CNN Breaking News

Republican presidential candidates attacked front-runner Donald Trump at the first debate of the evening, which featured lower-polling candidates, foreshadowing what Trump can expect as he and 10 other leading Republican candidates face off.

The first round featured Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal, George Pataki and Lindsey Graham.

In a heated exchange, Pataki and Santorum butted heads about a Kentucky county clerk's refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, with Santorum defending Kim Davis.

Later, Graham chastised Jindal and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, saying he was "really sick of hearing" threats of a government shutdown.

Those are among the highlights from the debate's first round; for an instant recap and highlights from the second phase, sign up now for Nightcap, CNN's political newsletter.
