China's Alibaba tests social shopping with Pinterest clone

Reuters - SHANGHAI (Reuters) - It is a marriage made in heaven for shopping addicts. Social shopping, the merger of social networking and e-commerce which has hooked millions of users in the United States, has now captured the attention of China's Internet giant. Alibaba Group's social shopping platform Fa Xian (http://faxian.etao.com), launched on a testing basis four weeks ago, is already luring 60,000 viewers a day. Micron settles memory chip lawsuit with Oracle

The main entrance to Micron corporate headquarters in Boise, Idaho(Reuters) - Semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology Inc said late on Thursday it has reached a deal with software giant Oracle to settle a lawsuit filed by Oracle over price increases for memory chips. The lawsuit accused Micron Technology of hatching a "conspiracy" to increase DRAM chip prices for the period from August 1, 1998, through at least June 15, 2002, and included a claim for damages. Micron said Oracle had agreed to a settlement and would release the company from all claims arising out of the litigation. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. ...

More U.S. clean tech IPOs come to market, amid skepticism

Reuters - (Reuters) - Two U.S. clean tech companies plan to go public on Friday, as executives and bankers increasingly bet that high energy prices and more proven technology will make investors forget the sector's recent flameouts. Solar inverter company Enphase Energy priced shares at the low end of its range on Thursday night, while selling more shares than expected. Reuters - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A big improvement in labor conditions at plants that produce Apple's iPhones, iPads and iPods in China, which was announced on Thursday, is unlikely to create much more than a ripple in prices across the West. While the reduced overtime hours, increased hiring and improved safety will raise labor costs for the gigantic contract manufacturer Foxconn that Apple uses in China, they are such a small part of the overall cost of the smart phones, tablets and music players that the shift can be largely absorbed, economists said. ... Apple's Foxconn workers want to work more, dislike food

Reuters - SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The Chinese workers who assemble Apple Inc's iPads and iPhones are young, mostly male and a large number of them do not live in their employer Foxconn Technology Group's much-maligned dormitories. Maybe it's the food. The survey of more than 35,000 Foxconn workers revealed that 71 percent of them don't think the factory canteens serve good food, according to the results of an extensive survey of three of Foxconn's China factories undertaken by Washington, D.C.-based non-profit group Fair Labor Association. ... BlackBerry maker trims senior staff: report

Reuters - TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion began a fresh round of senior staff layoffs on Thursday, a Canadian newspaper reported citing a source close to the company. RIM's shares were halted in after-market trade pending news just minutes before the smartphone company is expected to report its fourth quarter results.
