Real ease past Espanyol into King's Cup semis
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 11:43 PM PST
(Blank Headline Received)By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid set up a King's Cup semi-final against holders Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao when they beat Espanyol 1-0 in their quarter-final, second leg on Tuesday for a 2-0 aggregate success. Real were quickly into their stride on a chilly night in the Spanish capital and their Spain playmaker Xabi Alonso unlocked the Espanyol defence with a magisterial seventh-minute pass. Forward Jese sped clear before clipping a clinical effort into the net past goalkeeper Kiko Casilla from a tight angle. Casilla made several fine saves to deny Cristiano Ronaldo but any faint hope Espanyol had of getting back into the tie disappeared when midfielder Victor Sanchez earned a second yellow card and was sent off 13 minutes from time.

Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 11:41 PM PST
Australia continued to make changes to the team's off-field structure by announcing the departure of assistant coach Steve Rixon from its backroom staff, the country's cricket board said on Wednesday. "I've taken the opportunity to look at our current coaching structure and the levels of support I feel we need moving into the future," head coach Darren Lehmann said in a statement. "This will see various coaches and experts in their field working with the team as and when it is needed." Former wicketkeeper Rixon, 59, played 13 tests for Australia. The team recently announced that former spin great Shane Warne will work with Australia's slow bowlers ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh in March.

Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 11:35 PM PST
By Alan Baldwin JEREZ, Spain (Reuters) - Sebastien Vettel kept Michael Schumacher in his thoughts on Tuesday as Formula One returned to the track after a long winter break with the German great still in a coma one month after a skiing accident. Schumacher, a seven times world champion and winner of a record 91 races, suffered brain injuries when he fell and hit his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel on December 29. "I have known him for a long time and have been looking up to him all my life... he became a friend," said Vettel, who paired up with Schumacher in the annual Race of Champions event as Team Germany. "He is still in a coma and we still don't know in what shape he will be when he wakes up, which is horrible for his family and close friends." Vettel said he had not visited the former Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes driver in hospital in Grenoble so as not to add to unwanted media attention.

Soccer-Rodgers refuses to get carried away by derby mauling
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 11:25 PM PST
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a first ever victory over Everton with a thumping 4-0 triumph in the Merseyside derby on Tuesday but the former Swansea boss maintained the pursuit of a top-four finish meant more to him than regional superiority. Goals from skipper Steven Gerrard and striker Luis Suarez around a Daniel Sturridge brace secured victory over a subdued Everton to strengthen Liverpool's hold on fourth place but Rodgers did not lose sight of the team's long-term goal. I'm more delighted for the players and supporters," Rodgers told the club's official website (liverpoolfc.com). I'll probably over-analyse the performance and see the areas we can improve on going forward." Tuesday's victory at Anfield was pretty close to what Rodgers has long expected of his team despite a poor penalty miss from Sturridge that would have made the score 5-0.

Seattle Seahawks-themed marijuana cupcakes are displayed at the Queen Anne Cannabis Club in SeattleBy Jonathan Kaminsky OLYMPIA, Washington (Reuters) - For Nate Johnson, the excitement surrounding the upcoming Super Bowl is two-fold. Not only are his hometown Seattle Seahawks taking on the Denver Broncos - football teams representing two major U.S. cities where recreational pot use is legal - but his medical weed dispensary is seeing green. Demand for "Beast Mode" - a strain named in honor of the Seahawks' hard-hitting running back, Marshawn Lynch - has been high at his Queen Anne Cannabis Club in Seattle, Johnson said, while pot-laced blue-and-green cupcakes are also selling fast. "Anything Seahawks colored or themed, it's 'Boom!'" Johnson said, referring to the brisk sales.

Denver's 'Pot Roast' reveals recipe for Super Bowl stardom
Tuesday, Jan 28, 2014 09:59 PM PST
Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton helps a kid to try on a jacket as part of an activity with The Knights of Columbus called "Coats for Kids" in Jersey CityBy Julian Linden NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - By any standard, Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is a giant hulk of a man. Had he been a seafood lover, he might just as easily been called a 'shrimp.' At Tuesday's media day, an annual event that kicks off of Super Bowl week, Knighton took a break from the usual dialogue about tackles and touchdowns to explain how he came about his unusual nickname. Plane is dark and the lady is walking down the isle saying, 'Pot roast, pot roast,' and I'm like 'right here, right here.' "My teammate behind me was like, 'You're saying that like that's your name. "It was either that or 'shrimp alfredo,' so I'm glad I got that." Knighton's tale elicited a hearty laugh from the large media throng that surrounded him at New Jersey's Prudential Center.
