Couple arrested after Utah and Nevada crime spree

photoLAS VEGAS (Reuters) - A couple wanted for a crime spree through Utah and Nevada that saw an elderly pair slain in their home and a woman shot in the head was arrested on Tuesday wandering in the desert, authorities said. Suspects Logan McFarland, 24, and Angela Marie Hill, 25, were spotted by the pilot of a sheriff's plane in a remote area of Elko County in northern Nevada, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Jim Phelps told Reuters. The duo were walking in the desert after they evaded highway patrol officers on Saturday in a car chase and later crashed their stolen Volkswagen Jetta, he said. ...

photoLOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The mother of a man accused in a string of arson fires across Los Angeles has been arrested at the request of German authorities in an unrelated case, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday. Dorothee Burkhart was in custody on a provisional arrest warrant sought by German authorities and faces a detention hearing in federal court later in the day, U.S. Attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek said. "Germany has not officially requested the extradition," Mrozek added, saying that a provisional warrant was typically the first step in an extradition. ...

It hasn't executed anyone since 2006, when a federal court ruled that its method of lethal injection was improper and could cause excessive pain. The state spent five years coming up with a better method -- and last month, a judge threw that one out, too. The Atlantic Wire - The LAPD arrested a man they suspect helped set fire to at least 55 cars in the Los Angeles area in the past three days, and since then no new arsons have  been reported, the police say. So they're confident they've got their man. The crazy arson spree has caused at least $2 million in damage to cars and surrounding property. Reuters - SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Three men were arrested and a fourth is being sought by the FBI in what investigators said was a scheme to market stem cells as miracle cures to desperate people suffering from terminal diseases. The arrests began in the past 10 days after two indictments were issued in November charging the four with 39 counts of mail fraud and unlawfully manufacturing, distributing and selling stem cells and stem cell procedures not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The FBI said the men received more than $1.5 million from patients suffering from incurable diseases. ... Full Story
