Strasburg loses grip as Rockies top Nationals

Reuters - (Reuters) - The Colorado Rockies handed Washington ace Stephen Strasburg his first defeat in more than a month with a 4-2 victory over the visiting Nationals on Monday. Strasburg (9-2) had won his last six starts, but the Rockies got to him in the sixth inning, where the hard-throwing pitcher lost control and hit Marco Scutaro on the head. Scutaro left the game, walking under his own power, and Strasburg departed not long after with his first loss since May 15. The 34-year-old Byrd began the season with the Chicago Cubs, who traded him to Boston in April but he was released by the Red Sox on June 12. Byrd will now be put on baseball's restricted list for the duration of his suspension. He blames the failed test on a past medication he took for an undisclosed surgery. ...

Sandusky, 68, was convicted last Friday on 45 counts of child sex abuse charges in a case that rocked U.S. college football and raised awareness of child molestation. Sandusky has been confined to jail since then to await sentencing, while his attorneys vow to appeal the verdict. ...

Isinbayeva delays start of outdoor season

Reuters - (Reuters) - Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva has delayed the start of her outdoor season by pulling out of a meeting in Reims, France, on July 4. In a statement on Monday, Isinbayeva said she and her coach Yevgeniy Trofimov had decided the Russian needed more time to work on her technique. "My training has been going well but I still need a bit more time to make sure I am ready for this summer and, ultimately, the London Olympic Games," she said.
