TweetMeme Improves Ranking Engine, Comments With 2.0 Release Top
TweetMeme , the quickly-growing site that lists the most popular links on Twitter, is launching an overhauled version today that the startup is calling TweetMeme V2. The company says that today’s release includes “a total rewrite” of its scoring system, which will likely affect how quickly and what type of stories appear on the site. Given that the site isn’t live yet we can’t test the new engine, but TweetMeme says that the new ranking engine will provide “more varied and better quality content”, which will be helped in part by a new kudos scoring system that can change the weight of individual Twitter users. The site is also introducing an improved filtering engine, a new comment system (you’ll now be able to take a comment on the site and retweet it), and a flagging system that lets users bury bad entries. A more robust analytics package will also be appearing next week. Another interesting note: TweetMeme is teaming with JS-Kit to add support for its real-time commenting engine Echo , which will now be able to import TweetMeme contents into blogs. TweetMeme will also begin promoting Echo, presumably in the hopes of having its reach widened as its comments appear in more blogs. Snow Leopard Protects You From Two Trojans Top
It seems that Snow Leopard contains some sort of anti-malware system. But what does it really protect you from? Not much . It seems to scan for only OSX.RSPlug and OSX.Iservice and then only scans files from Safari, Mail, and a few web browsers. Usenet and Bittorrent clients are unaffected. It doesn't even actively scan the Downloads folder. TechCrunch50 Conference 2009 : September 14-15, 2009, San Francisco

Vidly: Twitvid.io Changes Names, Direction, And Gets Funding Top
When Twitvid.io launched back in May, it was amid a mad rush of startups trying to become the “TwitPic of Video” for Twitter. This included another startup, Twitvid.com , which caused a lot of confusion among users. It also apparently brought out the cease and desist orders from Leo Laporte , who has the rights to the TWiT (This Week in Tech) name. Needless to say, the timing was right for a name change for Twitvid.io, and so they’ve done that. They’re now Vidly . But the change is about more than just removing user confusion and clearing up legal issues, it also represents a shift away from a sole focus on Twitter. Vidly’s new goal is to be the most convient way for people to share video on the web, no matter what service they use. And they’re going to start that by launching an iPhone app that will allow users to easily upload videos they take to a range of services including yes, Twitter and Facebook. And Vidly (which can also be spelled Vid.ly, as they own that domain as well as the dot com) already has a big time supporter: California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yes, when he’s not busy doing Q&A sessions at Twitter HQ , the Governator is using Vidly to spread his agenda. Here’s Schwarzenegger’s page on the site. While the first step is an iPhone app (alongside the website), Vidly co-founder Chrys Bader also says that BlackBerry and Android products are in the pipeline. “ Basically, we want to be anywhere where there is a video audience. And not necessarily just in the U.S. either, ” Bader tells us. Along those lines, the company has taken a $500,000 angel round of funding from the likes of Ron Conway and other individual investors. The money is being used to staff up, since the company currently only has 2 employees. Before Vidly was Twitvid.io, it was known as Fliggo , a Y Combinator startup. As Vidly, the startup still faces plenty of competition, though many are solely focused on Twitter video sharing right now. Security Snafu: Elance Sends Private Messages All Over The Place Top
Second time this Summer we write about Elance , a service that allows for companies and individuals to hire and pay independent professionals and contractors online, and once again it’s not good news but another security issue . A registered user of the service, Salma Jafri , tells us she has been receiving dozens of private messages that were erroneously sent to her account, on occasion even containing confidential information and sensitive data such as login details for Elance accounts and third-party servers. The company has been alerted to the problem by members since the security breach became apparent a couple of hours ago, but Elance has apparently not dealt with it yet nor responded to any inquiries, says Jafri and numerous others in the website forums . We’ve contacted the Mountain View company as well but haven’t heard back so far. Something’s seriously wrong though. Members are complaining in the forums (screenshots below) that they’ve received over 50 e-mails so far that were not meant for them. Several of them reportedly contain sensitive data from clients, like login details and private information about their accounts and activities. Elance members reading this: you might want to verify what you’ve sent your clients the last few days and change any login credentials you’ve passed on. Who knows who else has been reading along. (Thanks for alerting us, Salma ) Elance’s CMO Brad Porteus, has issued a statement confirming and apologizing for the breach in security: Here is what we know so far about the Daily Summary emails that many have reported receiving earlier today. Once a day, Elance sends an email (to those who elect to receive them) that summarizes the previous 5 messages posted in the digital Workrooms that facilitate collaboration between service providers and their clients. Such communications are typically messages that occur either in real-time between parties or are left in a bulletin board format. Yesterday, one of our engineers made a change to the script that initiates this nightly process. The changes were tested, but the errors were not identified. As a result, last night's batch of such Daily Summary emails were initiated at 1:30am Pacific time, and unfortunately an unknown number were erroneously sent to parties that were neither the provider nor the client. The error was discovered at 2:30am and the process was halted by 2:50am. The sending of daily digest emails has been stopped until such time that we can be assured that this error has been fixed. This mistake happened due to human error on our side. It is inexcusable and we are sorry for it. Our immediate priorities are to focus on understanding the impact these messages have had (how many were sent and to whom), and then to proactively communicate as appropriate to all parties who have been affected. This will take some time, so please be patient while we figure everything out.
