Today's Op/Ed:
Palin Visits Iowa: Clever Marketing or 2012 Prelude?
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 06:02 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - Like it or not, the will-she-or-won't-she whispers about whether Sarah Palin will throw her hat in the ring for a 2012 presidential bid won't end until she states verbatim, "I'm not running." Until then, even the slightest suspicions of her political ambitions will set off speculation. One of the larger such hints is her recent decision to be the keynote speaker at the Iowa Republican Party's Ronald Reagan Dinner. Not only because Iowa plays a unique role in kick-starting the presidential primaries, but because--according to recent polls--Palin clearly needs to bolster her image and credibility in order to have a shot at becoming the Republican nominee. Here's what pundits are saying about her latest turn in Iowa: Full Story

Can Obama Deliver Israel-Palestine Peace?
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 04:09 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - Direct Israel-Palestine peace talks begin today, hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas both join Obama to commence what will be the ninth round of U.S.-led Israel-Palestine peace talks over 31 years. Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak will also be present. The process begins inauspiciously, with Palestinian group Hamas claiming the murders of four Israeli civilians, one of whom was pregnant, and Israeli settlers continuing the construction of West Bank settlements despite a U.S.-backed settlement freeze. Here's what observers have to say about Obama's approach at one of the longest running and most stubborn problems in U.S. foreign policy. Full Story

Who to Believe in the WikiLeaks Rape Case?
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 01:53 pm PDT
The Atlantic Wire - A Swedish prosecutor's decision reopen the rape case against Julian Assange gives new life to the ongoing debates about WikiLeaks. Assange, the site's founder, has not only denied ever having had "nonconsensual sex" with the two women who have accused him, but has also insinuated that the American government could be behind the accusations, driving a Pentagon smear campaign designed to neutralize Assange and his troublesome organization. Newt's Faint Presidential Prospects
Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:00 pm PDT
RealClearPolitics.com - On Friday, at a town hall in small town Oklahoma, conservative Sen. Tom Coburn said Newt Gingrich is "the last person I'd vote for, for president." Gingrich is "a super-smart man but he doesn't know anything about commitment to marriage." Gingrich lacks, in Coburn's view, "the character traits necessary to be a great president." Full Story

Confessions of a conservative who voted for Obama
Tue, 31 Aug 2010 11:32 am PDT
The Christian Science Monitor - A few months ago, I sat with some friends in a pizza place in Chapel Hill, N.C., engaged in my own version of a “beer summit.” A successful Connecticut entrepreneur, a Wall Street executive, and a retired senior bank officer pummeled me with questions about my support of President Obama. Politically outnumbered, I ended up playing defense most of the night. Full Story

The Nation - The Nation -- "Transformational politics is the work we do today to ensure that the deal we can get on gun control or immigration reform in a year—or five years, or twenty years—will be better than the deal we can get today. Transformational politics requires us to challenge the way people think about issues, opening their minds to better possibilities." Full Story

The Upshot - An Arizona man is in trouble with his homeowners' association over flying the Gadsden flag, which features a coiled rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread on Me." Predictions as Hurricane Earl Nears East Coast
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 10:17 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - As Hurricane Earl nears the U.S. east coast, many observers are wondering what this storm, which comes five years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf coast, will do, and whether we are ready. Earl's impact was widely feared to be highly destructive, but the hurricane's downgrade from category four to category three has assuaged much of the concern. A forecast by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), reproduced below, predicts the storm may sweep past much of the east-coast population centers, although they say North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland remain at risk. Here are the predictions for what could happen next. Full Story

Bloggers Rush to Politicize Ongoing DC Hostage Crisis
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 09:58 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - A gunman named James Jay Lee has taken a small number of hostages at the headquarters of the Discovery Channel in the DC suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland. Lee, who police say may have explosives, has long protested the Discovery Channel building and has posted a crazed, rambling Internet "manifesto", calling the human species the "most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around" and insisting that the Discovery Channel air his views. Though Lee is clearly sick, and though the hostage crisis is still ongoing as of this writing, bloggers and partisan commentators have not hesitated in using this incident to score political points. Whether liberal or conservative, the bloggers argue that Lee represents the opposite end of the political spectrum and is thus the responsibility of that bloggers' ideological opponents. Full Story

Apple Stuns With Ping, 'a Social Network for Music'
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 09:09 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - As usual there was a flurry of rumors surrounding Apple's surprise product launch today in San Francisco. The event was live streamed across the web for Mac users only (though there was a work around for PC users). Expectations ranged from updates to the iPod, iTunes and even Apple TV.While Apple CEO Steve Jobs did indeed dazzle his audience with revamped versions of all three products, the big surprise came with his introduction of Ping, a social network built directly into iTunes. As Jobs explained today:We're announcing Ping -- it's a social network for music. It's like Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes. It's all about music. Built right into iTunes is Ping -- you see all your recent activity. Here's a post from an artist -- Lady Gaga. You can find people just by typing in their name. If they've said 'you can follow me' you can follow them with just a click... Ping is for social music discovery. You can follow people and you can be followed. Most artists will hold their hand up and say 'you can follow me' -- you can hold your hand up and say that as well, or you can say 'people can follow me but I have to approve who follows me.' Then you can set up a circle of friends. Full Story

White House Might Want to Give You a Tax Cut
Wed, 1 Sep 2010 09:06 am PDT
The Atlantic Wire - A Wall Street Journal story says the Obama administration is considering tax cuts and other stimulus measures, sending the blogosphere into a flurry of activity. A later White House statement (see "Update") suggesting such reports were "premature" has done little to calm the waters. Early buzz is mostly centering on the possibility of a payroll tax cut. There are two considerations: politics and economics. Would the tax cuts the administration might be considering make sense in this climate? Here's the debate. Full Story
