Killed By Litigant Declined To Buy "Expensive" Home Security System Top
CHICAGO — A federal judge whose mother and husband were shot and killed by a disgruntled litigant said Saturday that she looked into buying a home security system but that it seemed too expensive and "we just didn't do it." "I've gone over in my mind so many times what could have been done differently," U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow said during an American Bar Association panel in Chicago on how judges can keep themselves and their families safe. Lefkow came home the evening of Feb. 28, 2005, to find her husband, Michael Lefkow, 64, and her mother, Donna Humphrey, 89, shot to death in the basement. Bart Ross, an electrician whose medical malpractice suit had been dismissed by Lefkow, killed himself two weeks later and left a note confessing to the crime. DNA evidence and spent shells confirmed Ross was the killer. Lefkow said she was surprised to hear from an expert from the U.S. Marshals Service that a home security system could cost as little as $100. She said she and her husband had looked into buying a system but understood it would cost several thousand dollars. "We just didn't do it," she said. She said judges must make up their minds that "for the sake of my family, for the sake of myself, I just have to do it." Lefkow said she now lives in a high-rise building with 24-hour security. Before Ross' suicide, the most publicized focus of the investigation into the killings was white supremacist leader Matthew Hale. He is now serving a 40-year sentence for soliciting Lefkow's murder after she ruled against him in a trademark dispute. More recently, a New Jersey blogger was charged with threatening to assault or murder Lefkow and two other Chicago-based federal judges who refused to overturn handgun bans. According to a federal complaint, Harold "Hal" Turner's blog entry referenced the Lefkow slayings. "Apparently, the 7th U.S. Circuit court didn't get the hint after those killings. It appears another lesson is needed," Turner wrote, according to prosecutors.

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup Top
This week, the House unanimously approved a resolution recognizing that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. You'd hope that would signal an end to the birther virus infecting the GOP -- but just a day later Roy Blunt, the former Minority Whip and current Senate candidate, called Obama's place of birth "a legitimate question." It's time for these folks to put up or shut up. Show me a Kenyan birth certificate, Lou Dobbs, or zip it. Also this week, the NFL reinstated dog-killing quarterback Michael Vick, leaving sports fans to ponder which team might sign him. Probably best to avoid those with an animal mascot. The Saints wouldn't be a good fit either. He should stick with a team like the Giants or Steelers or Vikings. Why go looking for trouble?

Andy Ostroy: Conservative Radio's Andrew Wilkow Makes Sean Hannity Sound like Rosie O'Donnell Top
He barks and snaps like a rabid pitbull, spewing his venomous hate-speak towards everyone from gays and blacks to immigrants and liberals. His shrill, vitriolic diatribes suggest a serious anger-management problem. Thankfully relegated to the low-ratings, low-significance Sirius Satellite Radio, he is nonetheless, with the exception of the moronic blabbermouth Mike Church, the most narrow-minded, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, sexist buffoon on the airwaves. This is a guy who, on the day Sen. Chris Dodd announced his prostate cancer, said of the Connecticut Democrat: "I'm starting to think the prostate cancer is from spending a little too much time with Barney Frank." What are you, 15 , Wilkow? So you're implying that Dodd and Frank have gay sex, and that's why Dodd's been stricken with prostate cancer? Not only is this an utterly ignorant thing to say, it's a colossal insult to the gay Massachusetts Congressman, and towards Dodd it's cruel, crude, insensitive and highly juvenile, especially for someone who spends half his airtime criticizing "snarky" liberals. Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. Regarding another top liberal suffering from a typically deadly illness, Sen. Ted Kennedy, who's inflicted with brain cancer, Wilkow's been railing for weeks now about how much money is being "wasted" in an attempt to save the Massachusetts liberal: "Why throw more money down that rat hole." How about showing a little compassion, Andrew? Wilkow often talks about his dad who's suffering from cancer himself, and having lost a father to cancer, I sympathize and sincerely wish them both the best. Yet when it comes to liberals suffering from this dreaded disease, Wilkow appears to have ice running through his veins and is devoid of heart. Last Friday, in another classic asinine Wilkow diatribe, he wondered how easy it would be to take on Democrats even while inebriated: "Maybe I should drink and see if I can debate liberals. Just dumb myself down." Well, you can't get any lower on the dumb scale, Wilkow. And, as I have done twice with you when guesting on your program, debating you--drunk, sober or even comatose--is like taking candy from a baby.

Sailor charged with murder commits suicide Top
SAN DIEGO — A sailor charged with murder who committed suicide in the brig at Camp Pendleton asphyxiated himself by stuffing toilet paper in his mouth, according to a U.S. Navy spokesman. Petty Officer Jonathan Campos was found unresponsive in his cell about 12:20 p.m. Friday, said Navy spokesman Doug Sayers. He was rushed to the base hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. "He was intent on committing suicide and stuffed toilet paper into his mouth until he asphyxiated," Sayers said. Campos, 32, of Lancaster, Calif., was charged July 23 in connection to the fatal shooting of Seaman August Provost of Houston. On June 30, Provost, 29, was shot several times while on duty in a sentry station at Camp Pendleton. Provost's remains were set on fire in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence, Navy officials said. Campos was charged July 23 with 16 criminal offenses, including murder, unlawful handling of a dead body, stealing military property and soliciting a civilian to kill a fellow sailor. He had been in Navy custody since July 1 and faced an investigative hearing in military court, similar to a grand jury, in the coming weeks. Provost's family believed his shooting may have been a hate crime. The family said Provost, who was gay, complained of being harassed about his sexuality in the days before his death. Navy officials rejected those claims and said there is no record of Provost filing a harassment report. Officials said Campos, a gas system technician, had been cooperating with investigators. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service continued to investigate the shooting death, according to Sayers. An autopsy has been ordered for Campos. Campos and Provost were both assigned to Assault Craft Unit 5, but officials said there was no indication they had a close association. Ten days before the Provost shooting, Campos was arrested in Imperial Beach and charged with driving under the influence. Campos also faced charges for illicit drug use as well as breaking into another service member's home where $5,400 worth of electronics, jewelry and a .45 caliber pistol was stolen, military officials said. Campos enlisted in the Navy in December 2001. Provost entered the Navy in March 2008 and reported to Camp Pendleton last September.
