Glenn Beck is the White Malcolm X Mon, 30 Aug 2010 05:45 am PDT The Daily Beast - Glenn Beck's weekend speech was reminiscent of the radical 1960s black separatist leader: Both terrify mainstream liberals and shed politics for a message of spiritual uplift. Full Story | Top | Charlie Crist's Caucus Dilemma Mon, 30 Aug 2010 08:56 am PDT The Atlantic Wire - As Democratic midterm prospects worsen and Florida Governor Charlie Crist hovers within striking distance of Republican nominee Marco Rubio, an interesting question has arisen in the state's Senate race: Would Crist, who dropped out of the GOP primary months ago to run against Rubio as an independent, caucus with Democrats if elected? Crist, for his part, isn't saying. "I caucus with the people of Florida," he told CNN's Ed Henry last week. "This is a moot question unless I win." True enough, but it hasn't stopped others from speculating about what a Democratic Crist could mean to the composition of the United States Senate. Fri, 27 Aug 2010 09:12 am PDT The Atlantic Wire - Facebook lawyers are attempting to secure a degree of trademark authority over the word "face" as part of a company name. It may sound outlandish, but the social networking site has already had some success with the word "book." Facebook has successfully blocked other companies from building sites with similar-sounding names that end in "book," such as "Placebook." Now it wants similar ownership over "face" and is currently pursuing a trademark claim. But, as is so often the case with Facebook, the situation manages to get even stranger and more dramatic from here. Full Story | Top | Can South Africa keep tapping World Cup spirit? Thu, 26 Aug 2010 12:39 pm PDT The Christian Science Monitor - In 2007, the US State Department asked me to go to South Africa to meet with leading newspaper editors. With the 2010 World Cup looming, they wanted to hear the experience of an editor who had managed coverage of a major sports event, as I had in Salt Lake City with the 2002 Winter Olympics. With a new Gallup poll giving Republicans a "whopping" 10-point lead on the generic ballot, the question pundits are asking now is: how did Democrats become so unpopular? Full Story | Top | Newt's Faint Presidential Prospects Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:00 pm PDT RealClearPolitics.com - On Friday, at a town hall in small town Oklahoma, conservative Sen. Tom Coburn said Newt Gingrich is "the last person I'd vote for, for president." Gingrich is "a super-smart man but he doesn't know anything about commitment to marriage." Gingrich lacks, in Coburn's view, "the character traits necessary to be a great president." In March, however, the mood changed. North Korea snk a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, killing 46 sailors. It was the largest military attack by the North since the end of the Korean War. Transformational politics requires us to challenge the way people think about issues, opening their minds to better possibilities." Americans seem to have a gut response that it "just isn't right." As for American Muslims, too many of them seem ever more bewildered at the power of the feelings against it. Politically outnumbered, I ended up playing defense most of the night. Full Story | Top | The Politics of Obama's Iraq Speech Tue, 31 Aug 2010 10:48 am PDT The Atlantic Wire - President Barack Obama will give a 15-minute televised address tonight to mark the formal conclusion of U.S. combat operations in Iraq. Though 50,000 troops will remain in a de facto combat role, the U.S. will take a less prominent role in Iraqi security and reconstruction following the 2003 invasion, which Obama famously opposed as a senator. As with everything in Washington, the event is as much about politics as anything else. Here are the politics of Obama's address and his Iraq policy--and the political response of the Republicans hoping to unseat as many Democrats as possible in November. Today may be your day. Early this morning, Greenpeace activists broke a standoff with the Danish navy in Baffin Bay, zipping through a security line on inflatable boats to scale an oil rig. Having deposited an occupying force of four, the boats rushed back to the mother ship, Danish navy in hot pursuit. The four men left behind have now, so Greenpeace says, stopped the drilling and have set up "occupation platforms" which, going by photos, resemble cots dangling over the ocean. But, as McCain told George Stephanopoulos today on Good Morning America, that doesn't mean she's not a Palin fan. She is. Except when Palin snubs her mom. On that issue, they part ways. It's a performance Stephanopoulos deems "savvy and saucy." Tue, 31 Aug 2010 08:28 am PDT The Atlantic Wire - The latest sign of Wall Street's antipathy to President Obama is a letter penned by hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb. Formerly one of the president's biggest supporters, Loeb sent a letter to investors Friday criticizing the president's handling of the economy, which, according to Loeb, has led to "unpredictable government regulation." Loeb joins a string of other Wall Street influentials (some of whom supported Obama's 2008 presidential bid) who resent the president's leadership. Why have they soured on Obama?
