President Barack Obama on Thursday dismissed suggestions $400 million sent to Iran amounted to a ransom paid for the release of American prisoners.
"We do not pay ransom. We didn't here, and we won't in the future," Obama said at a Pentagon news conference a day after reports emerged that the United States delivered palettes of cash to Tehran on the same day prisoners were freed.
It was one topic in a question-and-answer session that covered a wide range of issues:
- ISIS U.S. and local forces will retake Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, Obama said. He acknowledged that ISIS still has the ability to "direct and inspire" terror attacks.
- Zika Obama chided lawmakers for taking a "vacation" before approving his requests for funding to fight the virus. The "situation is getting critical,” he said.
- Intelligence briefings for candidates Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will get briefings despite Obama having questioned Trump’s fitness to be commander in chief.
- Trump’s demeanor Obama said, “Make your own judgment” about whether Trump is a person who can be trusted with the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
