Comcast, Disney ink 10-year carriage deal for TV, Web

Reuters - (Reuters) - Comcast Corp, the largest U.S. cable operator, and Walt Disney Co on Wednesday said they had reached a comprehensive 10-year programming carriage deal for TV, Web and handheld devices. The agreement covers Disney's various networks including ABC and ESPN, and will allow Comcast's Xfinity TV customers to watch those networks live or on-demand on multiple devices. The deal gives a big boost to the cable TV industry's push for programmers and distributors to reach agreements that will enable paying subscribers to watch their favorite shows anytime. ... Groupon grew while major rival shrank in November: report

photo(Reuters) - Groupon Inc's main business grew in November as the largest daily deal company extended its lead over rival LivingSocial, according to estimates released on Wednesday. Groupon's gross billings totaled $154 million in November, up 6 percent from the $145 million it collected in October, Yipit estimated. LivingSocial's gross billings declined 5 percent to $52 million in November, versus the previous month, Yipit also estimated. Gross billings are a closely watched measure of how much money Groupon and other daily deal companies collect from the offers they run with merchants. ...

photo(Reuters) - Twitter, the popular microblogging site, apologized on Tuesday for incorrectly verifying a false account for Wendi Deng, the wife of News Corp Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch. The fake account with the handle @Wendi_Deng popped up on Sunday soon after a real Twitter account was started by the media mogul on New Year's eve. News Corp communications staff confirmed that the Murdoch account was genuine. ...

Progress Q1 outlook misses street view, shares down 9

Reuters - (Reuters) - Business software maker Progress Software Corp forecast first-quarter earnings below analyst expectations, as some of its customers continue to delay investments amid macroeconomic uncertainties, sending its shares down as much as 9 percent in trading after the bell. "The company is facing execution challenges and its markets are softening, also it is trying to be conservative in its guidance," Analyst Steve Koenig of Longbow Research said. AT&T to pay TiVo to settle patent dispute

photo(Reuters) - AT&T Inc has agreed to pay TiVo Inc a minimum of $215 million and additional monthly licensing fees to settle a patent infringement dispute, sending shares in TiVo up 15 percent in afterhours trade. The settlement is the second big win in recent months for video-recording technology pioneer TiVo, which expects fees from AT&T to "significantly exceed" the guaranteed minimum payment. TiVo also prevailed in a similar case against Dish Network and Echostar Corp in May. ...

Rambus raises quarterly revenue outlook, shares jump

Reuters - (Reuters) - Rambus Inc raised its fourth-quarter revenue outlook, despite losing a major lawsuit late last year, sending its shares up 10 percent in early trading Tuesday. The technology licensing company said it expects to report fourth-quarter revenue that is well above its previously announced target. Rambus said it anticipates revenue of about $83 million, compared with its previously announced target range of $66 million to $71 million. The two analysts who follow Rambus, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, were on average expecting $69 million in revenue for the three-month period. ... Full Story

Micron jumps on report of DRAM consolidation

Reuters - (Reuters) - Shares of Micron Technology Inc jumped as much as 11 percent on a report that one its biggest competitors, Elpida Memory, may merge with Toshiba Corp, in a sign of consolidation in an industry hurt by cut-throat competition. On Tuesday, DigiTimes reported that the Japanese government was brokering talks between the troubled DRAM (dynamic random access memory chips) maker and Toshiba to merge operations. Barclays upgrade Micron, shares jump

Reuters - (Reuters) - Shares of Micron Technology Inc climbed as much as 11 percent after Barclays Capital raised the chip devices maker's stock to "overweight," even as the brokerage downgraded five other stocks from the sector, including Intel Corp. Barclays said it expects Micron to benefit from higher pricing of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and stronger PC sales, likely from the second half of the year. JP Morgan upgrades Cisco to overweight;shares rise

photo(Reuters) - Investment bank JPMorgan upgraded its recommendation for Cisco Systems to "overweight" and raised its price target for the network equipment maker on expectations of a rebound in public sector spending and improved margins in 2012. Cisco stock was up 3.4 percent to $18.65 in midday trading in New York on Tuesday. "Our proprietary analysis of 30 U.S. federal agency budgets implies that spending will increase in FY'12 after being down in FY'11 and may act as a tailwind for Cisco," JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall said in a note. ...

Reuters - TORONTO (Reuters) - An app that acts like a musical postcard enables users to capture and share musical moments with friends and family and to discover great songs along the way. Called Soundtracking, the free app lets users share song clips, along with their thoughts, location and a photo to help convey their experiences. Kodak loses third director in a week

Reuters - (Reuters) - The third director in a week has resigned from Eastman Kodak Co as the former film giant struggles to survive the dominance of digital photography. Laura Tyson, a professor and White House advisor, told Kodak on Thursday she was resigning from its board, the company said on Friday in a Securities and Exchange filing. Kodak, which was once synonymous with photography, is looking to sell patents to shore up its shrinking cash position and stay in business after failing to turn an annual profit since 1997. ... Verizon to add $2 bill-pay charge

photoSHANGHAI (Reuters) - The Chinese government is working with domestic Internet search engines like Baidu Inc and Sohu.com and financial institutions to prevent phishing attacks on unsuspecting Chinese web users. The Ministry of Public Security said on Friday it would work with 10 Chinese search engines to protect the website rankings of financial institutions to lessen the chances that Internet users will be duped by phishing websites.
